AF Daily - Tuesday, March 27

    Good morning, party people,

I don’t know about you but I am a bit tired after Lav’s party … and ate too much cake. Despite dancing at a virtual party the feelings of happiness and joy were real and it is amazing what an uplifting experience this was.

Get yer mugs, I brewed a mean pot of French roast and a special cup of decaf with a little sprinkle of luck for Sugar.

Honey, job hunting is depressing enough these days even for “normal” people. Even when the times were good in Ireland, job interviews are stressful and awkward and leave you hanging in expectation for days … or weeks. It is what it is … But keep that glimmer of hope in your heart and know that we are all rooting for you. If you put your mind to it YOU can do ANYTHING !!!!

I was a bit down yesterday (PMS, damn those hormones, they can drag me from Heavens to Hades in minutes) so I self medicated with the only sure cure I know (advil and new shoes ... the advil wears off after a while but the shoes stay on fortunately). They are a nice shade of beigey pink .. or mabye pale lavande … see? Cannot get you out of my mind.

Have a super day everyone, I need to get my workaholic mode back on …

Good morning all to pop in here on this NO boozeday Tuesday!

Shue- great words for Sugar. Your new shoes sound fab!
Sugar, I'd also like to add , that job searching is no picnic in the USA either. We've moved and I've had to start over several times. I think you should (try) to look at it like a game. Change that mindset to "well why wouldn't they want me?!" You are in a much better af mindset these days and it will only get better. I am big on always sending a personal thank you note afterward too. Keep plugging along. It WILL happen.

Good to "see" you popping in Mum!!!

Off to pour some of Shue's coffee and do some lurking. So glad to be on day 35.

Lav- your big day really inspired me!

        Mornin' Peeps!

(Pouring myself a good cup of coffee with extra good luck sugar...)

Shue, PMS sucks...love the self shoe shopping therapy...I'll have to shoot for that next time it hits me...lol!

One more day left in my work week than I am off for 2 glorious days! No particular plans but my usual get stuff done around the house, catch up on here and work out. Get some good walks done with the dog. It's been damn windy all night and still into this morning...will be a chilly walk to work today. Best to bundle up. Sunny though, and that's half the battle. Hope you all enjoy a lovely day!

Celebrating my 35th day with AlmostFamous! I know I'm in good company! How is everyone else doing?
Whatever you invest in the circle of LIFE is what comes back to you. Multiplied. What you give to people is what they eventually give back to you. Don't do the math. Just increase your LOVE.

        BE HAPPY...BE CONNECTED...BE HEALTHY!

          Good morning, All!
About 30 degrees colder than last week at this time, but sun is shining!
Shure need the French Roast today, Shue! That was some party, Lav! Hope you enjoyed your day!
Shue, can we maybe get a pic of the new shoes????
M2 and Almost, good to see you both! 35 days, Almost--that's terrific!
Going for a more positive day, today. Yesterday was not so good and had trouble chasing away the negative thoughts. Had a call from a former colleague asking if i'd be interested in a job selling pet food. Didn't feel like telling her about my inability to drive, but thinking about the money, the contact with former customers--well, it wasn't so easy to let go of. I seem unable to even get a part time job. Age and DUI--doesn't matter that I am capable and want to work. I know what Sugar is going through, although thank goodness she doesn't have a DUI or the age thing.
Must get all my stuff together for the taxes. I have put it off for too long and have to do it today:sigh: Will then start tutorials on lynda.com to see what I can learn about webistes and blogs. this is for the flower shop, but I am thinking about creating a blog on all things dog! My 12 yr old niece has a blog on fashion for girls, so I figure I can try one for something I know a lot about. Also have to call the local doctor who works without insurance. Another thing I have been putting off.
Won't go anywhere until the gym. Not sure what I can do with the foot, but can surely do something more than sit in my chair:H
Oh--Sunni and LVT have shared their Facebook page with me through PM (well, LVT, not sure i got the right person, so let me know if you got a friend request!) I got to see the most lovely Sunni and her beautiful family--two and four legged, of course! This is such a fun thing. I need to go and add some pics, as i have not done much with that. Anybody else want to join us????
I'll be checking in a lot today. Hope all of you to come have a FAB AF day!!

Good morning Abinster Fabbeys, may the gothic pinnacles and buttresses of sobriety keep you solidly healthy and well.

I was thinking Sugarbeat got short shrift yesterday and her question was insufficiently answered and here I am Pacific Standard Time as usual, way behind all of you. But that doesnt prevent me from saying..... YOU are fantastic, all those other mofos (excuse my French) who dont hire you right away are not. SO many young people including myself, back in the day, did not have the sense to realize i needed to not kill myself with booze, and make a solid effort to stop already, like you, Sugar, have done. And as a CEO, (ok, also the janitor, but wtf) I hired many, and I have to steel myself and be as kind as possible when I have to tell the disqualified individuals they didnt make it. (I then try to get them a position somewhere...)

Job hunting is dicouraging, self-effacing, alienating, scary and time consuming. It takes a lot of energy, which under your circs, is hard to direct away from healing. And also other peoples opinons, what they say etc can really bite a job seeker where they are most vulnerable, which is right in the tender juicy self esteem, (around the arse somewhere)... It MAY help if you can learn as much as possible about the company/position you are applying for and turn the interview a bit into you asking questions, saying a few positive things, ideas you might have. Always dress nicely NO matter what the job is, not too flashy but pleasant. Try to be calm and mildly friendly, think a few seconds before you answer a question, try to figure out what they are going to ask you and dont be afraid to ask for a clarification, and if you dont know the answer say how you would find out what the answer is. THat last bit is very important.

