I also think we exaggerate our intolerance to many foods. Gluten e.g. is not evil but many people say they are intolerant when they are not by clinical standards (I know some people are gluten intolerant and have celiac disease). But some just eat too much and put this down to gluten.
To me, a diet change is a reasonable thing for anyone with a chronic health problem to consider. The one thing most of us do every single day is eat so it is possible that something we are eating is responsible for something we consistently are experiencing. And the thing with gluten is that unless you actively avoid it, it is very likely you will consume it almost every time you eat.

My work and personal experience has been that in an effort to regain lost health, people are willing to try almost any dietary change. But - unless it makes a (fairly quick) difference, they go back to their former eating habits. I know people are pretty cynical about the gluten free bandwagon that others are jumping on (this is a hilarious take on it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oht9AEq1798) but the fact is, a gluten-free diet is too inconvenient and way too expensive to stick with unless it is making a difference. And many, many people are sticking with it. If it were only a placebo effect, it is unlikely that it would be effective for months and years as many people are experiencing. It is a pretty easy experiment to re-introduce it briefly and see what happens and then decide whether the benefits of not eating it are worth the hassle. Like drinking, that is one experiment I won't be trying again !

Well folks up early here and it looks like we have got the diet thing going.
By the way I have been a vegetarian (later adding fish so I am now a pescetarian) for c 30 years. I have been fat/skinny/drinking alcoholically/sober/pregnant/menopausal/single/living with others/travelled to many places/sick/well/depressed/happy and more. Its just what I am.

      Now the great news!!

      HAPPY BIRTHDAY SCOTTISH LASS

My bottom line is that people should eat what makes them overall feel as good as they can. That varies among individuals.

        Happy Birthday, SL!

Thanks for the wee wish Jane - that's lovely! and all other wishes - it is my birthday eve over here in the very far west. TT gets to everything first - allows me to celebrate for longer - or just get old earlier!!!
Have a two day conference that is put on by the governments regulatory arm - not much fun. Had to come home tonight as daughter has a final project due tomorrow and I just have to check she is ready - up at 4:30am tomorrow to get back to the second day - so much for a birthday treat!
Not much to add to the diet thoughts - I just try to eat fresh, in season good food - little too much chocolate and ice cream, but a girl has to do what a girl needs to - right???
              See you all tomorrow!

'Night, Loamers. Another busy day, ending late after another school event.

                SSDD for me, too.

I am going away with some good friends for the weekend. Looking forward to laughing and crying with them as we get away from it all. I might be scarce, but I won't be drinking, of that I am sure.

                xo

Goooooooooood Morning Vietnam! (Robin Williams film reference in case anyone doesn't recognize this - isn't it funny how things run through the mind at the strangest time)
8am in beautiful NJ today. Its MOVING DAY for MIL. I am heading over there in about 1/2 hour to help out. I think I've mentioned before (but in case I didn't), she has a "beau". They have known each other for decades, having bonded in the 70's when his young family moved from India close to where MIL's family was living in NY. They were best friend families, raised their kids together, and stuck together at a time when the minority population was not as great. Her husband died suddenly in 2003 and his wife from cancer about 6 months after that. They helped each other through their grieving and over time became each others other special person. I tred lightly using vocabulary here because MIL does not like any innuendo suggesting romance or friskiness- for a few reasons. In any case, they are "going steady".

In contemplating convenience and the next stage in their lives, he sold his apartment in NYC a year ago when they each bought to-be-built town homes in a nice senior community that has lots of amenities and social activities. They bought town houses that are side by side. We call him Uncle.

The dialogue that takes place between these two is a pisser. They frequently bicker- "I am NOT talking to him" she will say with him standing right there. He has already moved into his townhouse (last week) and they are already competing over paint colors and furniture- while furniture shopping, him pointing to an ugly white leather sofa and saying "You should get this. It is comfortable and you don't care what it looks like." Her - "WHAT? I do so care. You just want my couch to be ugly so you can brag about how nice your couch is!" Another favorite, "He is cheap." "No, she is cheap." "You are much cheaper than me with your ugly shoes." "And you always want to go to Dollar Store." All of this standing right next to one another while speaking to me and hubs. Its like kids that love to tattle on each other.
An entire sitcom is sitting right before me word for word- no imagination required. Anyway, today should be interesting.

