All of you are on my gratitude list today!

AFM, so glad things went well for your Dad.

My baby brother has been around me since I stopped drinking, but it's been in large family gatherings so we hadn't ever discussed my alcoholism or the fact that I don't drink at all any more. He brought a bottle of wine and I declined by saying I don't drink any more. My Dad, who I HAVE told that I'm an alcoholic and therefore don't / can't drink any more said "DG has cut back." I said "no, I don't drink any more." Then my Dad said something else really strange. It is truly amazing how people really do not understand alcoholism. (P3, I'm with you on that soap box hoping for opportunities to educate people about it) Anyway...it was lovely to watch the others except me and Mr. Doggy sip their wine. Between 4 of them, that bottle lasted for hours. There was still some wine in a couple of the glasses when everyone left.

Geez. One bottle of wine would not have been enough for me by myself! I have never drank like these people. I am very glad that I had no desire to drink today. I know I cannot drink normally like them. One small glass and I would have been craving more. WAY more.

It was a really nice afternoon. I like my brother's GF. They have been dating for several years now. They have a lot in common and just chill well together.

Onward for the rest of this holiday season. I will still be glad when it's over.

                  One thing is for sure..

AF Daily-Thursday November 25, 2010-Happy Thanksgiving no matter where you are!!

                    Evening all,

That's great news, AFM! I'm so happy for you.

Happy Turkey Day, all Americans. DG, it's impressive how you're just taking whatever comments in your stride and not letting them get in the way of enjoying your family gathering. People often don't get it, but it can also be that they don't want an open acknowledgement/airing of 'the problem' and prefer a fudge.

Papmom, thanks for the picture. I'm definitely moving towards more action these days, and also persuading myself that action begets action.

I gave my speech today. The first thing of note is that I did it! The second thing is that most of it was pretty good. Since I'm not in the habit, I couldn't quite judge how long it would be. I thought I only had a few things to say but ended up running longer than expected. So the last bit was not as polished as it could have been. I'd give myself about a B. The perfectionist-me would like to drown her sorrows in you know where. The 'work in progress'-me will accept this as a learning experience to build on next time. And promptly hit the sack. Sweet dreams!

AF Daily-Thursday November 25, 2010-Happy Thanksgiving no matter where you are!!

Lovely day today. Took all 3 pups for about an hour long walk around my neighborhood and surrounding ones, worked out in the yard for a bit getting some things put away and up (birdfeeders, part of a bamboo fence my neighbor gave me etc) and then got ready to go to Sis's. Great time. Wonderful to see my aunt again and she looks fabulous for 87!! I'm not sure why my dad said she had quit drinking because she was not holding back tonite! maybe it was a temporary thing until her bloodwork came back normal. Oh well, at 87 I guess she can do whatever she wants!! Everyone, even the teen nephews were imbibing tonite (they were allowed one beer each before dinner). I brought Sparkling Cranberry Juice and Pom/blueberry Green tea from Trader Joe's. Combined them together with lots of ice and DELISH!! Even my SIL and Aunt had a glass before they started on the wine. My sister bought Spiced Cranberry Juice from TJs for me and again I combined that with the greentea for dinner. Very nice! I didn't miss the wine at all and I didn't feel a bit deprived!! I did notice that instead of coffee for dessert my sis kept drinking wine. Boy is that familiar!! However the difference was that instead of big bottles of red and white only small bottles were opened. A couple of each but that sure was better than a couple of big bottles each color which we always went through in the past. We took a nice walk around her neighborhood after dinner and before dessert. Crisp temps were wonderful!! We had a nice birthday celebration for all the girls too. I'm all outfitted for Planet Fitness and for walking the dogs in the winter weather plus another 6 weeks of agility AND a color/cut (it's been almost 3 months since I last had my hair cut!)!! My family is sooooo generous! At dinner we went around the table and said what we were thankful for. I was really impressed with what the kids said. No smart remarks just really nice thoughtful statements-even from the 5 yo!!
Home now and ready to dig into some apple pie! Busy days ahead but all good stuff.
I am so grateful to be AF these days and can't believe I ever questioned what was so great about it!

DG-so glad you had a nice get together too. What did your dad say that was so strange? Yes, I will be glad when this season is over and the new year starts but since we have to get through it, I intend to do so with as much spirit as possible. In fact, I'm thinking seriously of getting all my decorations down from the attic tomorrow. I may not put them up yet as I have massive cleaning to do but they'll be down and a reminder every day.

Pam-congrats on your speech! Being a public speaking a phobic, I have nothing but respect and admiration for you!

IJM-wow! that turkey sure looked awesome! I could almost smell it through the laptop!!

Have a great nite/day everyone! See you in the morning!!
