AF Daily - Wednesday November 24

Back atcha on the Turkey Day humor, Choochie! I call this, "Shut up and eat."

My kids are having dinner with their Dad and his family this year (lucky them--Grandma E.'s sugar-free pies and salt-free sides. (Okay, will cease former-in-law cattiness in honor of holiday. But it's so HARD :dunno.

Sean's 3 kids will all be here for dinner (two are in college and flying/driving in today) along with another couple and their daughter. I stopped going to my own family's Thanksgiving 10 years ago because it looked a lot like this (that would be me passed out in the mashed potatoes):

In all seriousness (and that is also very hard for me!), I'm very thankful for this scrappy, big-hearted MWO community this holiday season. I will raise a glass of cranberry juice in your honor tomorrow. (All you WWs--no counting points! It's a holiday for crissakes!) :l

Off I go--flowers to buy, potatoes to peel, and miles to go before I sleep.

    Love,

    Pride

Oh my the humor is just flowing and I love it!! We are all becoming so strong and really getting into setting boundaries! How wonderful!!
I am not at all worried about tomorrow like I was a week ago. We're being let go at 3 so I will head to Trader Joe's after the library and pick up an extra special AF drink to bring with me tomorrow. I am very lucky in that my family will not pressure me to drink. It will be so nice to be able to drive home and not worry at all about roadblocks or accidents. Now I'm getting excited!!
I'll check in later tonite and give everyone a last holiday wish.

          Could not Resist....

          Dear Family and Friends:

I know that you were eager to accept our family's invitation to Thanksgiving dinner when you found out that the famous Martha Stewart would be joining us. However, due to scheduling conflicts beyond her control, Ms. Stewart finds that she is unable to grace our table this year. With that in mind, there will be a few minor changes regarding the meal and decor, as outlined below. Please be aware of them, and adjust your appetite and dress appropriately.

          Thank you

          1) Our driveway will not be lined with homemade, paper bag luminaries. After several trial runs and two visits from the fire department, it was decided that, no matter how cleverly done, rows of flaming lunch sacks do not have the desired welcoming effect.

          2) Once inside, please note that the entry space will not be decorated with swags of Indian corn and fall foliage. Instead, we included our dog in decorating by having him track in colorful autumn leaves from the back yard. The mud was his idea.

          3) The dining table will not be covered with expensive linens, fancy china, or crystal goblets. If possible, we will use dishes that match and everyone will get a fork. Since this is Thanksgiving, we will refrain from using the paper SpongeBob dinner plates, the leftover Halloween napkins, and our plastic cup collection.

          4) Our centerpiece will not be a tower of fresh fruit and flowers. Instead we will be proudly displaying a hedgehog-like decoration hand-crafted from the finest construction paper and pine cones. The artist assures me it is a turkey, albeit one without wings, legs, or a beak.

          5) We will be dining somewhat later than planned. However, our daughter will entertain you while you wait. I'm sure she will be happy to share every choice comment her mother made regarding Thanksgiving, pilgrims, stuffing choices, the turkey hotline, and, especially, her husband. Please remember that most of these comments were made at 7:00AM upon discovering that said husband had only remembered to pull the turkey from the freezer at 6:00 AM, and that the thing was still hard enough to cut diamonds.

          6) As an accompaniment to our daughter's recital of these events, I will play a recording of Native American tribal drumming. Curiously, the tribal drumming sounds a great deal like a frozen turkey in a clothes dryer, but that only enhances the holiday appropriateness. If our daughter should mention that we don't own a recording of Native American tribal drumming, ignore her. She's only nine; what does she know?

          7) A dainty silver bell will not be rung to announce the start of our feast. We have chosen to keep our traditional method of assembling when the smoke alarm goes off.

          8) There will be no formal seating arrangement. When the smoke alarm sounds, please gather around the table and sit where you like. In the spirit of harmony, we will ask all the children to sit at a separate table. In a separate room. Next door. And I would like to take this opportunity to remind our younger diners that "passing the rolls" is neither a football play nor an excuse to bean your cousin in the head with bread.

          9) The turkey will not be carved at the table. I know you have seen the Norman Rockwell image of one person carving a turkey in front of a crowd of appreciative onlookers. Such a scene may occur somewhere in America, but it won't be happening at our dinner table. For safety reasons, the turkey will be carved in the kitchen at a private ceremony. I stress "private", meaning Do not, under any circumstances, enter the kitchen to laugh at me. Do not send small, unsuspecting children, or older, helpful grandparents into the kitchen to check on my progress. I have a very large, very sharp knife. The turkey is unarmed. It stands to reason that I will eventually win the battle. When I do, we will eat.

          10) For the duration of the meal, we will refer to the gravy by its lesser-known name: Kraft Cheese Sauce. If a young diner questions you regarding the origins or makeup of the Kraft Cheese Sauce, smile kindly and say that you know the answer, but it's a secret that can't be revealed to them until they are 18.

          11) Instead of offering a choice among 12 different scrumptious desserts, we will be serving the traditional pumpkin pie, garnished with whipped cream and dog tongue marks. You still have a choice: take it or leave it.

That concludes our list of alterations. Again, I apologize that Martha will not be joining us this year. Come to think of it, she probably won't come next year, either.

          HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!

