Weekly AA Thread - Week of Nov. 23 - 26

Over the last couple of days I listed to a speaker that I really liked - Jannis D. from Denver CO. That is one of the speakers available for free on iTunes. Just use the search feature and search for "AA Speakers" or "Alcoholics Anonymous Speakers." Thanks again for the poster who provided that tip quite some time ago!!!

DG: I'm pretty sure I've read the story you mentioned though I am going to read it again. It's important to me to read stories like that, as I was a "high bottom." When I hear or read about a lower bottom alcoholic, I can easily delude myself into thinking: "Well, maybe I'm not an alcoholic after all." Now that I've gotten a little distance from my drinking, I can see just how unmanageable my life had become. Sunday was my day to drink. I'd be well under way at this point. Why? I couldn't even begin to understand except that the addiction had taken hold, & I couldn't spend a football Sunday wo/drinking. Mary

Weekly AA Thread - Week of Nov. 23 - 26

Greetings all. I am away in Kansas attending my 40th high school reunion. Made it through two nights AF...not as tough as I imagined it would be.
Now I see what I put my wife through for many years, drunk people are not that much fun when you are sober.
        Back to Texas tomorrow.

Mary, I can relate to the Sunday thing. While I always managed to drink EVERY day, Sunday was a complete free for all most of the time as it was the one day where I didn't have anything holding me back - making me "wait" to get started until later, etc. I realized a while back also that the answer to the "why" of my drinking, certainly in the later years, was simply "because I am addicted to it." It really had nothing to do with the excuses I made up.

Phil, good to hear from you as always. Congrats on getting through the reunion and also for recognizing what things look like from the "other side." I haven't gone to any of my HS reunions. But I remember a time when I was back in my home town - already very active in my own alcoholism, but not having recognized that. I kept running across a guy I went to high school with who apparently got "blotto" in one of the local bars every single night. Needless to say, my judgement of him was fast and harsh. Little did I realize how much we had in common. I hope somehow he has survived and gotten sober too.

I enjoyed the holiday and I didn't feel the pull of AL at all really this year like I did last year. But I'm sort of glad it's over and glad to be getting back to a normal week this week. Not sure what that means other than I really like my simple and mundane little life and routine! I guess that's OK.

One of my sponsees officially did Step 3 yesterday although she has really embraced the program and has already been "living it" and getting the benefits! She is having back surgery tomorrow so this was a nice milestone for her to reach in her program before a significant event and recovery period. I am experiencing a lot of joy and benefit from working with her. I will be getting advice from Sister today about whether I should proceed with her on to step 4 or help her find a more experienced sponsor to move forward with. I'm off to the early morning Monday AA meeting next!

          Strength and hope,

          DG
