Whats in that bottle for you?

Happy, mad, glad, sad, bored, tired, angry, lonely or just habit. Maybe some, maybe all.

An old timer told me once " I started drinking so long ago I forgot why I started drinking!"

All I know now is one of the best parts of this day 40AF is to enjoy a saturday morning for the first time for as long as I can remember.

For some reason I'm thinking about that old black and white movie "The Days Of Wine and Roses" with Jack Lemon when they strap him down on the bed to detox him and how awful that scene was. Its a real reminder, not that I need to be reminded (maybe I do)how awful those first few days were.

So I guess what I learning and I stress Learnig is despite what's going on around me or in my head there is nothing in that bottle for me anymore. Today.

hi Barry, good question. I looked to that bottle for company, happiness and escapism. I would open it, drink it, finish it and open another. I would bury my head in the sand and try not to think that I was doing anything harmful. Mad eh! Thanks for this thread. Bella xx

Well happy day 40 to you Barry!!!!!:h
What a lovely post....I must admit, my weekends are THE BIZ without hangovers and shameful memories....I also used to 'love' weekends, because it meant that when I woke up at 2:00 in the morning after a nights binging (I would start at about 6:00 and have collapsed a couple of hours later) I didn't have to worry about work, and could start on the wine cask where I had left off and have another couple of bottles......THIS was my idea of a 'great weekend'.......

Now I, like you, relish the lovely sober mornings and full days of simple enjoyment...even if it's just being able to do the vacuuming without the aid of a cocktail of painkillers....
Oirish once put in a fantastic post about someone iat her work moaning about 'boring' days, and how, for her, every day was a FANTASTIC day when sober....this is just how I feel....I thought the feeling might wear off, but it increases every time I do something else...anything else that I would previously have destroyed or not have experienced at all because of being plastered or hung over....

Way to go Barry....enjoy your weekend Bud, and thanks for starting this positive thread

        40 :goodjob:

The Beautiful South says well what is in the bottle in their "Look what I found in my beer' lyrics:
Look what I found in my beer
A couple of dancing ladies and a ticket out of here
Look what I found in my beer
A start to being lonely and an end to my career

Look what he found in his gin
Lights' looking lively when love's looking dim
Look what he found in his gin
Souls look heavy when personality's thin

Look what I found in my beer
A free test drive for a heart I cannot steer

Look what I found in my drink
A brain without a plughole and a sink without a think
Look what I found in my drink
A "love you" to the barmaid and a too-familiar wink

Look what we found in his booze
The reflection of him and his children without shoes
Look what we found in his booze
This mornings jigsaw in a hill of last nights clues

          Way to go Barry!

The Days of Wine & Roses I have watched on numerous occasions... if you like b&w another good film is The Lost Weekend ... I can most relate to 28 days & if anyone has not seen it yet I strongly recommend it ... pill person? I'm Dancing As Fast As I Can... Whose Afraid of Virginia Wolf is also good... La Liz won the oscar -- funny she and Richard Burton would film their best scenes after lunch -- Liz later admitted to drinking an entire bottle of wine for herself at lunch ... and she was on every pill imaginable ... Barry thanks for the encouraging post -- I am only three days beihind you... and feel good ...

:applaud: Good deal on the 40 :applaud:

I drank to stop my mind from thinking. I hope brain damage isn't permanent :fingers:

                      Otie... I love your poem.

For me 7 days abs ment waking up at 6:30am on Sunday and going into the garden with my binocs because the birds were all churping away so loudly I wanted to identify them all. It was magic and my puppies and wild cat loved the early morning company instead of waiting for the house keeper to arrive and feed them. Also slowly catching up with a back log of work and making NEW plans.

Looking forward to the challenge of this new week and feeling happier about life.
