Quiet around here. What's everyone doing for fun & entertainment?
I took my girls to Longwood Gardens today, the weather was perfect.
Unfortunately my grandaughter fell asleep in the stroller & completely missed lunch :HAF since 03/26/09

I'm a bit late to the party as usual, but our local zoo had a "famous" giraffe because her neck was bent to one side. They said she wasn't in pain, and she lived a long life and died of old age...she was a local celebrity. I think they put a plaque up in her honor. I remember seeing her for years...everyone has a picture of themselves with the crooked neck giraffe in the background. LOL
Congrats to the Triplets! We are so proud of you!:heart:I love my daughter more than alcohol:heart:

No one laughed at my giraffe joke... well, it's not the first time!!
We were talking over in the nest this morning...well, I was, about what is your mantra when the going gets hard? Mine is 'One drink is not going to do me any good'. Is there something you say to yourself that gets you thru? Just curious....I know in those first couple weeks, that mantra got me thru when DickHead started talking about just one for old times' sake....just one at lunch with the girls...or just one with dinner. I had to modify that somewhat, because my wine glasses kept getting bigger until they were dang Viking Goblets!! Ahh, what the addicted head will tolerate. Just one never meant just one anyway...no matter what size the glass was. When I was trying to moderate, I'd get really ticked off when I'd order a glass and it was a Barbee sized glass (normal size to others). I'd always make up for this slight when I got home. Those were NOT the good old days! It was a maddening game of constant deprivation...or so it seemed...whatever I was getting, wasn't nearly enough. There at the end, it was just crazy...it was as if I was drinking to see how much I COULD drink?! I'd wake up on the couch, see half a glass of wine left in my cup, gulp it down and go right off to bed. What good did that do? I can't tell myself I loved the taste, as it's hard to taste it when you are gulping. What an awful time....Addiction sucks. Getting out of the cycle, however, rocks! Thank you, Lav, for believing in me, even when I didn't believe in myself. Take some comfort in the fact that you truly did save at least one life.....mine. XXOO, Byrdie

Hello people.
Byrdie, just read your post there - mantra's. Never thought I had one - in the early days, it was simply about clocking up days and weeks...in a way so as i created a new non-drinking habit. But I do think whether I will ever drink again and for me, right now, what prevents me are a few things. Some of these include:
1. I run so much now, and would hate to wake up one morning feeling even slightly icky and not be able to run - or decide that an hour in bed to nurse me head was somehow 'better'
2. I'm scared - what if I fell right back into drinking like I used to? Stopping is damn hard.
3. Most importantly - I don't feel I am through the journey of healing (hmmm... not sure I like the word healing here... but it'll do for now)... one thing I have realised of late is that it TAKES TIME to heal. It TAKES TIME for things to change. Although some things may initially change quickly, real long term change (for me anyway) is a slow and gradual process that TAKES AND DEMANDS PATIENCE. BUT.... I want to believe it IS worth it... so I keep at it. And right now that means being AF. 6 months sober is a drop in the ocean...
By the way, I am SO not a patient person :H (so i'm doing pretty well on that account:H)

I'm not too clever or poetic - if something tempts me, my internal response is something on the order of: Oh, wait, you don't drink anymore.
If my head keeps arguing with that, I move on to something like yours: You don't want a drink, so forget it.
I've gotta say, I'm keeping it pretty simple and that part of my brain that has been so stupid for so long finally seems to be getting it !

Oh Byrdie, I forgot to tell you I fell out of my chair laughing at your Giraffe joke! :H
My mantra(s) are probably gettin' pretty old around these boards "A craving will never last as long as a hangover" and "you'll never wake up in the morning wishing you'd drank the night before". Oldies but goodies I'd say. LOL
Now keep those jokes rollin' lady.:heart:I love my daughter more than alcohol:heart:

Hi friends,
Thanks for all your kind words about my nine months. I actually started working very hard on my alcohol abuse a year ago this month. On June 22 I saw too many bottles in the re cycle bin, mostly mine. I made it 30 days, then drank maybe 3-4 times in July/August. Finally got my act together Sept 1, haven't had nor wanted even a taste since then. In the summer I used to sip wine frequently on the patio, but I mostly didn't drink last summer so I'm not feeling intimidated by the summer at hand. I am feeling SOOO good physically, better than in several years. In spite of daunting physical diagnoses, I just can't believe how much time I'm spending engaged in gardening. So I'm feeling very strong physically and mentally. Life after drinking only get better, doesn't it? I so much appreciate the support here.My life is better without alcohol, since 9/1/12. My sobriety tool is the list at permalink 236 on the toolbox thread under monthly abstinance.

Well hello everyone!
I asked where everyone was & poof - you all appear :H:H
RC, I totally agree with you on the topic of healing/changing time. We didn't get into trouble overnight so we sure are not going to heal overnight. I think that's what holds us back from getting started on this journey in the first place - fear of the unknown.
NS, K9, Sunbeam - you are all doing great too
Byrdie, I am happy that I grabbed you by the arm when I did. Look at you now!!!!!AF since 03/26/09

It's Friday...YAY! I am sucking down the antabuse because I'm hitting that "hard" time of year. My daughter will be gone for a few weeks and DickHead is trying to get back together with me, even though I told him we broke up a long time ago!:heart:I love my daughter more than alcohol:heart:

K9, DickHead has a mind of his own, all right!! He's an opportunist! There aren't enough O's in SMOOOOOOOOTH to describe him! Best to take that simple precaution! Can you imagine being at this point and having to start all over? THAT is mind boggling to me. Since I operate out of fear, that's enough to keep me going! Whatever it takes!!
Speaking ok K9's, that Tropical Storm Andrea is passing thru, my little dog gets really fearful even before the storms get going, I wonder if it's the drop in barometric pressure? She is like Butt Velcro! I ought to put her in our Newbie's Nest to help everyone stay in tight! I looked out the window a while ago and there was a lady on a bicycle flying by! (Ar, ar, ar)
Hope everyone is getting ready for a great weekend. Lav, hang on to Stella and the other critters, they're liable to take flight in this wind!!! XXOO, B

My female shepherd was terribly afraid of storms and such. We got her a thunder shirt and it works GREAT! Well worth the money.
Happy weekend all!Well it's all right now. I've learned my lesson well. You see you can't please everyone, so you've got to please yourself.

Siren, you are just showing off with your animated graphics (and it's working!!)
It's not the thunder and lightning, but the wind that my Chihuahua is so afraid of...I wonder if that shirt would help her? I JUST saw those advertised on tv and wondered if they really work!! Do they make it in pink with feathers and sequins? :H:H:H

Thunder shirt is supposed to help with anything that causes dogs anxiety.

Have you guys seen the biography of Temple Grandin? Her efforts to calm herself from the anxiety she experienced because of autism led not only to more humane treatment of farm animals but also to those shirts. It is a fabulous movie to watch if you're stuck indoors this weekend because Andrea is raining on your parade: Temple Grandin (TV 2010) - IMDb.
Happy AF weekend to all of you - wet or not!
