Hi All, I am absolutely terrified:upset:. I just found out I'm 9 weeks pregnant and I've been drinking like a fish! I was in chicago for work training (horrible excuse) and EVERY night we were drinking a TON (I'm talking like a bottle of wine plus shots!)

I went in Friday to let my OB know that my periods were lighter and I wanted to change BC and she told me I was pregnant.

I am absolutely horrified and so ashamed. Will my baby have FAS?!

Glad you decided to join us!
Did you talk to your Doc about this? Have you stopped drinking entirely?
You can't change anything that's already done but you can manage your future & that of your baby.

If you need help to stop drinking, talk to your Doc about what might be safe to use during pregnancy,
In the mean time, download the MWO book from the Health store here on the site.

Stop drinking and all will be fine. The placenta is only just taking over supplying nutrients now so you need not worry.
As Lav said if you have a problem stopping you may need help.

I would say the past 2 years I have had a drinking problem I really sat and thought about it this weekend and safely can say it has become a problem. I found out Friday and have not had anything since.

Went to the doctor today and had ultrasound. There I saw my 9 week old peanut and heard the heart beat away. It was amazing.

I told my doctor exactly what I've been doing the last 2 months and he did not seem too worried. It's just so confusing because there are so many conflicting arguments about drinking and pregnancy. I even laid out how much I drank - I'm talking A LOT! He said in all his years of practice he's only seen 1 FAS case and that was a woman who drank everyday from morning until night and just couldn't simply stop. But I'm 9 weeks and the first 2 months are so critical so I'm a WRECK! Sorry to blab!

I seriously feel so awful and my doc suggested I go to an AA meeting, which I am in a hour. It's crazy because I have a BS in psychology and did a semester long study on addiction (i didn't start drinking until about 2 years ago after college) so I know how awful the disease is. Never saw this coming....I just feel so irresponsible.

It is common for people to study things they are suffering in the hope they will never have to disclose themselves. Addiction doesn't work that way unfortunately.

Admitting to the problem, really admitting to it and then accepting quitting seems to be the only route.

You have a reason to stay sober now.....treat it as a lifesaver, quit and stay quit, for the sake of you both

Our minds go a little nuts. As serious as this is.....as long as you stop drinking now everyone will be fine.

I drank up until finding out I was pregnant....and all was ok. I actually found it as a release to actually stop drinking.

Don'tdso what I did.....pick up the drink after the baby is born. I had so much time not drinking......and it ruins me to think how I picked up beer on the way home from the hospital....to celebrate

I just wanted to let you know that you are not alone. I was drinking on a regular basis and had a "blowout" night of two bottles of wine by myself before I found out I was pregnant. I was exactly 4 weeks from my last period when the worst of the drinking occurred, and it still causes me guilt/worry.

The good news is that you've stopped drinking and are focusing on the health of your baby. :-) If you need to talk to anyone, I'm here!

You'll be fine. I found out I was preg right after the holidays. I didn't drink at all during early pregnancy (Pregnant+buzz = yuck), more from a physical standpoint. Later on, I might had a glass of wine or a beer, but it never appealed to me to have much more. Listen to your body, and everything will be OK.

Like you, I had al the knowledge in my head... It took AA to help the theory drop from my head to my heart...

I too got legless on Vodka, in Poland, the night before I found out I was pregnant with my 1st. He was 4.2kg at birth, very clever boy, now 19. I did not sober up until 10 months ago. The effect of him LIVING with my drinking is devastating. He is doing now as mommy did.

I pray that you find a way to stay sober!! Sobriety rocks, in my kid's language!

If your insurance will cover it, see if your OB will refer you to a fetal medicine specialist or a perinatal specialist. I think having more information about the development of the baby is helpful. I got a referral early on to ask questions about the drinking, etc., and I continue to see the specialist for ultrasounds now in the second trimester because he is very knowledgeable.

I'm thinking about joining AA as well, to try to avoid turning back to drinking post-pregnancy. Good for you for taking the steps to deal with this now.

It's been a while since you posted this, so I hope you've had time to come to grips with everything, and I hope that you're feeling better these days! I just wanted to say that you're definitely not alone when it comes to this. Lots of women drink before they find out about their pregnancies, and lots of women (myself included) have gone on to have perfectly healthy babies. Personally I was drinking between a quarter to a half bottle of liquor on an almost nightly basis. I was also in college and doing some other things I should not have been doing pregnant or not. Anyway, I stopped the drinking and nonsense and had a baby girl in January who is perfectly healthy and happy. She was born at over 7 pounds, 20 inches long, so there were no weight issues, and she was born beautiful and perfect. She's an intelligent and advanced little five month old now starting to crawl, and teething and making me crazy.
