    October Mod Squad

    Hi All

I've been out of action for the last couple of days (internet connection down). Took a while to read through all your posts...

Sorry to hear about your episode Stewarts - glad you are through it now though.

Nice post Eve - I did not know that MWO provided that service...

So was that a Thai red chicken curry soup you were making LG? Now, Thai food has to be my absolute 'all time' favorite, especially the curries and Phad thai. Do you have Thai restaurants in the States?

LG and others who are looking to shed a few pounds - I read an artlcle in one of our nationals yesterday about some new Japanese noodles (Zero Noodles) that only contain 10 calories per 200g, they make you feel full, but barely register on your waistline! Made of 96% water and contain konjac (Asian ground root). It might be worth seeing if you can get them where you live - a health food chain were selling them over here before they sold out due to demand! You could probably use them in stirfries.

Unlikely that I will be online again until I get back from Santorini (in time to post before the 31st). I have to get provisions prepared for all the beasties (3 dogs - 1 from Thailand, 1 tortoise, 2 cockatiels, 3 parrots and a cockatoo plus two ponds of koi carp) for the part-time zoo keeper! You can tell what my aspirations were as a child eh!

You all take care of yourselves and be good :l

      Chaaku1,
If you get this in time to respond, how long will you be in Santorini? We were in Greece a few years ago. Loved it! Stayed mostly in Athens but did take a ferry tour to 3 small islands. Everyone there said Santorini was the place to go but we were so hung up on our Hilton Hotel overlooking the Parthenon that we didn't want to spend a night somewhere else. We decided to put Santorini on our "to be done in the future list". I'll be curious to know what you did, etc. I just love the white buildings with blue trim in Greece. Such a beautiful place! You will have a great time I know.

Happy Saturday everyone. Busy with boy's sports today. Going to a play tonight and don't think we'll fit drinking into the plan so only 1 night this week of AL. Sounds good to me.

So, I said I would post, the rest of my weekend was fine and mostly AL Free..we had a dinner for my dad's bday, all that resulted in was two glasses of Perseco, which, imho, is like drinking flavored water with a little bit of bubbles. I got good rest and had a nice run on Saturday....I had to run in old shoes, not surre where my right ones are, I think my maid threw them out, which if is the case, she's fired....good thing I am tapering now.

My Saturday was AL Free and mellow, got a lot of stuff done after the run, did a little food shopping, etc. Got some work done and oh, watched Permetheous...interesting movie.

As for my weight, my gf was giving me crap about this, not that I'm over weight, that I am bitching about being over weight...she thinks I'm crazy...I should probably clarify, when I say I am over weight, I mean overweight for what I want my marathon weight to be, which in my case is 5 pounds, I know sounds pathetic I'm bitching about that (maybe 7).

Next two weeks, need to stretch a lot, and finish up my last remaing runs...all he real long ones are gone, I won't know until 11/4 if I trained well or not. I was going over my training log and I have been hitting my times, actually I've been getting much lower than I have had to, especially on my speed workouts; and, anyone that has ever trained in Central Park, knows anything outside of the Park seems like a breeze.

I'm not sure why I got so anxious and agitated that morning, like I said, I think I just ran myself down. Like I said, when I spoke to my friend, she felt AWFUL about her friend's stupid behaviour toward me for no reason....and let's face it, I was pretty much looking forward to getting laid that night and some random crazy woman foiled it for me.... As my friend and I discussed, we'll have to have a make up night....

Sunday and Football is a fun day out in NYC. Not sure if I'm going out or not, if I do, I know I will have a few beers, no worries though, the marathon coming up will be in the back of mind...I only drink light beer anyway on these days...

        Everyone have a great Sunday.

        j.

          Hi everyone,

Just popping by to say hi. Stewarts - good luck with the marathon. My bother is doing the NYC one that day also. He used to live there, on 34th Street I believe, and works for AmEx - so as long as he pops into the office sometime around 11/4, he gets his flights paid to and from NY. Lucky sod.

I'm at 35 completed AF days, my first big "quit" (though i recently realised that i did do 6 days AF back in Jan 2011... but without the support of such a place as this, it never did stick). However as some of you know, my mind is still dithering as to how to approach AL after 30days AF. I still don't know. But it's good to see your words, Eve, that
The beautiful thing about our mod board is people can sway, ponder, abstain or moderate and we are here to help you figure out what works for you. Abstain and fall off the wagon, you can come here...drink too much and want to drunk post (can't drunk dial but you can drunk post)...well, guess what...you can come here. Everyone is welcome to test the waters of whether they think they can moderate because we all need choices.
though i'd hate to drunk post!

I was trying to do a plan of when i might like to drink, if i were to try this out. And if I were to choose this route, then there is one condition i would need to hold to, that is:

to not drink for the sake of drinking

In other words, to not let AL back into my life and let it be used as it was previously (every night, at least 4 beers / btle of wine)...Or, just hitting the bar when bored. So, in writing the plan and looking at when i might like to drink, that did not include mindless drinking or drinking with HALT in mind, then there didn't really seem to be too many times.

Byrdie's Mr Richard Head, though, is still very much a live voice in the head. And i do hear him, daily, tempting me down the line of drinking the whole bottle, of staying longer in the bars. I hear him. But don't heed him. I just don't like hearing him!

          Monday morning thoughts...

Gonna got some more cuppajoe. Have a great Monday everyone

            AL Free until the Marathon

So, I did have a couple of beers watchiing some of the games last night. I had several friends coming in and out of the bar. I closed my tab, because I thought I probably went over my limit of four to say 5 or 6 glasses (we were ordering pitchers, easy to lose count some time). Then some random guy buys me and my buddy another pitcher of something darker, a beer, don't remember what it was. I drink a glass, I don't think I even finish it, I say to myself, it's time to eat and go home. So I do. I was a little buzzed, but FAR From anything close to druink.

