    Hopes and Plans for 2009

Hi All, I thought it would be interesting to share our hopes and aspirations for 2009, as I've been thinking a lot about goals lately -- especially goals beyond being sober. I feel like being AF is just the start of my recovery in a way, as my relationship with AL has led to a pretty dysfunctional and unfulfilling life. I feel that the more I become engaged and committed to my life, the further I get from AL.

So, for me, beyond being AF in 2009, I hope to:

Recommit to my friends and family: Spend as much time with them as I can or at least call and write to them. I've floated the idea to hubby that we take a trip back east to make the rounds of all our "people" in NYC and the Baltimore area -- somehow fate has conspired to place them all there instead of California.

Make new friends: I don't make friends easily. Partially because I'm a rather quirky person and partially because I don't think I ever learned the skills necessary for it (as a child I was always with adults or alone, and as an adult I was always drinking). Also I'm not a "joiner". I'm actually reading a few books on how to make friends -- I know thats dorky and somewhat pathetic, but there you go. Its also hard as an adult in a new place to make friends.

Take a knitting class: My sister has encouraged me to do this, it sounds fun

Check out a local Vipassana meditation group and hopefully join it (Thank you to WIP for recommending a book on this). This group actually meets at a lighthouse!

Take some workshops with a creative coach I found to jump start my artwork

    Exercise:
riding my bike, strenuous hikes, eventually running or joining the health club

    Find work:
Put myself out there as a graphic designer -- something I haven't done in 10 years

    Set up my studio
(this will involve unpacking everything thats still in the garage from our move) so I can start doing metal smithing again

    Look into sailing classes
    at the local yacht club

    Take kayaking lessons

Probably other things, but so far this is my list.

SD: What a wonderful list! I'm going to think this through & come up w/my own list. I've actually always loved the arrival of the new year. There's something very appealing about making a list of the goals I have for the new year. Thank you. I'll be back w/a list of my own. I loved yours...it was so specific. I think that the more specific, the more attainable the goal is. Mary

SD just for info we are thinking about goals and plans on the mod squad forum. it started by asking how many days out of the 365 in 2009 do we want to be AF, for some perhaps 365 for others??????, join in if you wanting to moderate, its a great place but of course if you are abstaining then perhaps not. you didnt mention what your goal was for A, even so sounds like a great plan you certainly have your priorities right. will look forward to reading others plan when like me they have thought it through fully and will commit x

              Great list SD
I always try and think up ambitions / resolutions at the start of a year and jot them down in the front of my diary - sadly in the last 2 or 3 years when drinking has taken over, I haven't really achieved many of them. Although Ive not been AF for the whole of 2008, by the end of 2008 I will have achieved over 250 AF days which I think is pretty good compared to 2007 and 2006 when I consumed alcohol virtually every day.

I will come up with my own list and revisit the thread - thanks for getting it started!!

                My Goals -
                -Tone up my body
-Make new friends (No, SD, not pathetic, it is hard for me as well, as I like to be alone so much)
-Throw each of my kids a nice birthday party (very hard for me, but I will this year, and enlist help if I need to, but the last few years of my life have been very very chaotic)
-Refocus my life, and decide why I am here, maybe get a bit spiritual
                well, there's a start.

Tis definitely a great thing to do, and definitely something that requires more than an off the cuff or spur of the moment listing, and it's great to see the posts above reflecting the need for some sincere reflection ...

I, too, hope to find my way back to this thread with something of my own, and to offer support and get ideas from others.

Edit: ... oh and the fear of failure is also very real, and failure can be so damn disappointing. BUT, better to have tried to do something and failed, than to have tried to do nothing and succeeded. Well, that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

I think we should take turns keeping this thread bumped up over the next few weeks. It's great for this period in time with all of our journeys.
