July Abbercisers - We're so HOT you can't touch dat!

Oh no Det!, you'll just have to do lots of upper body work for a while, did you hear it snap?? (sorry I have a son who skateboards and that's how we judge how serious his injuries are when he calls to report he needs another hospital trip.

KTAB - there is an element of stretching and relaxation in Yoga, but there's also a lot of weight bearing movement, and you need core stability. Depending in the style/teacher the class can be quite intense. I need to work on strengthening my arms and wrists at the minute.

Not sure what I'm going to do exercise wise today, might get the wii fit out.

    Take care

Bummer, Det! I've had that injury before -- not fun. Broke my fibula right above the ankle joint. Did you sprain it, too (hope not)? Are you in a cast?
yep, it's upper body workouts for me.
-- spoken like a true athlete! Hope it heals quickly. If it's *just* the break, the prognosis is usually very good.

Hi everyone else. I follow this thread sometimes but haven't posted here yet. 'Would like to ask you a question because you all seem very dedicated and engage in a variety of exercises/sports. How do you know when you're overtraining? I ask because I'm a month into resuming my sport (which I can't name to preserve my anonymity -- I'll just say that it's unique and competitive, burns about 700-800 calories per hour, and I do it for an hour 5-6 days per week); and I'm also doing a resistance training/cardio workout for 1.5 hours 3 x per week. Oddly, only the last few days, my leg and back muscles are particularly sore (grunting like an old person when I get up from a chair) and I find myself s-l-e-e-p-y during the day, even though I'm getting 8 hours of sleep at night, which is usually plenty for me. The only thing I can think of is that I ramped up the intensity by about 20% during the last week. Have any of you ever pushed it too far, and how much did you scale back to recover? Thanks!!!

Sorry to hear about your ankle Det what a p***er.
Betty thanks for explaining that for me.
Hi Lilbit, nice to see you here, that sounds like quite tough going. Unfortunatly I have no idea how to answer your question other than maybe listen to our bodies. Ha ha not exactly scientific but I am still trying to learn all about this exercise game.

Hi Lilbit! Boy that question is way over my head. I think I have a long way to go before I will over trained. My natural instincts run more to the "lazy." KTAB, I do what you do I guess - just try to listen to these old bones and see what they are saying besides "let's go take a nap instead." :b&d: KTAB - I think your exercise plan looks great.

Deter I am so sorry about that ankle! That sucks the big one. So are you resting today like I'm obviously resting today????? I'm too busy to rest. I can't work out but I CAN work on my submission for the Decorate Deter's Dorkboot contest.

SB I still want to get back to a try at yoga. Just haven't quite figured out where to fit it in. There are some yoga classes which I can attend free within my gym membership. Once I'm able to get back to the gym, I've been thinking all along I should check out some of the classes for those non-weight training days. You are motivating me!

IAD - that cartoon is too funny.

Well, it's :sofa: without the :b&d: for me today and for awhile. :upset: The best I will be able to do in the next few days is start walking outside but I have to be a little less wobbly than today before I try that, lest I end up like IAD's cartoon. I think this wobbly today is just due to the anasthesia (sp) so I'm sure it will pass soon.

Hey DG - nice to see you around!

Yesterday I Dog walked and had a swim. This time I managed THREE out of 15 lengths doing freestyle. I wore my HR monitor and my HR goes to the maximum recommended when I'm doing freestyle, no wonder I touch the side and collapse gasping for breath!
One advantage of having a high percentage of body fat is that I am very buoyant and can float around on my back for ages - very relaxing. It was a disadvantage though when I was learning to snorkel in a shallow pool and the instructor had to keep pushing me under as I pop back up like a cork I'll leave you with that mental picture - Happy Saturday!

Deter, I hope some swelling has gone down and the associated pain is lessening. More 'recovery' for you, I guess. So sorry to hear your situation taking you 'off the mat'. But you will recover quickly, I expect.

I have ridden 120 miles on my bike in the last 7 days - whoa, love summer. Tomorrow, my husband, who had radical surgery for prostate cancer 16 mos ago, is participating in his first triathlon ! I am so proud of his focus. Its a 'sprint triathlon', which just means shorter distances of each phase (swim 0.25-bike 13.1-run 3.1). And to support him, we also have a relay team doing the Duathlon (just run-bike-run, no swim). I am doing the bike portion, and a friend and my daughter are each running.

I have NEVER done anything like this before! I am overweight and the other side of 50 years old....but....I have been riding. I will probably be intimidated by all the athletes in their cute body attire with visible years of discipline, but I am going to do it anyway, even if I come in last. it is tomorrow morning, bright and shiney - we leave home at 5:30 AM - yuck part. I have been riding much longer distances, but the complicatedness of the transitions and the Triathlon going at the same time will make it a confusing, hyper kind of event, I think. I will report back tomorrow night.

Hi all! Nothing that could be considered exercise for me today but want to stay in touch with the Hotties none the less!

Bets congrats on THREE lengths freestyle! :yougo: You will be surprised how little by little you will be able to do more. One of the things I've been amazed about over the last year is seemingly how much stronger my heart is getting with the cardio work, and I know yours will too. The nice thing about wearing the monitor is that you can see the progress! There is just no way I could have even done what I do today one year ago without keeling over in a heart attack LOL! (and it's not like todays level is anything spectacular but it's progress!)

HG - WOW I am so excited for you and hubby! That is awesome! I can't wait to hear all about it. Sounds like a fun athletic type event but also a good cause. I pick YOU to kick some cutie booty out there on your bike. Those young 'uns will have nuthin' on you. You're a HOTTIE and don't you forget it!!

Deter where are the good lookin' nurses that are supposed to be catering to our every whim right now as we recovery, huh?? (well, we already know that Marshy is hoarding all the good looking male ones in her gym.....)

I envision myself back on at least the dread mill by no later than Tuesday of next week. For now, back to lounging out with a movie.

Hidden, how did it go?? I'm amazed you're still up after such an early start, not to mention an active day. Was it fun?

DoggyG, the recoup time really does the body a lot of good. I'm glad you're making the best of it, and hope it goes well and quickly for you. I refuse to do the "dreadmill" after falling off it once, Flying Walinda style.

Bets, good for you on your freestyling! A little different from mine (wink wink) but freestyling always feels great!

                              Hi all,

I've been away visiting family and have been a SLUG. Went for an hour's walk one day to get a break from them... erm, I mean to get some exercise. Cycled to and from work on Friday. And that's it. So back to the gym today.

KTAB - 90 lengths? No wonder you're tired!

Det - ouch! What do they DO to you in those classes? Hope it heals quickly.
