Hi GLoamers, hope everyone got through the weekend and today okay! Hearing about nursie's mom took a lot out of me, the same thing happened to me two years ago....but time does heal wounds....and I know my mom is in a better place, reunited with my dad and 2 brothers...

Not much new on my front, as narilly can attest, the weather is turning colder, had a bit of snow today, and not much improvement for the week, colder actually! The youngsters better dress up warm Friday night for their door to door sugar frenzy lol

Attended a couple of functions over the weekend, Friday night and Saturday night, where the drinks were all around me, all I could think of was how happy I was that it didn't bother me! Both evenings, iced tea was just fine, and I drove home without any fear of being pulled over by the cops! Being AF has so many rewards if we just open our eyes to them! There are days when simple things get to bothering me, but I no longer think of fixing them with alcohol, just step back and hand it over to Him and view the results in the morning...

Great to see everyone posting and hanging in there... this is a journey we can't travel alone! Have a great evening or whatever it is in your neck of the woods, and remember, keep it between the lines eh!

Abcowboy, your post made me think of the only thing I miss about drinking - it made me warmer and because the only thing I drank was red wine, even it wasn't cold. Ice tea might not cut it when your real winter arrives. What is going to be your beverage of choice then?

I am reading a great book right now - Sherman Alexie's The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven. Alcohol, sadly, is one of the main characters. The destruction caused by this drug in Native American communities is just tragic. The stories are great in many ways, including as an argument for not drinking.

I hope your birthday was a good one, Jane, and that your vacation is providing you with some nice relaxation. If some thoughts of why not drink are coming into your head, I sure hope you do come back here and get them squashed! We'll be able to give you several reasons .

NS - Isn't it great knowing there are so many other things to keep you warm other than the wine! Of course I have my favorite, strong black coffee, but Arnold Palmer Arizona Iced Tea is great any time of the year! I change it up with Powerade as well so as to keep the calorie intake down lol

Hi folks -- am very, very happy in my new digs. I've escaped Party Central and am now completely alone in a beautiful space, where I actually have the freedom to enjoy a quiet evening siting in a living room and watch t.v.! Without any drinkers or smokers anywhere!! This is costing me a bit more per night than my other deal, but is SO, so worth it. I'm so completely content  I look forward to waking up early tomorrow morning and exercising - with a t.v. on- without worrying about bothering any hung over people. Hooray! I hope all is well with all of you this evening, and Happy Birthday Jane!!! fireslippersup.jpg (My view from where I'm sitting in my quiet new rental) (hope the pic works...)

Happy Birthday, Sweet Jane. Hope you had a fabulous one, and that As1&2 were good to you.

              LB - Sorry about FiL.

Cowboy - I LOVE that feeling, too, driving home alert and safe. My DH used to drive us home, and now I'm realizing he did it over the limit more than I knew. I'm glad I can take over the duties.

I definitely have Giants fever and will be back in action more when the World Series is over. I am a big fan and this is so exciting.

Hope all is well with the Gloamers.

And I'm wondering if anyone saw this about Elizabeth Pena who just died. Turns out it was cirrhosis and alcoholism. Not kind to AA in the article, but some hard truths about women and drinking.

                    Hi Gloamers

Well i am a tad over this damn weather, 31 degrees one day and 18 the next. I refuse to walk in the wind so feeling a bit frustrated.

LB i hope your fil is ok and you and hubs are going well.

Move over Pepper i want to join you please and thank you. My place is never quiet but its just the boys playing xbox with their friends. i enjoy it so much more now that tye does not drink and i dont have to clean up empties.

Pav, what are the Giants? Football? Enjoy the games, we will be here when they are finished and we have some celebrating to do in a few days time.

Cowboy, i just love driving now with both eyes open. I can see so much better! It makes me cringe to think i thought i was ok to drive. So many bad memories but i am replacing them with so many good ones.

NS i still have not gotten into reading, i am too busy knitting and catching up on tv shows that i wanted to watch but knew it was pointless as i would never remember them.

Well i had better go and get the dogs dinners ready. Maybe i might get into cooking one day too. I must say at being so close to 11 months sober that life is so good, i am growing so much emotionally that it startles me some days. I have missed out on so much by drinking but i am slowly getting it all back.

                    Take care everyone xxxxx

Interesting read Pav - I had seen her death was alcohol related, but had not seen this discussion in regards to AA. Pretty sad. Thanks for sharing - does give me cause for pause as i have a 16year old and wondering about how to bring her up in this world, then the 13yr old coming behind...I would love them to have a good relationship with wine/drinking but wondering if it is truly possible...

You know, SL, it seems that there are people who can drink, receive the apparent benefits, and not suffer any ill effects but I don't think a relationship with something that is doing these things to a person could ever be considered good:

Depending on how much is taken and the physical condition of the individual, alcohol can cause:
                            • Slurred speech
                            • Drowsiness
                            • Vomiting
                            • Diarrhea
                            • Upset stomach
                            • Headaches
                            • Breathing difficulties
                            • Distorted vision and hearing
                            • Impaired judgment
                            • Decreased perception and coordination
                            • Unconsciousness
                            • Anemia (loss of red blood cells)
                            • Coma
                            • Blackouts (memory lapses, where the drinker cannot remember events that occurred while under the influence)

                            LONG-TERM EFFECTS OF ALCOHOL

Binge drinking and continued alcohol use in large amounts are associated with many health problems, including:

                            • Unintentional injuries such as car crash, falls, burns, drowning
                            • Intentional injuries such as firearm injuries, sexual assault, domestic violence
                            • Increased on-the-job injuries and loss of productivity
                            • Increased family problems, broken relationships
                            • Alcohol poisoning
                            • High blood pressure, stroke, and other heart-related diseases
                            • Liver disease
                            • Nerve damage
                            • Sexual problems
                            • Permanent damage to the brain
                            • Vitamin B1 deficiency, which can lead to a disorder characterized by amnesia, apathy and disorientation
                            • Ulcers
                            • Gastritis (inflammation of stomach walls)
                            • Malnutrition
                            • Cancer of the mouth and throat

                            http://www.drugfreeworld.org/drugfacts/alcohol/short-term-long-term-effects.html

If alcohol were currently an illegal drug, there is no way it ever would be legalized now. Many of us here refuse to take medications with innocuous side effects relative to those of alcohol. Not only are outright addicts tricked by AL - so are societies!

Im not trying to restart the temperance society here , but I do believe that alcohol is the problem.

SL, I could take all the stats in the world and apply them to me, I should be dead! But me, you, and the rest of us here on MWO have a greater mission, the Big Guy made it that way....under a year relapse/slip 78%, over a year 64%, over 5 years 7%, I aim to prove those results wrong! So should the rest of us....

                                G'night all.

Ava - the Giants play baseball, and not very well this evening. One. More. Game.

I have so much to say to you, SL and NS about what you posted, but that will have to wait. I feel almost "out of touch" when I question alcohol at EVERY event, as I know I would have been incredulous if someone had invited me ANYWHERE without alcohol. Now I know so much more, but I have to remember how others must feel like I did.

                                Anyway - night everyone.