            Top of the Wednesday ABerooooos!

birthday spankings are in order for Papmom and Cindi. wooooo! hope the birthday chef brings you lots of garlicky goodness.

in continuation from yesterdays nutrition talk:

yes veggies do indeed have protein although sadly in many cases it can't be metabolized by the human digestive system. broccoli for example has 40% protein by weight but the human body will not synthesize one bit of protein from it as it's biologically impossible.
Beans contain better protein delivery system but to get my dietary protein requirements from soy beans I'd have to consume 6.4 cups of cooked soy beans daily. I just couldn't do it. (and Dx wouldn't want me to try!)
I think it's possible to be vegetarian and be healthy but it takes a huge amount of nutritional knowledge and a good deal of $ in nutritional supplements to get the missing nutrients such as L Carnitine.

            to your health!

i eat raw olive oil, coconut oil, grapeseed oil and nuts (wish i could eat avo's, but i'm allergic!).

trust me, i aint afraid of no fat (unless it's animal fat!).

Thanks AFM! I sometimes have to check what I'm typing so I don't use your real name..lol. I don't think I can change it back? Plus, I had them remove all my posts from years gone back and that might really annoy them..just keep calling me Gia, I have to check as well when I see BB that it is me and not Betty.

Det, you might like John Durant at hunter-gather.com. He's a big proponent of a pre-agro revolution diet (check out his link to the PaNu blog):

Raven, I used to be a big proponent of spirulina until more medical research transpired to show that many aminos and most critically the abundant vitamin B12 in spirulina are not bio-available to the human digestive system.

if you want a non-meat form of protein with a huge array of medical benefits that also affordable and easily digested with the full compliment of all aminos then look no further than........

                      drumroll please.....

whey protein powder. seriously. available at a walmart near you.

I like the unflavored unsweetened whey protein from Jarrow Formulations myself.

Thanks for the link Pride. will check it out

Evening all - just back from skating and now in PJs with a decaf coffee - and a few chunks of chocolate. It's cold here today - frost and snow are expected. Long journey ahead at the weekend - hope it's ok.

Af and NF - happy that way - VERY tired this week. Pay day tomorrow thankfully - I've spent lots this month. Not much to say - except for I want a thanksgiving dinner - I LOVE roast turkey it's my absolute favourite!

Off to try and read through my AF books again - I need inspiration!

                            Hey All!

Hope everyone is ready for a big Turkey day tomorrow. I will be smoking a turkey tomorrow. My only problem is that I am having a hard time finding cigarette rolling paper large enough?.. Ok, that was really a poor stab at humor! But I seriously slow smoke turkeys on T-giving day. I have this thing called a Big Green Egg that I use to smoke meat. I make pretty mean BBQ and ribs as well. Mrs. IMJ has to work tomorrow (why can?t people plan their pregnancies better so that nurses do not have to work on holidays!) so I will be manning the kitchen.

It is in the high 50?s here in God?s country. I wish it was colder. I have a big stack of fire wood just waiting on a cozy fire.

Happy Birthday Pap! How?s the personal training going? I tried using a PT a couple of years ago and totally hated it. Not that he was just working me hard but to the point that it was not enjoyable and I actually dreaded going. One morning he worked me to the point of throwing up. When I got to my office I closed the door, transferred my phone to voice mail and pretty much stayed in a daze all day. I finally quit going to meet him. The asshole started calling my cell to try to talk me into coming back. I went to the gym this morning. Now a days I run and really enjoy that. I?m down 6 pounds so I must be doing something right without pushing myself to the point of collapsing?.

So today I am 40 days AF. For some reason I am really struggling this evening. I would love to have one drink. I know for fact that whatever I tell myself that I wouldn?t stop at one and I really don?t want to waste my day tomorrow hung over. I had to buy a bottle of white wine today for part of the turkey recipe. I am not a wine person but I can see myself having a glass. I am not going to do that either. Fortunately the Antibuse will keep me from doing a taste test during cooking!

Tomorrow it will be me and the boys. I have a radio controlled helicopter that we may spend the day with. Then when Mrs. IMJ gets home will have a major food throw-down. I love quite holidays. Christmas will be quite different though!

Not meaning to be sappy but I wanted to take a minute to recognize that I really have a lot to be thankful for this holiday season. I have a wonderful family, a lovely spouse that keeps me in line most of the time. I have my health. I have four dogs (Brittany Spaniels) that I am thankful for some of the time. I have two Bats (sugar gliders if you have not seen my previous rants) that I AM NOT thankful for in any way or fashion. (wonder what smoked sugar gliders taste like?maybe like chicken?) Finally I am thankful that I found this thread and met such wonderful and caring people; folks that I look forward to reading what is on their minds and reaching out to them when I need some support. Believe it or not, every person on this thread has made a difference in my life.

Ok, now that the mushy stuff is out of the way, I will end this post with another famous IMJ?s thought of the day?If the Jacksonville Jaguars are known as the "Jags", and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are known as the "Bucs", what does that make the Tennessee Titans?

Have a fun and safe holiday all!

DG, Thanks for the start today. Here's my plan for Turkey Day.

90 minute yoga class at 8:00 am.

Movie with family (probably "Tangled") and neighbors

TG dinner at a restauraunt (because we don't have a kitchen)

                              Catch up on some reading

                              Happy Thanksgiving All.