Wishing everyone a lovely day. Feeling much much better than I did the other day thanks to some 1 on 1 with NS. What a resource we have in each other. I wish Jvo, Giraffe Wagmore, and Mylife would turn up. Miss those guys. Also Roxanne who I know is around, but enjoyed her posts. Mein, hope you will check in. Dont even think about it, just type.
                  Love you all.

Wow Jane, I was just thinking about whether or not I had the best sunrises in the whole world - cos we just had one that was magnificent here this Saturday morning. Sun rising over the Pacific Ocean - its so beautiful.
Speaking of the Pacific Ocean - when are you getting your next ocean hit SL? I guess there is no time soon - as you are off to Scotland soon. Please post if you get anxious about this or contact me.
Pav - I hope you enjoy your weekend with your pals and laugh and cry endlessly.

That was quite a wee story about your MIL Jane. You told it so well. I hope when it gets frustrating you can laugh some of this off - because we have to do that don't we? You know, even in the darkest moments I have usually found a remnant of a sense of humor - not the laugh out loud kind or putting others down or even obvious jokes - just the humor in everyday existence.

So what are other people's plans this weekend? I keep forgetting that I am in the different timezone - even Ava is an hour or so behind me (cue, Aussie jokes here but I will refrain!). In a few weeks time I will be in the European timezone - hellz, I am not looking forward to a trip with no stopovers from NZ to Belgium. But no-one is making me do this. Its optional for me. As I have said, travel is much much easier now that I am AF. The jet-lag is far easier, and I can cope with less sleep and difficult situations . Even the clinking of the drinks trolley on the plane no longer sets off a Pavlovian reaction from me. Belgium of course is a place where people drink quite freely but there is also coffee, mineral water and best of all, divine chocolate! Do the calorie maths ladies - what would you opt for these days? Besides the work side of things, it will be lovely to catch up with my friend and since I really love art and history, there will much for me to do.

SL - officially I guess today is your birthday. Its a pity you have to go to that conference. I hope the evening checking your daughter's assignment goes OK but it sounds like you are dashing about and won't have too much sleep. Drive safely.

Catch everyone else later - Nar, Dot, and all the others. Hi Ginger!

Pounding headache after a long day that concluded with me developing a bad case of the bitchies and acute onset Tourette's Syndrome like honesty. Waiting for the Advil to kick in. Love to all.

Worry about tomorrow, tomorrow. Just get through today. Tomorrow will look after itself when it becomes today, because today is all we have to think about.

Happy Birthday, SL!! Here's hoping you have a fabulous day!

I was doing clean-eating/paleo'ish, until about 3 weeks ago on Mother's Day in the U.S., when I added back into the fold as much ice cream as I wanted, whenever I wanted, every day...and took away breakfast and lunch. And added back carbs. I crashed/burned diet-wise on the day my MIL fell, then through the funeral, up until today. I'm promising myself and you all right here on this keyboard that I'm reforming tomorrow morning. So that's my plan for this weekend. Also, adding that crap back in has me depressed, my knees hurt constantly again, and my stomach is upset a lot. So in case anyone's wondering, that diet pretty much doesn't work well.

I hope you all have a great weekend!

                              Hi loamers

Weekend check in, week days have been a bitch for me this week, so busy at work throw in a couple of 2 hour commutes due to accidents and makes for a tired and stressed Av.a. To top it off i have aggravated my discs in my dodgy back so Valium here i come. The problem is it is a beautiful clothes drying day and we seem to be getting very few of them at this time of year. Oh well shit happens.

Happy birthday SL I hope you have a lovely day and its so much better celebrating it sober with no cravings to get fecked up to enjoy it.

Loved the "tourettes syndrome honesty" Jane, i am nearly to that stage also, super gluing my mouth is an option!

                              Have a great weekend everyone.

Hi Lovely ladies (and ABC - love that cake!).
Long day and and knackered (good descriptive British word)
Weekend here - but as usual kid stuff to run them around to.
TT - no beach trips scheduled - off to mountains next Thursday for 7 days - should be lovely, but the waterfalls likely sad. To home end July, so have a while to prepare.
Sorry, not much to say tonight - maybe into the weekend, I will have more energy to write a bit more.
Did have a fleeting thought about a drink tonight, but it did not last - I consider that a victory - not really a craving Ava, well actually not even close - so, yes a lovely celebration
Will check in later - please enjoy my birthday with me, and have a treat of your desire with me!:applouse:
