    5 days AL free

This is my first post on monthly abstinence thread. I have been a drinker for forty two years and I have decided to go AL free for 30 days. After achieving this it will be longest time dry since I was 17 years old. I passed two tests this weekend beinig at social funcitons with family. In the past I would have definately been drinking. I wanted to drink and had the urge but resisted. I feel great, slept well, emotions in check and proud to be through first weekend of this.

Thanks for the great suggestions you post on this thread. I am on it!

    :welcome: MG72

Sounds like you are off to a great start. I believe every time we don't give in to the urge for AL we are reinforcing a positive change in our brains. It is like exercise, so every time it should get easier. At first I stayed away from drinkers/drinking, but after awhile we need to learn how to live a normal life without it.

MWO is a great program. The book, the supplements, the exercise, the hypnotherapy cd's.... this forum. I really do think at least 30 days AF is the way to start.

:welcome: MG72!! Congratulations 5 AF Days! I was a daily drinker too - not many days off in a 30+ year drinking career. Definitely a big change to kick AL to the curb! Hope you will read lots and post often. Look forward to getting to know you better.

thanks to you all, I love my start to be AL

com1, leelou, suni, peacnik, goggygirl and lvt25,
Thanks so much for writing and the support you have given me. It is wonderful how good I feel after 6 days AL free. The only other time I tried to quit was three years ago. I tried to moderate and ended up in worse place. This time I am going Al free. Over the weekend I read "how to stop driniking" by Allen Carr. There were many things in the book that I found eye opening and valid. I would recommend this book to anyone that wants to get out of the vice grip of AL.

most of us here have learned the hard way that moderating just doesn't work for us!

hang in there mg72...after 40+ years this might take some doing!

It does get easier as you go along but never let your guard down - AL's a sneaky little sucker
It's time I put my big girl pants on. :grannypants: I hope they fit.

                            mg72,

I started just like you have and as many others here have. It does take determination but you can do it. I give a quick estimate that I am now at about 820 days AF. And, it gets easier over time. No magic, just living!

the beast is alive but did not win

I have made it a week AL free and it has been real. I have had several occasions where the urge was strong. This happened in situations where I would have drank before. I will stay strong and let the beast die a slow death. I understand time is on my side as long as I do not give in to the urges. I also I have to have a plan to not drink when I am in those type of situations.

Once again thanks for your encouragement and support. It means a lot to me. I wake up each day excited to read your writing and enter my zero on drink tracker.
