    Hi Friends,

I caught Brene Brown on NPR's On Being with Krista Tippet the other day: Brené Brown on the Courage to be Vulnerable | On Being

Anyone else listen to it? I had seen the links in people's signatures but I didn't know too much about her. I liked the show, especially the parts about parenting (which is consuming my entire life right now in a good way ).

Please feel free to send any unwanted snow up this way! We were expecting a good dump, but it didn't pan out.

      Hi, Pinecone

I think I've listened to every Podcast/Interview BB has been on. Her message doesn't vary too much but sometimes the way she words it in a particular instance really resonate with me more than how she phrases it at other times (sort of like how the same "don't drink dummy" message can be written in many ways - some of which a particular person can really understand but others fall on deaf ears - like I'm pretty sure my example would :H).

I've also read a couple of BB's books and particularly liked The Gifts of Imperfection. I have Daring Greatly on a tablet now but have been distracted by other books lately.

You are reading her parenting information at the right time, while your daughter is young. Much of her work concerns females and body image. The more of that grief your daughter can be spared, the better, and I think fathers can play a big role.

You must be just the best dad! :l

        MAE all,
Had a rough night..I posted it on other threads so no need to duplicate it here. Still sober and really tired...did nothing today except lounge on the couch and watch TV. What a slug I am....hopefully I can get a good nights sleep. Much to do tomorrow, or not...I am not stressing myself out over anything if I can help it...that is so hard for me..being a type A personality but it will be my undoing if I don't...I know it can be done!

Dottie, I just posted a response in the NN to you
Type A's run a higher risk for developing heart disease - not good!
Did you get the MWO Hypno CDs? Have you tried doing any mediation?
They both helped me thru some tremendous stress, believe me
Take good care of yourself, we want to keep you around now that you've gotten here!

Dottie, I posted a simple meditation on the toolbox thread not too long ago.

I made gingerbread cupcakes this morning. Plan to serve them to some friends at a work gathering this afternoon. I also have a Christmas luncheon today at a restaurant. Some people may purchase a glass of wine, but not most. Certainly not me.

Thanks sunbeam I wil check out the tool box. Still looking for the CD's..when we replaced the flooring in the family room I had to clean out all the furniture and they were in the entertainment center and of course dh cleaned that out without consulting with me..so of course he has no clue where he put things....maybe this is also why I am stressed....
Also made a doc appointment for next week...taking care of me first...what a concept!

                    Good afternoon friends,

Dottie, I hope you're feeling better soon! I'll just echo what Lav is recommending as far as meditation for stress. I've been doing it everyday since August and it is really paying dividends as far as stress reduction (among other benefits).

NS, BB's concepts are hitting me at the right time, I think. There is more life to be lived in allowing things to happen and being present for the results, whatever they are, then trudging ahead at all costs towards some kind of perceived perfect ideal. I'll have to seek out the writings on body image/growing up female, any suggestions? There is so much out there in pop culture that is very, very wrong. Looking at the suggested titles on Netflix for example, most of the crap marketed towards girls is very, very wrong. We don't watch alot of TV...

A nice cold day with light snow. We played outside this morning and will probably go back out. Cabbage, whitebean and potato soup on the stove. AF all the way and life is pretty sweet.

                    Have a great AF day!

Pinecone, when I can get my daughter-in-law's attention for a minute I will ask her for a book recommendation. She is finishing up her master's degree in social work/family therapy. I have a feeling she will know of something
When my daughter was growing up I just told her flat out - those models you see in magazines are not real people. They are airbrushed photos & they do not represent a healthy woman. Many of them have eating disorders not to mention all the basic unhealthy lifestyles. As a matter of fact I told my son the same thing, Barbie is not real, look for a real girl
Glad we all got thru that stage OK!!
                      Soup sounds good!

                        Hi, Pinecone

Fortunately, there is a great deal of information out there. The problem is that the images in the media are so powerful and ubiquitous so there is a lot of work to do to neutralize those. It sounds like Lav had good success with her kids of both sexes.

This TED talk by a high-fashion model really gets to the point: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KM4Xe6Dlp0Y and this book is an oldie but goodie: Reviving Ophelia: Saving the Selves of Adolescent Girls: Mary Pipher, Ruth Ross: 9781594481888: Amazon.com: Books.

Our daughter watched A League of Their Own (1992) - IMDb when she was about 9 and it remains her favorite movie - one of the few with really great, diverse female images.

                          Hi Friends,

Lav and NS, thanks for the replies! At first, I was wondering what that topic had to do with sobriety and AF life. Then I remembered that it might be the kind of thing that I would neglect to think about if I were still drinking. Or maybe not neglect it as a "concept" but probably fail to think about it hard enough to the point of benefit. I was a pretty geeky and neurotic kid growing up, but I know that girls have to deal with a slightly different world. I have to admit that I really don't know the first thing about that.

                          Thanks again!

Pinecone, there are several people on Facebook who give that message of self-acceptance. Go Kaleo, Sean Flannigan, 180 Degree Health are all excellent and inspirational. You don't have to actually post on Facebook to receive whatever messages you like. I also get a lot of good gardening info there.

                              Well....
today is Friday the 13, as Churchy the turtle of Pogo used to say "Friday the 13th came on a Friday this month." He would worry to no end whether Friday the 13th would fall on a Friday of any month. If it fell, say, on a Wednesday, it a calamity.
