stop this crazyness
I have been reading post on here for awhile and decided to join. I drink white wine daily. My husband is a big red wine drinker and together we are out of control. We had huge family fights over the weekend with our 2 teenage boys. I want it to end. I am tired of feeling terrible and having to go to work. Today will be day one! I alwasy feel that in the mornings and then when the 5:00 time gets here and I'm on my way home from work I always seem to stop.

Hi, DW
You can be done with that!! I was in that rut, too, and am so glad to be free!!
If you haven't already done it, check out all the tips in the Toolbox (link below). Something in there should work for you and your husband. Is he on board with quitting with you? I hope so! If so, get all of the wine out of the house immediately. Just dump it -- wasting the money will help you know that you are willing to do whatever it takes to get over this crippling and family-destroying addiction.
A good place to hang out is the Newbies Nest -- that link is below also. There are people at all stages of this process who are eager to help you.
:welcome: and I hope to see you over in the nest!

I was exactly the same.....promise myself every morning, cave in every evening for TEN years!
Once I got past five days sober it got SO much easier......now I regret not sticking it out as I suffered all those years out of fear it was going to be terribly hard.
Now my relationship with my kids is awesome, I feel great and life is, well, just life again. Getting off that roller coaster is such a relief.

From 3pm/5pm seems to be the witching hours for most of us. I hunkered down in bed with lots of water, aspirin and comfort food (casseroles are good) and Netflix for many days this truly got me thru the worst.
I can make dinner now and only rarely think how nice a glass of wine or seven would be while I am chopping veggies...now I have some tonic and lime there and do dinner in stages: cut up veggies... Walk away for a bit. Start the fish or the meat or whatver...in the pan it goes..walk away...salads next...call the kids to set the table while I ...you guessed it...walk away.
This has saved my butt many times.
You have found a great place. Stay close. :lOn My Own Way Out Since May 20, 2012

Hi Daily wine! I too can relate to the best of intentions at 8AM and then any excuse to pour a glass by 5PM. Been there done that a zillion trillion times! It's not easy to get free but is SO WORTH IT!! The toolbox suggested up thread is a good start. It's linked in my signature too.
Good luck!

I was in that rut too! I am now on day 29 without this horrible and destructive routine.
You can do it! Read through the various diaries on the board and check out the newbies nest and toolbox.

I was there too - and wine was my poison as well. I am at 91 days today - and I still struggle. It can be done though and you CAN do it. I never drank in the morning or before work...it was the 4 glasses after work that killed me. ESPECIALLY while cooking. That was MY time. But I am happier now than I ever have been. Not saying I don't have the thought, but I step back, breathe deep and have someting non AL to drink, and I am good. We are here for you. This place is a lifesaver!

Thank you all so very much for making me feel so welcme! Made it thru day one. Even took my 16 year old out for a nice dinner and only drank water. I really want him to see I can do this. I too liked to drink while cooking so doing it in steps as Kradle suggested should help too. It is nice coming in to work and feeling good. I am so lucky I have not lost my job as I am an office manager for a large group or Orthopedic Surgeons. I posted yesterday on Newbies nest as well. Looking forward to having day 2 over!

That is great DW - congrats. The first thing I noticed when I stopped was how clear headed I was at work, and far less stressed with not having to deal with everything with a hangover. And your son will benefit from this as well! This is beautiful newsFebruary 27th, 2013. A New , Successful Start. :h

Congratualations to you all I can relate to all of you as well.. Its that time of day from about 3-6 the witching hour that really gets to me. I have had one or 2 days, even 3 of AF over the past few weeks.. More than i can say has ever happened since my pregnancies.. My kids are 5 and 8.. I started my AF 1 again yesterday, so today will be day 2... I am taking wellabutrin and i know that helps with the cravings.. Last evening when things started getting "hairy" and my kids were fighting over who i should play with Son wanted me to play football and Daughter the swing.. I said lets do something we can all do together and drove to 7-11 for slurpees. It diffused the situation and we had fun despite my son dropping an entire med slurpee all over the floor in 7-11. which splashed all over the 3 of us .. When i told my kids over dinner, i hadnt smoked all day they were really excited and gave me a high five, when i said i hadnt had any wine either i got double high fives, they are my motivation.. each of us has something to work on. I dont know if i should be sharing with my kids, but they know that wine does something funny to me. or maybe they think its the cigarettes. I didnt make promises to them, but said i would try.. We had the BEST time reading books last night, ive never heard my son laugh so hard.. BTW, we were reading about Predators and did you know that the Black Mamba ( snake) can slither faster than you can run, it can climb trees AND swim like a fish. Its over 14 ft long... :H Thank God it lives in Africa!

Whitemarshmom - congrats on your efforts to get free of both Nic and Al. Both difficult to give up!!!!
As far as your kids go....
Since sobering up I have been going to school to become an addiction counselor. I am more than halfway through my internship now and will be taking the exam in July. I work in an inpatient treatment program. As part of my internship I've had the opportunity to meet wih family members of clients. You would be amazed at what young children have figured out. Like you said - they may not have all the details straight but they can figure out stuff like 1) Mom drinks the stuff in *those* bottles and 2) Mom starts acting strange. There are really young kids (younger than yours) who've figured that out. They may not need to know every detail of what you go through to stop, but if they know your drinking is a problem (which it sounds like they do) then I think it's good for them to know you are working on it. That's my opinion anyway...FWIW
Good luck!

Thanks again for all the support and sharing stories. I know this has bothered my son for years and he is only 16. My older 2 are out of the house already. My husband is traveling this week so it should help when I get home as he usually has a glass of wine waiting. In the past when I have stopped I drink soda water with a lime so I will get some of that on the way home versus a botle of wine. Can't wait to check in tomorrow and have day 2 over.
