It was my girlfriend's birthday yesterday and we went out for dinner with four of her friends. So there were six of us - five drinking, me not drinking. And it was great. Had lots of laughs and really nice food. I genuinely didn't want any alcohol. I know lots of lurkers read this thread and I see people elsewhere asking if it's possible to get to point where you really don't want to drink and I just wanted to emphasis that yes it is! I was meeting a few people I didn't know (there were drinks with more people in the bar before dinner) and was a bit nervous because I want to make a good impression with her friends but it didn't even cross my mind to have a drink.
Oh, and we split the bill at the end and a couple of people insisted that I paid less than everyone else because I hadn't had any wine or cocktails - and that was a nice side benefit and covered the cost of a cab home! And waking up with a clear head today... priceless!
I'm not complacent about this - I still put the work in but it really does pay off.
DG - XNGF knows all about the popcorn-eating voyeurs and thinks it's very funny.
BB - we're going to the Ardeche, about an hour's drive from Nimes airport. Do you know it? I've been to France many times (always had summer holidays there when I was a kid) but never been to that part.
Papmom - yes, we're going to NYC/CT in April (from 13th to 20th). I didn't want to start a whole "NYC meet-up" thread and be responsible for organising a round-up but if there's an opportunity to meet few people, that would be great.
Au revoir everyone - see you in a week or so - be good!
