Can some of you guys pm me your addressess for mail? I can mail letters when I'm there and would like to be able to send some progress reports to you guys. If you are not comfortable with it I understand, I'm thinking some of my oldtimer friends from here? DG, Det, Greeny?

Didn't realize I was so tired until I sat down........now I don't want to get up!
Chasing EB for 3 days wore me out I think

Uni, I wish you the best, hope you are able to get what you need from the program!

M3, that educational counselor I found for my son cost me a small fortune but I would do it all over again!!! I figured I could use the money in an attempt to get him the help he needed or I could use the same money to bail his butt out of jail some day. He was a good kid with a good heart deep down but his erratic behavior hid all that. He ended doing well in high school, graduated from Penn State, went directly into the Fire academy in washington DC & is now working his dream job - firefighter/paramedic. I think he plans to be Chief down there some day :H He is also finishing up a second degree at George Washington University. That counselor, years ago, managed to get him to direct his excess energy into worthwhile activities & he's still doing that

Jenny, just don't ever give up on your son no matter how frustrating it gets.
My girl friend got fed up with her son & now the young man is sitting in jail

I watch my grandson & wonder if he's going to run into difficulties some day too. I'm pretty damn sure our son inherited it from his Dad........

Great discussions today, it is so valuable. I have two daughters, both diagnosed with ADHD. The first had to be held back a grade and was really struggling - I eventually broke down and started meds. It wa sone of teh hardest decisions I have ever made, but the difference is huge, and the days that she does not take, the difference is enormous. I tried other avenues first, but nothing has had the effect that meds have. She decided to stop a little while ago and I decided to let her, and she came back begging to go back on - she just could not manage at school at all, and was having huge friend issues - not good for a young girl. She is on concerta which is once a day, and that is great as the school nurse is not involved and none of her friends know about it. and YAH - the generics are out - luckily I have insurance, but my deductible is $15 instead of $50! My younger girl was also diagnosed, and she is managing without meds. She is doing well in school and managing with friends (as well as any 10year old gorl does - oh my, young girls can be evil!). So I totally agree, there is not one rule for any child and as responsible parents we have to find the best solution that we can in the circumstances we are given.
One other point - the state of our education system does not help - the class sizes are just way too big, the kids who struggle just get neglected, or labelled as trouble makers. One teacher to 40 young kids does not make for a good educational enviroment - the poor teachers are up against a wall with no help! My oldest may just have managed better if she got a bit more time in the class, but her social skills were not helping with relationships. Also the larger class sizes means the kids are crammed into class rooms way to small and there is no room to wiggle or fidget, and as we all know these kids HAVE to move. There isn't even enough room for them to get up and walk around - does not help at all.
Happy BD MOMof 3, and happy Monday everyone else!

Happy Birthday Mom3! Sorry I am a bit late today. Bi&^%$ of a day. Wrote a long message on here all about it, and poof! Short story....b&tch of a day, lol! Survived in one "peace" though. Universal, I dont know you very well, but I wish you the best in your quest. Can you keep a journal there? And as for the discussion of ADHD and ADD, I would have been diagnosed with either or both. Was dyslexic, disruptive, (emotive, lets say) a figgiter, distonic (speech issues), etc. Went on to get a decent bachelors and a good masters degree. I believe that North American Elementary and Secondary schools are not a reliable estimate of a childs potential for success or future contributions to society. THey are very often a better measure of how well a child can conform to a standard established by particular group of educators, and how completely they can blend into thier peer group. They are not set up to to foster individualism or to reveal any one childs particular unique abilities, unless that child has a great deal of charisma or has a group of very observant, talented, kind and dedicated teachers. Of which there are many. My own kids? One did well the other not. The one who did well is determined to be a teacher. The one who did not so well is on welfare with two little kids, and no grade 12 and not much of a future. I dont know what the answer is but what ever it takes to keep kids engaged and happy...is worth it. I wish I had known my eldest was being bullied, and that she developed a drug and AL problem in Grade 8..... sober now, but its been a long haul for her.

Again Happy Birthday M3, hoping everyone had a good day AF. kaslo
