    Amazed that Alcohol is legal

I am 42 years old and smoke weed maybe 4 times a year..

But have become an Alcoholic in the last 10 years....

AL is legal, it's on every corner and it's even encouraged...

I'd rather be stoned and fall asleep than make a total dick of myself/and/or become aggressive....

I'm not encouraging smoking weed but AL is way more destructive...

Just thinking out loud..and am stoned...

    LMAO xxx

I think that weed can be addictive to SOME people...namely my son and a couple brother-in-laws... To them, its as addictive as AL... Not saying one is better than another...just to them, they are equally destructive.

Too much money being made off of alcohol for it to ever go away, but it definitely is a drug.

Amen to that! Alcohol is a legalized drug that's been glamorized and put on a pedestal by society. I know that we will never go back to the prohibition, but maybe some day society will get the same mindset toward alcohol as we have toward cigarettes now. In the 50's and 60's cigarettes were the cool and hip thing for everyone to do, and now they are pretty much shunned. When you announce to people you want to quit smoking you are so supported and are made to feel proud. When you announce that you need to quit drinking, people think there's some thing wrong with you and it's pretty embarrassing.

I can only hope for the day that alcohol isn't thought of as a wonderful relaxer and party enhancer, but as the poison it really is.

it is about the money with alcohol but then again our government UK makes a fortune of tobacco as well, so maybe not. Alcohol advertising and glamourising should to be banned and education about the dangers of what AL and what it can do to you in smaller amounts. People only seem to think alcohol is bad for drunks and is fine for everyone regardless of the fact that they drink more than government safe guidelines.

I think we are a long way off from alcohol attitudes changing and we cant compare it to smoking because it is different from smoking, the vast majority of people who smoke are addicted and seriously damaging their health and also damaging the health of those around them, the same can not be said for alcohol

For some reason your post reminded me of this movie I watched a few years ago. It was about this boy born with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. The whole two hours focused on his struggles and difficulties. Anyway, they overcome all these obstacles and the last sentence of the movie was the boy saying "I can't wait until I turn 21"...the mom says "Why", and he says "So I can drink". It kind of just left you sitting there going WTF???!!! After ALL that!!!??
We're so conditioned to think we have to drink. Stupid alcohol.

I dont really understand which post would remind you of a film, unless it was the bit where I said about needing education changing. Not drinking will not happen, heroin is illegal but people still take it, as they do with cocaine and all the other street drugs.

I dont know as people are conditioned to drink, in my family it is definately the norm but I am the only drunk, and I am the only one who has any health problems regarding drink, we see people eating ice creams and chocolate on tv all the time, it doesnt make me want to run out and overeat them and make me kill myself on them but some people do, but yes we are conditioned to eat things that arent necessary for our life or even good for us. What I am saying is most people dont have a problem with such things, most people dont have a problem with alcohol so they should just be left to enjoy it. Because I have a problem with it doesnt mean I have to inflict that problem on others. It is up to them to make informed decisions about what they want to do with their bodies and their lives.

I disagree, space, alcohol is still a toxin and a drug that has been made legal. Just because its legal doesnt mean it's not a drug and can cause a drug addiction. It's just like saying that heroin should be legal because you can get a buzz off of it and some people don't become addicted and can use it responsibly. Heroin causes less health problems than alcohol in the long run.

I used to smoke cigarettes on and off responsibly. I knew quite a few people that smoked the same way. We could take them or leave them. Does that make them any better because a part of the population can smoke without getting hooked? Both cigarettes and alcohol cause health problems. I for one would like to see alcohol drinking be more frowned upon by society in general and having fun and kicking back without alcohol be more promoted. The drinking culture is too pervasive, it's not just a few odd alcoholics here and there. I agree though..... It's never going to happen.

Agree with you 100% Peace. Alcohol and cigarettes both should be illegal, if the criteria for drugs was used fairly with ALL drugs.

Also agree with researchqueen...my bf is addicted to marijuana, but he doesn't black out or fall down, or generally do anything that could harm himself or anyone else while high, whereas, the same could never be said for AL.

                      Alcohol often does damage the health and lives of other innocent people besides the person drinking it though;

Many many crimes and acts of violence are committed under the influence of alcohol.
Millions of working days are lost by people failing to come into work due to hangovers or turning up for work but not working at their full potential
People are injured / killed by drunk drivers
Marriages / families are destroyed by a drinker in the household
Children can suffer physical and emotional abuse / neglect living with an alcoholic parent

I'm sorry but I disagree. People ARE conditioned to drink. I have teenagers that are faced with it a lot. It's "the" thing to do at parties. Educating these young folks about the TRUTH of alcohol is not inflicting MY problem on them. And the reason I was reminded of the film was because of the ludicrous ending, where the kid had been through so much, and STILL wanted to drink (because of society). And I don't think alochol can be compared to ice cream or chocolate. Being under the influence of sweets is hardly the same dangerous thing.

This is way off the legalization topic but I am relived to see you all disagreeing respectively and intelligently. I made the mistake of ... Well not even certain what my mistake was since I was just asking what others seemed to be asking but I wondered into another thread and got such a piss ant and f you response to a simple what's going on that...well. Really upset me. Ego and self esteem not my strong points. However after turning off the computer and thinking about grabbing a you know what, instead I hung out with one of my twins and watched The Ryan White story. very sad but completely inspirational. And I decided that some jerk wasn't going to stop me from trying to get out from underneath this. And that whoever it was is just as struggling as me so...here I am...again. Hiding in this thread now
