Day 5 Cravings and Learning to Go Out to Dinner w/ Friends

    Hey Guys,

Well, I'm well into Day 5. That's the good thing.

The bad thing today is that I'm having the worst cravings. Seems strange! Thought it would be the first few days. Today my stomach is all knotted and tense and I am really feeling kind of weak.

And all I can think of is how much I want a drink.

On other boring fronts-- I've been sleeping much more than usual during the last several days. I don't know if it's the lack of booze or not (I mean, usually it helped me sleep, or so I thought). I come home from work and go right to snoozing. At least it helps me get through the night (my prime drinking hours).

OK, things in my life seem super boring these days. Absolutely YAWNsome.

    ANYWAY-- HERE"S THE WORRY

I'm going out to dinner with a friend tonight, and it's the first time since my AF decision.

I don't know what to do.

    How should I handle this?

I'm afraid of questions about why I'm not drinking, of being tempted, and MOST of having to eat a whole meal calmly w/o alcohol, when it will clearly be on my mind-- as I usually drink when out in restaurants. Especially with old friends. She'll notice, I'm sure.

    Aack.

Feeling a little unsteady on my feet today.

Hey groovy... I've used the excuse that I'm starting a diet, so I'm cutting unnecessary calories (granted, I'm sure people have wondered why I haven't lost any weight!):H

Everyone here is rooting for you...maybe you can look forward to the good feelings that would come with coming back to the boards later and report that you made it through? (and if you don't, no worries - that's what the support is for!)

    :goodluck:

      Hey Groovy,

I like Noella 'diet' because it works well as a long term excuse. Another is that you're taking medication ... if they ask what, say you can't remember the name.

      Best of luck!

Re: meds say it's an antibiotic and you don't remember the name, but alcohol decreases it's effectiveness.

        Good luck!

Day 5 Cravings and Learning to Go Out to Dinner w/ Friends

HEY GUYS, I'M BACK FROM DINNER!!!!

          I DID IT.:whee: :whee:

          weird though.

I called my friend when I was about 5 minutes away, and she asked if I wanted her to order me a beer.

So it would be ready when I got there.

          Mind you, she doesn't drink.

          My reputation precedes me.

          I am a years long, regular-like-a-clock drinker.

So I decided to drink tea. Lots and lots of tea.

She didn't ask why I wasn't drinking-- thank god. But I could tell she was puzzled.

Thank you guys who responded with the truly helpful advice on how to cope with suddenly not drinking amongst friends and family.

It was rough but I made it through.

Seriously wavered and wanted that beer SOO madly.

So much my stomach turned a little, you know what I mean? Like I could taste it.

But heck, nobody said this was going to be easy!!! Nothing worth it ever is, right?

Hi and congrats on making it thru the dinner!!
It does get easier. Not only do the cravings get less but the anxiety about these kinds of social situations gets better too.

I have to say that I love your Calvin Coolidge quote. I have never heard that --guess he was a smart President afterall!

Good on ya, well done. Future try to drink water. The less caffeine you drink the better it is. Flush your system with water. Better still.
