day one and already fighting it

wow everyone...thank you so much for all the encouraging words. It is almost bed time here and i have made it thru the day,,no wine in the house so i have no way to drink tonight or tomorrow as i am spending whole day with hubby..no way to escape to the wine store without him knowing..

mama ..yes he does not like it when i drink..he is ok with me drinking in moderation on holidays or on the rare occasion we are out for dinner with friends. He does not like daily drinking thats for sure.

next chance for me to have a glass of wine will be thursday night when i am done work. I work in a restaurant,, and we have lots of wine,. I usually have a glass when i am locking up and doing the cash. I am ashamed to say I even sometimes put some in a take out cup with straw (i know...blech) for the drive home. Typing that makes me want to cry with shame.

so. around this time on thursday night i will try to come online as soon as I get home. I will do my best. I think I will not let the other girl go home before i am done. I can tell her i dont want to lock up alone for safety reasons. Then I know i won't drink anything. I am such a closet alcoholic. No one at work has ever seen me take a drink. even when they do!

thanks again to everyone for helping me thru day ONE. NOW to make day TWO a success

Hi AJ, Im in BC. WELL DONE on making it to tonight. The more time you get clear, the easier it gets..Lots of tests ahead, but you can do it. I too was a closet closet closet hidden sneaky drinker, or so I thought. Now I find my kids and many of my friends were on to me. Who knew! Congrats on DAY 1.

and also read about it in the FAQs here:

If not, you might want to at least consider taking L-Glutamine which is great for stabilizing blood sugars and decreases alcohol cravings which is paramount in the early weeks.

Here's a link to more about L-Glut and an excerpt.

The Way Up Newsletter : Benefits of Amino Acid L-glutamine

STABILIZES BLOOD SUGAR & DECREASES ALCOHOL CRAVINGS

Glutamine does this by several mechanisms. When the blood sugar is low, Glutamine suppresses insulin to stop the further decline of the sugar levels. It also stimulates glycogen (a stored form of glucose) to be released to help increase the blood sugar to normal levels.

Further, Glutamine is a glycogenic amino acid which means it can convert to sugar for energy production, a process called gluconeogenesis. It is the most important such substance.

These blood sugar stabilizing effects may partially explain why it decreases alcohol cravings, as well as sugar cravings. In studies with alcoholics, 2000-3000 mg 3 times daily decreased the desire to drink, decreased anxiety, & improved sleep. It works best given between meals. Has been used for this purpose in daily doses from 6000-15,000 mg in 3 divided doses. Use upon arising, mid-morning & mid-afternoon between meals.

Giving Glutamine to rats decreased their voluntary alcohol consumption by 34%. When the Glutamine was stopped, their alcohol consumption returned to baseline levels.

Additionally, Glutamine supports pancreatic growth & function, increases the production of pancreatic enzymes, increases pancreatic weight, DNA, & protein content. This would also stabilize blood sugar & indirectly improve overall nutritional status.

I followed the MWO program when I first started and have been sober over 3 years. Not sure I could have done so on willpower alone.

Another thing I did that was extremely helpful was to drink tons of water with fresh lemon (not the fake stuff). It cleanses and stimulates the liver and really helps to cut cravings. Just google "benefits of lemon water" and you'll see that it's a superstar.

              Best of luck to you.

up and at it for my day two. didnt sleep worth a crap last night. One thing I thought about...how to fill the time? you know, the HOURS I spent drinking?

almost in a panic mode this morning as i know i have no wine and i cannot get to the wine store. I mean it is good that i can't as it will get me to day three, but my first thought this morning was of a glass of chilled white.

                    Hi Lexi!

I just wanted to check in with you today. Sorry you didn't sleep well, that is VERY common the first few days of going without alcohol. I use Melatonin to help me sleep, it works very well. Maybe you could try something relaxing right before bed, like tea and a long hot bath? It will get better, I promise! Your body is adjusting to falling asleep, instead of passing out.

Your question about filling in the time is the million dollar question! I think that's what most people worry about when they first quit. I kept myself very busy the first few days doing things I wouldn't normally do on a week/work night...went to the movies, spent hours at Walmart...lol. Anything to get away from my drinking "spot"...which was my couch. After the first few days I was able to stay home and re-shift my thinking. I read a lot of books and watched a lot of shows about alcohol/addiction. After about a week, it became so much easier.

Can you plan something for tonight to pass the time? Keep us posted ok??

Just home from a great day at work . Usually the first thing I do when I get home is have shot #1 ,feed my pets and have shot #2. Sign on to FB, cath up on everyone for about an hour then head back for shot #3, sit on the patio for a little while, play with the dogs for a while, then head to the shower, change into my sweats,& go back for #4. This all in a space of 1 to 2 hrs. Then the games begin ! shot # 5,6,7,8, ect,ect..untill I pass out. Yesterday and today the first thing I did was feed the pets, & sign on to MWO. I am so lucky yo have you all in my life. Oh BTW, I sleept last night , not a very restfull sleep, but sleep ,& not 8 hrs of walking B&F, talking to myself, or tossing all night. Will be back to chat later I'm off to the dog park for a few hrs.

Hi Lexi, hope your feeling better today, it is very true that each af day we have we feel better. This time last week was day one for me, and I felt nervous, anxious and full of remorse, one week on and not having had a drink, I feel so different. My sleep is also much better. I also spend a lot of time reading. I've even managed to do some gardening, it's surprising what difference a few days make.
