    Everyones posts here have helped

I have been trying to quit drinking for what seems like forever now. I'll get a day or two in...and then have a rather bad night. Last night was one of them. To be honest I am not AF tonight. Around 6pm....my skin started to crawl and I was starting to shake. Now I am taking my "AL medicine" to get me out of that hell feeling.

This would be my usual pattern....drink too much....drink a little the next day to stop the pain...then not drink for a few days. And no, I am not kidding myself that I can mod...that is a joke for me.

Any advice on staying sober is welcome. I have been going back to AA...however, the topics seem to hit so close to home...that they rock my world. I may stay sober that day, but not the next.

For instance..."honesty" was the topic. I walked out of that meeting in tears. I have to stop lying to myself. I say that I am not hurting my family...when they have already told me I am. Looking at yourself as if someone put a black light on you and you see where the crap is....stirs up so much emotional stuff for me.

    Thanks for letting me post.

Life, Sheri has given you some good info to get started. It is certainly overwhelming at first, but well worth the struggles. Don't give up AA too quick, it can be such a great help.
    Wishing you the best.

Hey life, Welcome and I hope you read through the threads on the supplements and meds. If you feel comfortable ask your Dr. for support. I did see my Dr. and spoke candidly about my drinking. I did get a rx for topamax that is helping me. I do take a low dose only 50mg a day. With the supps I rarely have any cravings. So post often ask questions. I wish you luck. Hope to hear lots more from you life!

Hi Liferocks, and thanks for your honest post.
I can feel your pain, but unlike you I think this is a good sign. The pain is real, and something you need to feel to begin to heal, instead of using AL to cover it up.

Sometimes when the desire to numb out with AL comes over you, try to survive for just one minute without drinking, then another minute, then 10 minutes. Rest, put some great music on to lift your mood. Before you know it the desire has eased. You can build on this one minute at a time, one day at a time.

Your doing great, keep going and never give up.
        Good luck

Hi LifeRocks. I hope you come back! I can understand your pain as can most everyone here. I can identify with your description of drinking, and also of the pain that came from the dishonesty and everything else that came along with drinking for me. There is hope!

I started out with the My Way Out plan described in the book (and supplements, CD's bought here) with the exception of Topomax. I also started going to AA and have found it very helpful in clearing the wreckage of my past and building a meaningful sober life.

You will find that lots of people here have found their own way to sobriety that works for them. Don't give up! You can find your way too. It's not easy but it's worth it.
