    Why alcohol?

Hi Addicted and Welcome to MWO. There is a thread for 'just starting out' or Need Help ASAP at the start of the site which may put you in touch with others who are still asking the same questions and may make your question accessible to a broader audience.

Having said that, it's great to hear you here and to hear you voice something that so many people have previously felt and are fighting with - that life is just too dammed hard without the support of alcohol.

What we are all coming to realise is that that is an illusion - a false 'protection' from the realities of life and that what we previously saw as a crutch was, in fact, the thing that was crippling us. The fact that you're here suggests you really want to make changes, to come out from the grips of alcohol and to regain your life - as you rightly say, alcohol is killing you. If you keep drinking you know the direction of your future. If you are now able to look it squarely in the eye and say ENOUGH! - you CAN take back control and you CAN start making choices again. You're right, life can be s**t at times and it can look better from the bottom of a bottle, but you won't be able to stop this downward spiral of self-destruction until you allow yourself the opportunity to see the possibilities through a different lens. You mention loneliness - our relationship with a bottle of wine has led to loneliness for so many of us!

So, we would love to invite you to join us on this road to a new future - I can promise it won't be easy, but you won't be alone, either. There is so much inspiration and support from this site, and suggestions of how to start, where to look for additional support (AA meetings, family gp, advice about medication, holistic healing, etc, etc). Start off there - read, read, read - some advice/suggestions you'll choose to leave, others will hit you like a bolt in the dark and will make so much sense you'll wonder why you've never realised it before. We offer understanding, support, care, friendship, and an ear to listen - but YOU are the strength that will make the changes possible and a new future.

Please join us and see today as the first steps to laying the foundation for a new future.

Warmest wishes and hope very much to see you around.

      Why alcohol?

I can't say it any better than Arial did. I came to MWO feeling pretty hopeless in Apr. 07. Have I had a perfect bump-free recovery? No. But, I am on the road (as Arial says), & I see hope for long-term sobriety which is my ultimate goal. I've been going to AA meetings. Other MWO members go to other types of recovery meetings, & still others just stay here & recover through MWO. Good luck. Mary

        Addicted,

Do you find you aren't empty, lonely and miserable when you are using?

I find my brain LIES to me about that. I am so miserable when I drink that the irritation of being sober is worth it. :-)

Good luck on your journey to finding your way out. We will help in any way we can.

        Love,
        Cindi

Good responses, all... Cindi I like what you said... life is tough without alcohol but it is WAY tougher, with it! Definitely, "the irritation... is worth it"!

            Why alcohol?

Hi Addicted. Mainly just want to say welcome as I don't have much to add to the great words of wisdom spoken before me.

I'm not sure I 100% understand the mechanics of it all, but I DO know that for me, alcohol kept me in an endless loop of drunkeness and misery. I know that to be happy I HAVE to be sober.

There is hope though!! We CAN get alcohol out of our lives and things absolutely start improving after that. It's not like problems disappear, but we have a shot at managing them when we are sober.

            Best wishes to you,

            DG
