I recall a lovely talk by a Buddhist man that was weighing the merits of various sins.
there was a list of sins (theft, murder, aduletry etc..)and among them was drinking alcohol.
he decided that he would choose drinking as it seems the least injurious.
after drinking he was dismayed to find it caused him to engage in all the other sins.
a parable perhaps, but I thought it a strong one.
we are simply not our true selves when intoxicated. not connected to the unity of all life.
I write this as a reminder to myself as much as anyone that reads it.
