Why do I drink myself to sleep every night

Hello, I'm new here. I have been drinking for many years. The thing is, I don't know why. They say if you can figure out why, you can heal. Well I believe I drink now because, I am alone. I lost 60 pounds and have gained thirty back. I am 52 years old and come to work hung over everyday, and I swear, my brain itches. I have high blood pressure and other stuff going on, but I still don't stop. I am so sick of myself! I feel like a total failure. I don't like AA, I can't afford therapy, so what a blessing it is to stumble upon this site. I pray that I get the support I need here. By the way. Nice to meet you all:new:

Why do I drink myself to sleep every night

Hi NeedtoHeal, Welcome! I'm pretty new here too and this is the place to be. We are all in the same boat in varying degrees of stopping AL. I'm on day 12 today and it is getting a little easier but still the cravings hit hard when they hit. I've never been a sugar eater because I've always drank. Now if I'm not craving AL, I'm craving sugar! I guess that's normal and people around here say load up on the ice cream if you have too just don't hit the bottle. Glad you are here. Check in often.

Why do I drink myself to sleep every night

        Hi, Need

I saw you posted earlier in the Newbies Nest. That is a great place to hang out because even though it is slow right now, it tends to be one of the busier threads. Weekends can be kind of slow so... maybe you could read back. The characters change but the problems (and solutions!) remain pretty much the same.

There are many women in our age group on here. Maybe we finally come to the point where we realize that this is NOT how we want to be spending what remaining days we have in this world. And believe it or not, once you kick AL out of your life, you'll be glad to be alive! I had gotten to the point of not really caring about anything. Everything seemed pointless.

It is completely in your power to stop drinking right now, even if it doesn't feel like that. Make your plan for what you're going to do and drink instead of alcohol. And then DO THAT. Come on here and read and post --- give MWO as much time each day as you lost to AL.

Have you read through the toolbox? The link is given below. You should find some ideas there that would work for your lifestyle.

All the best to you, NS

Why do I drink myself to sleep every night

            Hi Needtoheal

Whilst many people wanted to know 'why' I drank, I found trying to dig out the answers, finding the reason why didn't stop me drinking. I found stopping drinking then having a look at myself, learning to live again more successful - then there came a form of acceptance that I was meant to be this way.

I hope you find your path and your answers.

Great advise. I feel so grateful for your comments. I live a really isolated life. You don't know how much this means to me.

Why do I drink myself to sleep every night

Hello there! I'm a newbie also. didn't drink for long but was getting wasted every night and for no apparent reason. Probably boredom. children are grown, hubby at work late. When he'd come home we'd sit out on the deck chatting for approx 2 hours. I'd drink. Start feeling good and guess the saying "just because something is good doesn't mean more of it is better" is true! I don't feel I had an underlying "reason" or "issue" behind my drinking as I really am a happy person. But remember that regardless of what your life is like or any issues you have going on......getting wasted and feeling like crap every day afterwards doesn't make it any better and you know in your heart that you could really screw up the rest of your life.

Get yourself a plan of action and once you kick this stuff's butt do something about your isolated life. I've decided to go back to college for something to do. Also ordered myself some work out videos and am turning one of our game rooms into a work out room. I'm almost 50 but I'm not dead! lol

Glad your here and even if it's just some attention you need (I did a few times) then post away!

PS: I didn't realize that my "hangovers" were actually withdrawals until I tried to stop. I tapered with beer (very tricky and dangerous) but my last beer was Wednesday night (2 nights ago) and I have to say I've had a $hit eating grin on my face half the day today because i'm sooooo happy I was successful at getting of that evil stuff. Good Luck!

Hi Needtoheal. Just wanted to say welcome. I'm in the same age group and alone so maybe we can lean on each other. I know where you are at right now. Don't give up, ok. Things will get better. Yeah - the itchy brain thing...I get it. If you want to talk, I am here. You can PM me too. Take care.

Leann and MossRoss, thank you for your responses. Leann, I am just starting back with the workouts. I lost 60 pound a few years ago, and just in the last 6 months gained 30 back, so I have to start all over again, but I am going to try, thanks for the advise. I appreciate the information about hangover vs. withdrawel Keep up the good work. MossRoss, thanks for the support, I will get in touch for sure. Thanks everyone.

Why do I drink myself to sleep every night

                      Hi Needtoheal,
We are all healing here, mentally, physically, emotionally. This site helps with all of those things. One thing that will prevent that from happening is alcohol. I know when I was drinking, I couldn't take care of any of those things I just mentioned. It was awful just being. Now I feel so great in all of those things minus the weight I've put on. But I also know that I can take that off because I have the energy to do that. I also want to respect what I put into my body whereas I didn't care before. So removing al has a great effect on so many areas of our lives. Glad you're ready to let it go.
Sometimes what you're most afraid of doing is the very thing that will set you free.

                          Hi Need and welcome!!!

I can totally relate to your first post. For YEARS I drank myself to sleep every night, only it wasn't really sleep, it was more a state of unconsciousness. I isolated myself a lot too, and was often drinking out of boredom. Have a good read around the site, you will find people in all stages of their quit. We're glad you're here and look forward to getting to know you!

Just a thought needtoheal - if you're feeling lonely perhaps when you start back with the workouts you take it to the gym or throw in a run in the park? I know that one can feel lonely even in a crowd but breaking away from the isolation . . . . I know for me joining a Dojan did both cut down on the time I felt lonely and externalize a sense of accountability. And I still don't know most people's name.