I call a friend and she comes over to watch some of the baseball game, there is no more alcohol for the rest of the night and I go to bed at a good time.

At some point around 4:30 though I wake up feeling, weird, kind of ill, but weird. I drink some water, shiver for a little bit, get back to bed, wake up several more times shivering. So I said to myself, "Screw it, I'm getting ready for work." I take a shower, eat a little something, get on my way here, it goes away.

Now, I feel fine now, a little malnourished, but I'm okay...weird!! I don't know if it was bad beer taps or bad Chinese food or a little of both.

Anyway, with two week left to the marathon, I told myelf a while ago, with two weeks to go I had to seriously watch what I point in my body, and I'm not just talking about aclohol - food supplement, etc.

Running Courage, thank you for the support, good luck to your brother as well.

LB - thx for reply re: low carb. I'm trying to get more protein and eat more fruits & veggies. That's a start. My son-in-law recently lost 48# doing low carb - quite quickly I might add. He did add exercise into the equation and has always been one to drop weight quickly. Now mind you I didn't say easily because I know he has to work at it but still he will start a diet and a few weeks later he's down 20#. BTW, he curtailed his alcohol greatly. Wants to be a social drinker but no longer a daily drinker.

Chakku1 - have heard of those noodles. Think here in U.S. we need to buy online. Not positive.

Stewart - will be keeping fingers crossed for great weather for the NY race. I have a framed poster of the NY finish line dedicated to Fred Lebow after his cancer diagnosis - it says "Fred, this one's for you!" He lived quite a few years longer if my memory serves me correctly.

RC - love your tagline. So true. How much running are you doing these days?

TMH, thanks, so far it looks like the weather is looking good! Yes, Fred Lebow was a special man...and you are correct he did.

I can add something to the lowcarb conversation; yes, it does work. I try and eat more protein than carbs, even with marathon training. You're son-in-law losing all that weight quickly is not surprising, just changing your diet habits so dramatically, will cause you to shed weight fast (also, the times you eat -try to eat breakfast if you don't, I'll admit, I am sometimes not too good with remembering that - eating breakfast). of course curtailing alcohol does help a lot, also dependson what he liked to drink.

I am also starting to think last night was more the food than the beer..my stomach was not right for most of the morning. I did my 5 mile easy run earlier and felt a lot better...anyway, hope everyone is doing well.

Yes, I laughed when I read that post, I believe she likes to refer to him as Dick Head :H

                  RC,
I think the 30 days abstinence is always a good plan. Clears out the cobwebs and after sleeping better and feeling better, heck, some people just decide that the AF world is the one to stay in. Life has gotten so much easier to abstain. Seems that 20 years ago a person in recovery really stood out but no-one even notices anymore. So many choose to be AF for weight issues, health issues, etc. not just due to the fact that some have a real problem with it.

So, you will decide but if you ever read the post I have shared about what BlueSky said, he found it easy to forget the times AL gave him so much trouble due to his selective memory.

As we said, at least you can come here and post failures, thoughts of drinking, etc. without judgment as the mod site doesn't have the people here struggling to get through to the next minute.

                  Thanks for your thoughts.

Thanks Eve - appreciated. For now, I'm just sticking to my Goal 1 (see signature) until, say, there's a good enough 'reason' to consider having a drink... Being AF just now is habit forming (and i do have a habit of forming habits, albeit bad ones!).

TMH - running... well, i'm trying to stick at running three times a week. Though this is Scotland, so when waking up in the dark and seeing the glinting frost, the first thing i think of is "Now, that duvet from where i have just come, does seem a very good place for me to return..." :H Presently i'm looking for someone to join me in Barcelona in March to do the marathon there. Any takers?!?!

Hey all! The problem I find with low carb diets and having bipolar is that carbs raise seratonin, so my dietitian has got me on plenty of "good carbs" like chick peas etc that are working really well. I also eat lotsa nuts - and although they are full of fats they actually help me lose weight and maintain my equilibrium. Nuts for nuts lol if I don't have carbs in my diet it can actually lead to depression.
Cheers all and good luck Stewarts!

                        Happy Tuesday Fellow Squaders

I had checked in on some of other Mod Threads yesterday but missed checking in here..... See lots of us here.... I like that a lot of the discussion is revolving around diet and exercise........... Shows that for a lot of us, AL is no longer running our lives.............

Cash, I never even considered looking into the affects of different foods on a persons mood but I am really interested in it.....

Well I got a busy work day and need to get to it.

Hope everyone has a fabulous day!

I bet sugar and bread does release endorphins, lol. I can't justify eating food that really has no nutritional value just so I get regular sugar highs tho. I eat veggies and berries and nuts regularly! I'm only dropping the processed foods and sugar.

Only stopping in for a sec. Lmao, I wrote (sex) and edited. Hope everyone is well. Day two AF for me.

Vlivengood - they have a massive effect on mood - I've had to really change my diet to stay stable and most of its about seratonin - most clinically depressed people crave carbs ( or their meds make them crave carbs) for the seratonin rush. Same with ciggys hence the reason they are so hard to give up when you have psych issues as they give you a little seratonin boost each time. Dunno if you've ever been a smoker but often I used to be writing a paper, get a mental block, go out for a ciggy and - bing - the lights go on and you rush back to the computer! - seratonin is a wonderful thing unfortunately often comes with the wrong packaging...mmmm hot chips, lol
