      Det -
I am not going to disagree with you - I know you feel strongly about this topic.
I am aware of the studies you mentioned but I do not agree!
All I have to do is look at the angiogram films of my family members to see the plaque build up which is cutting off the circulation to all of their major organs, not to mention their legs. It's not a pretty situation, believe me. My brother started having strokes at age 46, has had bypass grafts & carotid endarectomies & he's stll a freaking mess & can no longer walk more than a few feet. NO, a high fat diet is not healthy for everyone.

I just encourage everyone to challenge the 70's and 80's status quo on the subject. in the past 5 years our understanding of lipidology has made a paradigm shift. if you want to avoid what your relatives sadly went through, the true modifying factor in how your body delivers/uses it's fats is locked in what your carbohydrate intake is as a percentage of overall intake. please just check it out, that's all. and like I said....your blood tests will not lie. the truth will show itself in your very own lab results. I know it's hard to believe. love you Lav. xxxxx

Yeah PPQ, this is the point I was trying to make, not how should I lose weight which was the exact opposite of my point! Learning and ALLOWING ourselves to eat well and ENOUGH is vital for a lot of people.

Aren't there good fats and bad fats, just like good carbs and bad carbs? You can get healthy fat from nuts and avocado, coconut oil--a variety of sources.

Deter, I wish we knew about the Paleo style of eating before my father died in '93. He was busy eating whole grain and avoiding fat and eggs while his heart continued to poop out on him.

Lav, I am one who cannot eat too many carbs, even good ones. But we are all different, and if what you are doing works for you, keep with it.

I think a terrible culprit is the overuse of sugar. I use truvia, as it seems the safest of the sugar substitutes.

Anyway, thanks for the support about the money situation. I did get a few hundred dollars in today, but not from the insurance I was waiting on. And I am actually a clinical social worker, not a psychologist, but we do do many of the same things. I'm sorry to hear about your money issues, Lilly! 7K is a lot of money!

You, too, Kas. I feel bad complaining, as I am not owed nearly that much! Thank you for the very informative post about alcohol's effects. One of the reasons I stopped drinking was because I was fed up with worry about my liver, since my enzymes were elevated. It feels so much better to feel like I am healing each day, rather than further destroying myself.

Anyway, this afternoon's/evening's posts have been very informative.

              Good night, all!

i wish I could have been one of those people who starved them selves. Not me. I wore my teeth down. Ate like it was my last meal on death row, breakfast lunch and dinner, both before and after quitting. Sick or well, have not missed a meal. If there was a nuclear explosion, I would still be standing by the fridge.

I dont really want to get into an argument over the Paleo diet. Paleo has been right for you Det, and thats great. I have some concerns about how huge increase in meat consumption will effect the planet, meat production wastes huge amounts of water, is very energy demanding. I also dont think a diet heavy in animal fat and protien is good for a recovering alcohol dependant person, expecially if there is already damage to the liver kidneys gall bladder. Like Chef R I believe moderate diet and exercise is the way to go.

People in North America simply eat too much. And they eat way too much processed food. They tend to consume way too much sugar and fat, caffein and alcohol. They do not get the exercise they should. They tend to sit immobilized in front of a tv or a computer. I think these are our worst problems, and after that wether you try Paleo diets for a month, or not, quitting drinking and smoking have to have about a zillion times more health benefits than any dietary input but then as you recover, eating sensibly, with whole foods, variety and lots of exercise, and I mean LOTS every day, that is the key, I think.

Sorry Det, but I am sure glad to see your garlicky face on here again. how are you doin? And Turn as well, nice boot. I gather that is to compare to the fabulous footwear of our Mz Shue.

                Peace out.

Kas, your fine! I'm thrilled with what Im seeing locally with our chapter of the WAP foundation. when you see a father of 3 go from 140 units of insulin a day to zero in two weeks solely because of diet it makes me feel pretty damn ok! pardon me, I just can't help but spreading the joy. and there are definately local sustainable ways for our population to get back to 'real food' while damaging our environment WAY less than we are now with large scale chemical cereal grain farming.

I'm getting my stride back, definitely one carb we can all agree on nixing is the AL. that one I sure hope to keep well behind me.

hope to get back into some photography soon as well, I do miss that. it's easy to get sucked into the corporate vortex. arg!

KY, How WAS my day? Isn't it only like afternoon there in AK town? It's 1pm here and I'm about to head out into the sunshine because I have an incredibly long, boring report to edit and I figure it'll be more bearable done at a local cafe at an outdoor table. I'm juggling work from various clients and editors at the moment and everyone needs everything urgently of course so I predict I'll be working all weekend - again - but, hey, I'm glad it was quiet when I was sick and in bed comatose.

I'm with Chef on the energy-in-energy-out principle - keeps it simple. All I've been doing is basic healthy eating principles (lots of fruit, veg, low-GI grains, legumes etc, cutting out or down on bad fats, processed crap & sugar) and sticking to under 1200 calories a day (mostly) plus exercise. Seems to be working for me if slowly but surely. I use MyFitnessPal to track food intake and MapMyWalk to track walking. Try to do 45mins at the gym at least 3-4 times a week if not every week day and as much incidental exercise as I can fit in (walking instead of getting the train where I can etc). Because I lovelovelove food and cooking, sometimes I have a weekend day or night out where I go 'fuck it' and throw caution to the wind with zero guilt, like last night's feast out of Thai crispy pork belly and salted caramel ice cream mmmmmm. For me that's healthy too, because I'd never stick to a healthy eating plan (loathe the work diet) if it were too restrictive and miserable.

Turn, blood sugar was also something that got me worried about my drinking when I twice tested on the high side of it. I have a huge family history of heart disease and Type 2 Diabetes which I DO NOT WANT if I can possibly avoid it & now is the time to get off the track at 37. It was another good motivator. So feel free to share what you learn as it's something I'm also trying to tackle and need to get a better handle on. I have read a lot of the low GI stuff and try to follow those principles loosely and it DOES seem to improve my moods too when I do so it bares further exploration all around.

                          Hi all

Pq glad you got the info you needed. Lots of great info today thanks Kas.
Det sounds like you got your mo-joe back.
One of the areas that used to be a big help to all around here was the Chat. Many a time people would just drop in when the craving hit and it was a good distraction. It is also a way to get to know fellow members a little better. When i first came here many members used chat. You could find someone there almost 24/7. I lurked for over 2 months before I wrote something. First because I couldn't type very well, and as you will see I sk at spelling. I found it didn't matter people were there to help me. It seems a quiet cycle for chat now but that can change. Drop in if someone is there. The more support we can give each other the better the results.

the energy -in/out thing is quite fascinating. as much as that sounds like it should be right, human metabolism doesn't work that way. some foods (whole grain bread for example) drives up insulin as well as sharply spiking glucose levels and manages to force your body to store fat in lipogenesis much more so than lets say the caloric equal in protein or good fats. hence: all calories are not equal. sorry to be a bore, I just find this stuff fascinating.

Cay, I'll look for you on chat buddy. it's been too long.

Hi Lilly, no not smoking. I only did when drinking. Total madness - would have a bottle of wine and smoke 10 fags with it! I had otherwise stopped and never thought about it. The last quit (longest) I kept them going to see if that would help Anyway it didn't and I think one of the reasons I relapsed as my addicted brain was still alive and well. This time no booze/no smokes so day 4 on both. Never think about smoking thankfully.
