Heavenly, I think that is just the thing the play wines are best for.. I had a bottle of the champagne at my birthday dinner and makes me feel less left out than drinking sparkling water. If you can't find the Ariel there is also a brand called Fre that is not bad. And the great thing is, its only 50 calories per 8 oz glass!!!

Dancealot, I am that way too lol, I drink hot tea like crazy.. Thirsty a lot.. I think part of my alcohol problem may be a "drinking" problem.. anyone else notice that?

I never thought about a "drinking" problem. Since I've been af, I always have a cup of coffee on hand. I was a day drinker and that's the way I drank so I thought it was a carry over. But thinking back, before I began my drinking career, I use to always have a coke cola on hand. Hmmm.

I'm glad to see an active thread in long term abstinence again.

Interesting topic guys, I now go through decaf coffee like there is no tomorrow.

That said, even in my drinking days I would go through a prodigious volume of non-AL liquid during week days (weekends were my "get torn" days!?!?!?) and I still average +- 2 litres of water, albeit sparkling, per day.

Just as an aside, I am wondering if that may be the reason for me not being in a worse state of health after quitting AL? Ponderous.

            Grim

I used grapefruit juice as a mixer. I've sometimes wondered if all that Vit c is what helped me stay healthy during those 'dark day'?

Reading this thread brought to mind the movie-Days of Wine and Roses, with Jack Lemmon and Lee Remick. To me, that was such a powerful movie and way ahead of it's time.

It has taken so long for the crippling results of alcoholism to come out of the shadows of prejudice (although we still have a long way to go there.) and start being treated as the serious addiction it is.

I'm the same way, Grim, and thinking back, I always did/do have a glass of water, tea, or diet coke (many years ago on that one) in hand during the day (I drank at night mostly). I generally ate pretty healthy too, am big on vitamins and supplements, and the last time (only time) I had my liver enzymes tested, they were normal (which I didn't expect).

Did anybody know W.C. Fields, the old alcoholic comic from way back was also big into nutrition and vitamins, and this was supposedly why he lived as long as he did? Not that that's any excuse or way to live, sober is better, but nutrition makes a big difference. The idea of supplements being useful was a big part of what attracted me to MWO.

Lilmea, I have been having fleeting thoughts of that movie since coming to MWO. I first saw it when I was in my 20s - even then it resonated (I knew inside I was like those people). It is a very realistic, frightening portrayal of alcoholism, from the start, and then the spiral down and down. Maybe we need to have MWO movie night - this is a must see to anyone who's never seen it. I can still see to this day the scene in the greenhouse, and the scene at the end.

Dancelot, I am truly wondering if all the soft drinks I used to drink in the day also saved my liver somewhat ....??
My liver enzymes always shocked my doctor as they were perfectly normal !!!

I haven't seen the film and now I am sober 2 yrs 6 months I don't know if dare.

I seem to have cycles of shaky times, maybe now I am noticing them I should just make a note and see if there is any regularity to the times of craving a drink ... it might help me to reduce the crave before it starts .... I could use kudzu as it worked before ...

Heavenly - Were there any other factors besides soft drink consumption? Like what you ate or didn't, and were you taking vitamins, herbs, supplements on a regular basis? I find this fascinating. I guess it could be genetic or who knows what else. At least it looks like we all like lots of liquid, all the time. I have one friend who barely ever touches alcohol, but gets leg cramps from "forgetting" to drink enough water. I go crazy without a cup or glass of something by me, especially sitting at a computer. I also drank tons of tea for years before I ever developed a taste for coffee.

Has anyone else had the experience of normal liver enzymes when you knew it shouldn't be the case?

Let us know how the note keeping goes. I personally want to be aware of what kinds of triggers long term abbers experience. I know for myself, I have to be aware of things like birth and death dates of departed family members - I will definitely feel off on those days, and am not always immediately aware of why. I'm sure there's other things, too. Probably good to keep the kudzu around for emergencies, or to take before a known but possibly stressful event.

If you watch that movie, it's not something I'd do last thing at night either. We still need our rest, right?

Have a great day everyone and, much love to you all.

Heavenly-I was caught of guard by how difficult the seasonal changes were for me. Maybe that's part of the cycles of shaky times you mentioned? Something for me to think about.

Dance-I'm afraid my liver enzymes were high as well as my BP. But everything is back to normal now that I'm af.

Grim-I was very young when I watched that movie and even then, it set off faint alarm bells. Strange.

Well, I'm off for an afternoon walk. Have a good day everyone.

Well, I didn't notice any (maybe familial - a close relative is a heavy drinker) but for me personally no.....
As for diet ... I was always on the seefood diet ... yep, you got it - I saw it and I ate it !!!
So no supplements nor healthy eating really ... it's a mystery

                            30 days and beyond

Hi All, This is an interesting topic, and yes, I too consume a lot of liquids during the day. I have two cups, sometimes 3 cups of coffee in the AM, along with a couple of glasses of water. I switch to tea in the afternoon. I switch up the tea, some black teas and some herbal. I have a tea collection you wouldn't believe!

When I was drinking, I never seemed to be able to sip wine....nope! I drank it as though it was water. I tried drinking water while drinking wine, but I would still manage to get drunk. As for diet and supps, I eat a pretty healthy diet for the most part, but I can be bad about skipping meals and lately I have taken up snacking......I am currently kicking that habit! I do take supplements and I know they make a big difference.

Dancelot, I think that you might have something about seasonal changes and thoughts of drinking. But then again, I think due to our being problem drinkers or alcoholics, which ever we choose to name our problem......I think anything can bring on thoughts of drinking.....good or bad. Though these drinking thoughts are more rare these days.....they still rear their ugly head from time to time.

                            Glad you are all here!!

That's a first ... I was driving home and I thought ''Oh I MUST get some lager for tonight'' ..... I knew which one I wanted and it definitely wasn't the alcoholic kind ..... now you can all kick my arse and tell me I'm weird ......

I know this is a bit off topic. But I was excited to read this. My cravings have started to diminish. More like vague cravings for something. But I must not forget to stay on guard for those times when they "rear their ungly heads"
