AF Daily - Friday March 30
Kas - you are sure getting a lot of good input about your new companion. We are really quite the dog loving bunch here. I would have a herd if I could, but my hood limits us to just two. I am just finishing a marvelous book by the late Caroline Knapp - Pack of Two. It's a thoughtful celebration about the wonder of the relationship with have with this other species. She also wrote, Drinking: A Love Story about her relationship with and recovery from alcoholism.
It is a heart-scarring event to suffer the untimely loss of a precious pet - perhaps even more so when there is trauma involved. We almost just lost a pug last week! There is a new gated community near our hood where a drunk driver took out one of the gates. There are only 4 houses back there and no one is there in the winter (they're too rich, I suppose) so it's great for letting the dogs off leash. The pugs love running free there. It wasn't a problem until last Saturday when all of a sudden an EAGLE just swooped over us from out of the blue - literally. There was a lot of crazy at that point. I'm screaming the dogs' recall word hysterically - COOKIE! COOKIE! COOKIE! and running toward them while they were running toward me as I was flailing my arms wildly thinking it would scare the eagle. The Eagle swooped back up and did a few more fly bys which scared us more because they have been known to pluck little dogs right out of the arms of their owners. The pugs, bless their little curly tails, were not the least bit bothered! It was just good fun for them.
When making a choice of the head in finding a new member of the family, I am a big believer in matching the breed with the lifestyle if possible. I once had a sled dog who really just wasn't cut out for urban living. While I ran her almost every day and took her ski-joring in the winter where she could really open up the speed, it still wasn't enough for what she was born to do - RUN! It made me feel bad up until the day she died at the ripe old age of 15.
Because my husband is just a few years away from retirement and wants to travel extensively, we opted to go for smaller dogs and from my research and talking with other owners, we knew pugs would work for us. They are genetically predisposed to be people pleasers - that's been their job for centuries. They are exceptionally affectionate and great little entertainers. They're happy just to hang with you. And they are just darn cute and melt your heart when they cock their head and gaze at you with their little googly-eyed, smooshed up faces.
Kas - your heart really is ready....we'll be anxious to see who you choose to add to your family - and by extension....OUR family here (don't count on us to pick up any nuggets, though!)
Today on break, I am taking Puck da Pug for a R-I-D-E to get my weekly low-fat coconut milk, decaf Latte from the drive through coffee place where the owner showers puck with beef jerky treats and pets. He makes the most pathetic, but cute squeals of joy once the little hut comes into view!
EGGsperiment Update:
I dutifully went to the man cave for my mini 1 hour cleaning session yesterday and managed to stay there until the phone rang. Then it was dinner time. I probably got a good half-hour in and a nice little lesson on learning to be a little less rigid in my thinking. That egg is going back into the bowl, though!
Today, I drew: 1 box basement.
Done!
Going back for another egg this afternoon once work duties are done.Sober for the Revolution!

