Congratulations, Giraffe! Don't you feel like you've gone around the world in those 80 days? AF life is so much different (and better)!
Star, cutting sugar and sugar-producing carbs decreases AL cravings in many people, including me. Also, there is considerable evidence that the low carb diet you describe is much better for you than the Food Pyramid approach, which has pretty much made us sick and fat .
Ann, I think the rational approach is the way to do this - your advice is spot on! The AL voice is the emotional, impulsive part that is taking us down. We've got to use our executive brain to make a good plan and put it in place.
Hope all Lomers are having a great day! :h NS

Thanks, NS. I am starving, just eating this fruit:upset:
I think I'll go back to the high protein, low carb plan. I know it really helped curb my cravings before and I lost weight (slowly though)....:heartbeat:

Way to go Giraffe! Yippee, 80 days, that is awesome! I hope to get there myself. One day at a time right?
Hey Star, have a little protein with all that yummy salad (which sounds delish!). I just had some chicken breast with asparagus and sweet potato. It was very good. I know the chicken will stick to my ribs for awhile so I won't be hungry in an hour (I hope). Usually the protein along with veggies works well for me and helps with weight maintenance.
Ann, that was the BEST suggestion. Picking up something yummy to eat after work to treat yourself. If that helps you not to drink, I think it is well worth it. 4 glass of wine, depending on the size is say around 400Calories, a yummy treat is probably less and it probably would be more than 4 glasses! I went for a salted caramel sunday last week on Saturday and that was my reasoning. "I am not drinking so why not FFS!"
Low carb is fine but it should be balanced. We all need our fiber to keep regular right! Porridge, brown rice, whole wheat bread. Those kind of carbs are good, just use moderation. That kind of moderation is not so hard to do!
Anyway, Back to work.Narilly

Thanks, Nar! I will be heading home in a bit. The drive home is the worst part. If I can just make it home without stopping for drink, I am usually fine. Unless, of course, the husband gets the bright idea to offer me some drink. Not tonight though. I am feeling strong right now. Thanks for everyone's help.:heartbeat:

Star,
An ice cream cone would be awesome and totally distracting from drinking. Get one and eat that on the way home. AL thoughts will not survive against that!
YOU are strong sista!Narilly

Star you can do this girl, we are all here for you but you need to prioritise yourself so you can help your daughter is my opinion. If you are not drinking then things are so much clearer. I was never fully there for my kids when i was drunk, hungover, angry, sad, blackouted. I regret that totally but now i am here for them totally and sober. I was not really here mentally when my son came home with a crack addiction, sure i was here physically but not mentally and i am so sad about that. He had an addiction and i had one too but he admitted his and i didnt. You are in contact with her that is the main thing.
NS you are a treasure my lovely and your advice to me is vital in keeping on this path. Not sure if lunatic linda has settled down ha ha but if it stops me pouring al down my throat then so be it and you havent told me to shut up yet like my kids do. Exactly 7 days today in Aus till you hit a year!
Nar you made me laugh, skating to work! I was swimming to work in sweat. You do know Nar that the thinking is worse than the actual with the al. Everyone says on here they worried about a certain situation and then when there worried for nothing but its always good to be extra vigilant. You have great days up now and imagine putting day 1 on here again. Speak to Jvo about that! (no offense lovey).
Aca very true in what you said about the children and MERE is not a word you should use. Be proud of those days, every single damn one of them. I have never ever gone this amount of time in so many years.
Giraffe 80 days woo hoo to you, there are some big numbers atm on MWO which is great to see.
Dot that sounds so healthy, i need to change my diet but sugar is still a big thing for me so i am eating it. I figure the few kilos i have gained will go at some stage. Eating is novel as i never ate when drinking, i was lucky to have one meal a day.
Well today will be the last day of me complaining about the heat. Its 35 and 9.30am, bushfires everywhere, people being evacuated, thunderstorms starting more fires, sometimes it does not feel like the lucky country when this happens. I am home today to keep an eye on my 11 year old maltese, she is just exhausted from this heat so if we make it through today i will be happy, she is epileptic also.
Jvo, Pav where are you guys? Well i am off to have my cup of tea before it makes me nauseous and hang some washing out so it drys in 5 minutes. Take care guys and keep warm.AF free 1st December 2013 - 1st December 2022 - 9 years of freedom