Getting an interview if you are not getting them, send an email, a short one. Make a phone call, say if you are not hiring right now thats fine but youd like to come by and meet person X, just to say hello, and bring a cv.

Your cv or resume or what ever you call those things in Ireland..... Make one FOR each JOB type. Dont put totally irrelevant experience on them. Its fair to have as many cvs as there are stones on a rocky beach. DONT lie on your cv, and make sure your references are going to say good things about you.

If you need more help, TDN also, please dont hesitate to send me a PM. As for the drinking part of it, THAT information is completely private and has nothing to do with the job application or your personal future. It was a private issue, only in the past. You dont even need to mention it or discuss it. If any job interveiwee every mentions it or asks about it, if they personally know about it, be honest, but brief and say, I had an issue, Ive since recovered, I dont drink. The phrase "I dont drink" can be all you ever need to say to anyone in a job interview or job search situation and then ZIP IT.

Believe me talking too much is really a liability in a job interview or interface with a potential boss / supervisor / what have you. Its better to ask questions simply, answer questions simply, and then at the end, ask a few friendly postive questions, make your best impression with your clear eyed, pleasant, intelligent self who actually KNOWS something about the job and is INTERESTED in it. Us bosses really hate interviewing people who have no clue, dont take the time to research it, dont really care, have too many "problems" are negative, talk too much, etc.

Oh and by the way, unless we are talking about a job at Hooters, god forbid jobs like that have to even exist, for fecks sake, its not that one is too old. Unless you are in an aluminum walker with white hair and are noticeably over 70, or are completely NOT fit, the age doesnt matter that much, its the experience, personality, knowledge, and demenour that matter.

I could write volumes about this, 32 years of running a science consulting company that has had maybe 50 people come through on over 20 projects a year, and almost every one of those people can come back to me for ideas and advice and often do. I curently have a staff of 3 people, and i currently need a plant ecologist with real knowledge of semi aquatic wetland vegetation, sampling proceedures, data entry and statistics. They have to have a B.Sc. or simply know the plants. I would hire a garage mechanic for the job, if they could look at a juvenile Polygonum aciculare and get it right, BUT then they would have to look me calmly in the eye and ask a few gentle questions about the companys past work, and NOT about what benefits packages we have etc etc. and then launch into a discussion of thier cats hair ball problem. Those questions and that discussion of hair balls are reserved for the end of a short list second interview. And re hair balls, probably not at all.

I sincerely hope this helps, and for a 3rd time, please dont hesitate if you want some more advice on your cv.

                        Good morning Fabberoonies!

Oops. Never mind, it's afternoon again. Sigh.
Kaslo, of the future employee hand book made some great points! I will continue to keep my fingers tied in a knot for both of ya, TDN and Sugar. And what's wrong with Hooters for the over 70 crowd? Maybe not such a bad idea. Have you SEEN some of the small town strip clubs... errrmm... performers? :H

Anywho.. quick check in from over here... really missing that gorgeous weather from last week. They're talking flurries, freezing rain, and/or ice pellets this afternoon. Yuck. That takes care of my lesson today... I ain't hauling horses around in that. So, back to work it is, then.

Have a fabby AF day, boyz 'n gurlz!

Shue - what a great pair of shoes to use as a pick-me-up on a blah day.

Kaslo - you sound like my recruiter friends! LOL. Good advice and very true! Although I like Sunshine GG's "Hooters for the over 70 crowd" idea. :H

Sounds like everyone is off to a busy and productive day. I'm off on a business trip tomorrow and I will be on Pacific Standard time for a few days - so I'll be posting with the "late folks" on those days. LOL. Hope everyone has a great AF day!

Hi everyone ( long day at work! ) very tired, not had chance to really read the thread properly but I couldn't help noticing Shue's new shoes - they are great.

Must go and get something to eat, however those shoes got me thinking....... I've saved a lot of money over the last (almost 5 ) weeks by not drinking alcohol, so I think I'll treat myself to some shoes or an item of clothing as a reward with the money I've saved!

Have a good AF day everyone.

Have I told ya'll lately how much I love this place? Your support and friendship is an amazing gift every day. Grazie, FABulous ones!

Keep plugging away, sweet Sugar and TDN. Good things happen when you're expecting them to. And good things happen when you persist!

Kas, your advice ALMOST made me want to go out and look for a steady job. Sometimes I do fantasize about giving up the vagaries of working from gig to gig and if I decide to (or HAVE to) do that, I'll have Kas' Secrets to Making a Great First Impression. Are pug hairballs also verboten?

Sausage - I am an ardent advocate of rewarding oneself for AF milestones. When I quit, I actually set up a special online savings account and every day I transferred the money I would've spent on smokes and drink. I had a $22 dollar a day habit. So far...I have not wasted $5,456 ($22 x 248 days.) That ain't chicken feed. Unless you feed your chickens gold nuggets.

I use that money now for good....for my family...my community...and for me....too! I am saving for a down payment on some land in a place where the snow isn't 5 feet high in March where I can have 1 goat and 5 chickens. Maybe I will mix some gold in their feed....just so I can have a chicken that shits gold bricks! lol

I'm in for the facebook exchange. It's a great idea for getting to know everyone more. I have to admit that I am not a real active poster on FB. And, I obviously don't talk directly about MWO - most people would be shocked to know I was addicted to alcohol! Still - I think it's a great tool for connecting faces to our cyber friends. I must've missed the plan....TDN I'll send you my info and maybe you can fill me in on who's doing what?

wishing a great rest of the day for all who have been and those yet to come...

Shue....that's some lovely footwear you've acquired! You deserve it! Here's a pic of the new river hiking shoes I am waiting for. They cost just under 4 days of smoking and drinking:
