Ladies on a Mission: The Official Site

Daisy!! I read your post in the Nest! How exciting to be starting a new venture. Would love to hear more about it. How many kids are you taking care of? How old are they? And you're doing it with your daughter? It sounds really good--and congrats on your last day 2..:l

Love the "mindfulness" - going to focus on that too.

And the next thought, whatever happens, "Good thing I'm sober and able to deal with this".
Wow. You ladies never cease to amaze me with fresh wisdom and new insights.

LB; so sorry about the purse! Hope you get all your stuff sorted out with minimum stress!

            Thank you everybody.
Daisy I did home daycare for 6 years. 24 hours the first 3. It was a lot of fun.

:damn:LB, That really sucks. But like Pav said, dealing with it sober or anything like this is much easier. Still sucks though! :l

LC, we start of with a short story unit, then poetry, nonfiction, and our big reads are Flowers for Algernon and The Diary of Anne Frank. We do a lot of State testing prep which I hate, but needs to be done and this year our big focus will be nonfiction. So great your daughter is home and happy! Sounds like it was a great reunion.

Daisy, tell us about your childcare adventure! You def will need to be sober 24/7 for that! Imagine caring for those children with a hangover. No way!

Hi Giraffe! Don't forget your mindfulness today and I won't either.

Getting ready to leave house to finish prepping classroom. Have a great day ladies.

                  Good day, Ladies!

Oh my, Daisy, you have your hands full! So nice, though to have little ones around. Like J-vo said, and you already know, NO place for a hangover. Do you have a good plan for how you will relax in the evening? After such a long, possibly stressful day, it might be important to have it all written out. I know for myself, after work can be a tough time.

J-vo, I remember reading both of those books. Heavy subjects to be dealing with--do most of the students seem to already have some experience/knowledge about the subjects? I guess you must be working together with the History teachers, at least. It must be such an interesting age to work with-- the transition into adulthood. Sorry I have so many questions.. I guess I'm particularly interested because my daughter is coming upon that stage in life--still has a year+.

I'm noticing today that my mind has been wandering a bit-- I've been reading in the Nest, a lot of good posts going on there. I know the most important thing for me is to stay in the moment. If I begin to get overwhelmed, I just concentrate on now, on this day. Again, as I was having a rest, I told myself to relax, that I am doing the most important thing I need to be doing. Honesty with myself is my top priority.

More banana turds here too Jane, I lost a post too. Nothing terribly interesting though. I had my follow up appointment today at hospital and they did not get all the cancer and did a second surgery.
Hopefully that is that. I thought it might be a bit too easy.

I am exhausted! Half an hour to go. Every day won't be so long, just depends on shifts......but what a way to start!
It will mainly be after school care but the early morning starts are a good incentive.....

Dream glad you find that funny.
Yes the early morning drop offs are rough if you aren't ready Daisy.

                            Evening Ladies,

El, sorry to hear about your additional surgery! How are you feeling? Sending some hugs to you. Hope you got lots of rest today. :l

LC, we do build lots of background prior to the books we read, especially Anne Frank and the Holocaust. It's about a nine weeks unit. We've had holocaust survivors come to our school and share their stories over the years. Now it's getting hard to do as they're really up in age, if they're still around. Mindfulness wasn't my thing today. I'll work on it tomorrow!

I don't know if NS posted this on Loamers, but I saw it in the nest and watched it. It's a video on the "Disease Model of Addiction." It was the most informative video, easy to comprehend, and I was riveted to Dr. McKauley the whole hour and 12 minutes! Took notes, too. He explains step by step how alcoholism is really a disease, and I never understood it as I do now. Pleasure is one of our senses. Actually there are 10 senses, not five. But the disease model is this...

                            Organ

                            Defective organ based on condition

                            Symptoms

Well, our organ is the mid-brain. There is a defect in the pleasure part of our brain - not enough dopamine released. Pleasure that increases masses amounts of dopamine is our drug of choice. When we don't get the dopamine release due to unmanaged stress, this results in our symptoms...loss of control, craving, persistent drug use despite negative consequences. The way we get dopamine rushes is from a whole list of drugs he pointed out, including alcohol. We need our tools in place to regulate our stress levels and increase dopamine naturally. So...Here's his definition of addiction:

"Addiction is a dysregulation of the mid brain (different from front cortex and he explains all of that) dopamine system due to unmanaged stress resulting in symptoms of decreased functioning...specifically loss of control, craving, persistent drug use. We need to use our tools as our treatment."

I can't tell you how helpful this video was to me in understanding the whole disease model. I encourage all of you to watch!

El, I hope you feel better And that they got all the damn cancer! Frickin cancer! You are one strong lady.

LilB, sucks about your purse. Hopefully you can replace the stuff relatively easy.

Hey, I am super tired. So so busy at work and no time to read or post. I will spend more time here on Friday because I don't work.
