Cravings! and its only 1230 pm!

    Hello All

I have been off and on My way out for alot of years.. I have tried to quit unsuccessfully, except for 2 weeks or so in January 2014... The cravings come earlier and earlier every day.. I was able to moderate last night, as i only had a little bit of wine left and i also indulged in a couple beers to make up what i lacked in wine... Here it is Friday at 12:30 in the afternoon and the cravings are strong enough to make me want to run out and buy some wine, and just have "one" to cool the internal screaming! My kids are at camp, and nobody is here to stop me.. I also smoke, and just had one cig to help self medicate, all that did was to make me want wine that much more.. I'm going to have a glass of OJ and maybe the sugar will help and take a shower, my BP is pounding and i feel sick to my stomach, i know its craving, and even WDs . Help me get off this roller coaster!

    Hi, WhiteMarshMom--

I had a horrible two days when I quit - such bad anxiety, both from the booze and from the prospect of an alcohol free life. I recommend ice cream, but go to an ice cream shop so you're not tempted at the grocery store. Or get someone to bring it to you!

Take a long, hot bath with some Epsom salt and/or lavender - supposed to be detoxifying. Drink PLENTY of fluids and stay full from as much food as you can handle.

I'm not sure how much you were drinking, but if you need, call your doctor - it is dangerous to go without if you have been drinking a lot.

Stay close and keep posting rather than drinking. This 24 hours will stink but then it all gets better.

Hello WHM, just remember that if you take that drink of alcohol, you're just kicking the can down the road. Sooner of later, you're going to have to deal with withdrawal symptoms if you're serious about quitting. The bad news is that acute withdrawal is a bitch. The good news is that after 5-7 days you should be ok.

I wouldn't personally recommend tapering, but if you feel like you're in serious danger, you could try it if you feel like you have the self-control not to get drunk again. I would recommend trying to find a detox center. Hospitals, at least in the United States, have little to offer detoxing alcoholics.
In the middle of my life's journey, I found myself in a dark wood, as I had lost the straight path. It is a difficult thing to speak about, how wild, harsh and impenetrable that wood is. Just thinking about it recreates the fear. It is scarcely less bitter than death, but in order to tell of the good that I found there, I must tell of the other things I saw there. --Dante, paraphrased

Thanks! the orange juice and hot shower helped.not sure for how long, i work from my home and i typically start drinking wine about 330 4pm, because i know the kids will be home from camp/school soon after that.. I usually drink at least 2 bottles of wine a night and have been smoking a pack of cigarrettes along with that, i can feel the progressive nature of this horrible addiction and my increase in both drinking and smoking and i feel helpless

Whitemarshmom, I just wanted to say I can so relate to how you are feeling, those first few weeks for me were a killer with what I called cravings. I joined an AA group and found great support from "my group". I know not everyone gets that from AA, but I did. They have a word for helping cravings and its called HALT, it stands for hunger, anger, lonely and tired. This held true for me, keep yourself well fed, get lots of rest and drink lots of liquids, I also found if I stayed busy the demon al thoughts would go away after awhile. Just try one day at a time and if you feel you need help, call a doctor or have a friend come over to watch over you. Take care and my best wishes are with you!

oh and I drank lots of gator aid the first few days, it helped me replenish the dehydration I had inflected on myself, as well as vitamin B.

              Hi Whitemarsh
I think the Ice cream is a good idea if you have more cravings. I find that when I quite drinking wine I crave sugar and carbs. I also find a nap helps. It turns the switch off for a while.
I am going through the same thing only later in the day around 5:00 pm. Can you get out for a walk or something?
              Hugs, R4L

                  Hi Whitemarsh,

A large ditto to all of the above. The cravings in the first few days are really rough. Distraction & relaxation, I found really worked for me. This site is an amazing distraction, just reading old posts can while away the hours, and help the cravings pass.

When things got really bad a nap does help hugely. Have you got any relaxation CD's? I found laying quietly whilst listening to one had a much needed calming effect on my racing mind and was a huge distraction.

I can not recommend 'Take Control of Alcohol' by Alisa Frank enough!! It calms me and sends me off to sleep in minutes. It is my stop the world moment. I have listened to it daily for the last few months and wow, for me it is working. No cravings, no desire to drink and even the smell of Al I now find rancid!! Long may it last!

I haven't tried listening to it whilst eating ice-cream yet, but I like the idea! But yes, ice-cream helped me hugely too. Sweet and cold.

I hope you find what works for you, just keep trying everything and ride it. It will pass. I also focus on how good waking up sober will be, with one more day sober under my belt.

                  Sending you :l :l:l

I read in a book don't fear thinking about drink accept it and think of something else, also dehydration can be mislead by alcoholics as craving for alcohol when your body justs needs water, so drink a couple of pints of water and think about something else. Sometimes it can be as simple as that

                      Hi WM,

I truly hope things are improving for you. I too work from home, drank lots of wine, and usually started around 4 pm (cuz after all it was cocktail hour - more like hours for me!)

You've gotten great advice so far -- in my first month being AF, I stuck like glue to MWO. I learned (that's putting it way to strongly) how to knit and made the world's ugliest, biggest potholder! I would walk in place for 15 minutes just to get the endorphins working and that helped a lot, I ate licorice like a demon, I read every book on al I could find (try Drinking, A Love Story - wonderful book), and most important, I wrote down all the reasons I wanted to kick al out of my life and the benefits I thought that would bring. I was brutally honest and still cry when I re-read it. I've been blissfully sober for more than six months and believe me when I say the benefits are far greater than I ever could have imagined. Life's problems didn't go away, but I can deal with all of them now with clarity I hadn't had for many years. Oh, and the health benefits are tremendous - I feel so much better and I look better too! You can do this - lean on us, use us, reach out and post or read as much as possible. I may not post as much as I used to, but I lurk every single day. The wonderful friends I've made here are deep in my heart and being now - and I hope you will be too.

                      Much love,
                      Mary Lou