Good morning Fabbeenies. EDITED RE CROSS POSTS with half the universe it seems, wow. THANKS SO MUCH everyone for thinking of me and my little dogless existance here... Turn you are such a sweet person. Really a gem. Thanks to Shue, we have coffee, if there is any left for us Pacific Rim Canucks. Sausage, you are such a wirldwind, Sug you sound terrific, cant believe the difference in you. Almost I am very glad you are at day 38, way to go!
TDN, Pap, Sunni, Shue, and Blondie you have all convinced me that a second hand dog is the way to go, but I live in a mountain valley with only 21 thousand people in TOTAL, the SPCA is 50 kms away, and they might only get 1 or 2 dogs a month, if that. From what I am told Still I have called them and put my name on the list to come down and check out any pooches that come in. Its been 5 years. I think I am over loosing Kaslo, but I DO miss having a dog.
Lav sorry about the allergic reaction possibly to the raspberry scratches? That would be my guess. What a nuisance that is. Hope you feel better soon.
NICE RIDE PAP!!! That looks awesome and perfect for transporting pooches. And how do you propose to pink it up?
I am after finishing the most recent stupid science paper.. Oy gevalt I hate the ends of these things. Goes on forever. WHO CARES if there is a period at the end of the figure title number 43 ???? I get to go and set fire to stuff next week though that should be fun. Well technically I get to make a list of what is going to get set fire to. Pix from THAT should be interesting....
I am very glad to be over a year and a month. I dont miss AL at all, and unlike the first 8 to 10 months I dont feel sad that I cant have it. I made a pot roast last night and it called for wine, which I have in a closed bottle brought by my brother from 10 months ago, I opened it and it REEKED, just stank. I had to pour it down the sink at arms length and open the windows. A while ago at dinner in our little wine Region called the OKANAGAN..... my husband had a glass of very expensive pinot brought to him, and I had a sniff of that, and that was marginally better. Kind of like old socks and underwear boiled in vinegar. He said it was fab, and I thought.... maybe for you, Bub.
Anyway enough rambling. Everyone have a lovely AF day. Mr. Kaslo is interviewing perspective employees here this aft so I have to make sure its not a pig sty. ONE THING IS DEFINETELY FOR SURE
Kaslo, soggy muck but no snow.Kaslo

Funny you should say that, Kas... I feel the same way about wine. Mr. Wonderful has his nightly home made Barolo and I DETEST the smell of it. Amen.
Sunni of the R. S. (returning snow) :upset:Okay, WHO put a stop payment on my reality check?

Obviously it's early days for me yet (day 36) and I'm not taking any chances by smelling any alcohol, but what you've just experienced is good to know.
I do remember when I was 8 moths sober as time went on I couldn't stand the smell of alcohol on someone's breathe - whereas when I was drinking I didn't really notice it.
Hope everyone is having a good AF day

Im as fine as frogs hair.
Thanks to everyone. I cross posted with LV, and didnt say hi. So HI LV! THANK YOU TO EVERYONE re the leetle dug. Lots of encouragement. I am not big on big or hairy or stinky or loud or wild. I am not crazy about shedding and cleaning up poo. But I love love. And a faithful companion. and playing in the garden. and I can stand all the other stuff if i have too. After all I DO live with Mr. Kaslo, so how different is that? Hairy? Check. Stinky? Check. Loud? Check. Wild? Check. Shedding? If you count socks, and etc. So....check. Poo? Dont get me started.
AlsoI have a great place for a dog, bears aside.
The interviews are going on upstairs and I can hear laughter. My husband is quite a card.
Back to my mapping.
Love to all

Believe it or not ~
I made an online application today at DPR - Delaware Puppy Rescue
I received an email from the ASPCA today (because I donate to them). They are making a big push to find homes for lots of doggies this weekend. When I checked for the location of the nearest shelter it actually turned out to be in a neighboring state but very close by. They got right back to me & will let me know in a few days if I am approved The pups they have right now are Beagle/Something mix & will be ready to go next weekend! I want a female because of Maxie (she is not so fond of most boy dogs). I just want to be sure this will be a medium sized dog when fully grown. I already have an XL Piggy Swissy :H
My grandson was dropped off this afternoon so he's staying overnight & I have my Corgi house guest as well. I never did get into my shop LVT - but I will tomorrow.
Kaslo - you have to hear this.......
I was outside around 6 pm chasing a few chickens back into their yard (EB left the gate open again). I heard him calling me, when I looked over my shoulder there was the kid standing there with his pants down around his ankles. I said 'WHAT are you doing??? His reply was 'pooping in the grass like the dogs' :H :H
I think I may need a vacation verrrrrry soon! :HAF since 03/26/09
NF since 05/19/09
Success comes one day at a time

Cute, lav! I remember what a little fool little doggie was when she showed up at my doorstep 5 months old. Boy did I luck up on that doggie adopting me. Well so did she, really.
Kas what about a golden doodle or whatever they are called - golden & poodle mix. They seem to be pretty cool dogs. Smart.sigpic
