The best times in my life were when I was sober ...

    :welcome:

Thought this would make an interesting new thread that would hopefully inspire people. Can't really take the credit for it I'm aftraid as I was inspired by a post I read on the Oct 3rd thread left by "ready to try" in which she mentions that the best events in her life were when she was sober and the worst when she was drunk - this got me thinking too.

Looking back on my life (I'm 37) the best times included
passing major exams, graduating, running and completing marathons, travelling, the birth of my children, my wedding (never really touched a drop that day as too much going on), getting a new puppy as a child, great holidays, significant things i've achieved at work, great days out with friends / family etc all of which were done sober.

    Wondered what others thought...

Have a good AF day everyone

That's because we were sober and could remember them....Ha! IAD.

Sausage: That is such a true statement for me too. I too think it has to do w/being able to participate, be there fully, & remember everything afterwards. For me, within the last 5 years, being there for the birth of my first grandson was the pinnacle. Unfortunately, I had to babysit for him when the second one was born so couldn't be there for his birth.

I think, as an alcoholic, I forget that when I check out w/alcohol, I'm checking out of the good as well as the bad...the joyful as well as the stressful & uncomfortable. That's too much of a sacrifice. Also, for me, when I drink, the emotional backwash is very, very lasting. I feel guilty long after the hangover has healed.

I don't need that in my life. Mary

          The best times.....

          Sausage,

Thank you so much for starting the thread. I just got back from an out of town engagement party for our son and his lovely fiancee. And I did not touch a drop, and it was WONDERFUL! This is my 5th night AF and I hope and pray that I can keep on going. My husband is supportive, but not to the extent that he's going to give up his nightly cocktails. He may if he needs to drop a few pounds (he's thin, though). I have much more of a problem than he does. We only drink at night, but I was really sucking down the wine. I went to one of the link sites and a sign of alcohol abuse is a craving for one particular poison. Mine was Chardonnay. Well, with a little help from my friends, I'm abstaining. No withdrawal symptoms so far, and no terrible cravings. Diet Sprite is a nice evening drink and so is decaf ice tea. It's still hot here in the South.
Thank you again and you sure have my wholehearted support.
          L.