Pav,
I was rereading my journal and I came across something I had reposted from Byrdie. This may not hit the nail on the head with how you're feeling, but it may help to know it's a normal stage. This is just part of the whole process, but is the stage you may be in now. Strength to you sister.
This stage is followed by Depression. This usually hits right around where you are now...30-45 days. it's a period of "now what?" Is this all there is? I've proven I can do this, now what is the point? The euphoria of being amazed THAT we can do it is now replaced with a 'so what' attitude. We don't know what to do with ourselves. This is where an awful lot of growth happens. I think our emotional selves catches up to our chronological selves. When we start abusing AL I think our emotional growth stops. We learn a new set of coping skills (escape from our problems instead of facing them). Depression takes some time to get thru, but once you are on the other side, it's like stepping out of a world of black and white into a world of COLOR!!Sometimes what you're most afraid of doing is the very thing that will set you free.

Dot, being the animal lover that I am, I would really like it if I could go vegetarian/vegan, but I just can't do it. My body seems to do better when I have some animal protein in it. I think it stabilizes my blood sugar levels and keeps me from craving too. So I will stick to what has worked for me before and hope it has the same effect.
Ladies! I made it home safely without stopping for drink and am feeling great. I got home and put a nice chicken in the oven to roast for dinner, then I went on a walk through a beautiful nature trail in my neighborhood. The weather here is perfect today and I really enjoyed it. I actually gave myself a pat on the back for doing so well. So proud. Just need to keep it up. Thanks for all your support today. I was just comparing my "yesterday" to my "today". Holy crap. Yesterday, I drank like a fish all day long and don't even remember the afternoon. What a waste. Today much better.:heartbeat:

MAE Loamers,
So last night, I was up until after 11:00. That's like the middle of the night for me. Anyhow, my son needed me to proofread his research paper. And this is what I'm grateful for. I was awake, I could read his paper, and make good suggestions. At one point, he said to me, "Mom, you think too much. That sentence was fine.." And then me, "but look at all of these cool transition phrases we can use instead of this one!" as I'm looking them up online. He's right. I think too much.
Star, I just finished reading all of the posts. I'm so glad you made it home and had a nice walk. You deserve that pat on the back. And the comparison to yesterday is what you need to keep fresh in your mind.
NS and Acadia, what great advice you gave to Star. Wow, the support and care here is amazing. We will carry one another when needed. All we have to do is ask.
MossRose, welcome to LOAMS!! Great to have you here!
Nar, we need to talk about this Florida trip. Did you think of any visualizing techniques? How about doing some meditating while you're there - in between laying in the sunshine or whatever you do on vacation. Will you get your normal exercise? How about setting goals to get up really early to see the sunrise while on your healthy walk? Set up a massage time. Did you get a pedi yet? Sorry, so many questions!!!!!!
Ava, glad you got through that nasty weather. We had record lows last week, and this week record highs for you. Hope your doggie is feeling better. Give him hugs for me.
Patrice, hope your son feels better! And you got a day off!
DTD, we do have to work hard at this and work for it. But you're so right. It does pay off. I can think of so many things that I'm grateful for when I am AF. And so many reasons I feel like crap when I drink. Hard work = results.
Mein, I'm sorry you're feeling sad! That has to be really difficult being in a country and not knowing the language. Is there a gym you can join to get out a little?
SL, see ya in 14! OMG. We have a ways to go, Scottish friend.
Giraffe, congratulations on our 80. That's just freaking fantastic!!!!!!
Humble, still sleeping?Sometimes what you're most afraid of doing is the very thing that will set you free.
