Re: 16th July

MAE everyone!

Mick - that's a wonderful poem, thank you for sharing it! It definitely resonates with me, and sadly it is probably something most families experience with at least one loved one over time. If Julie feels like she lost her dad 7 years ago, that means you all have been dealing with this for quite some time. I'm so terribly sorry. We definitely hold our breath every time we visit - will it be a good day or a bad day? Pretty stressful tbh - it sounds like you can relate. No vacation booked yet - we've got the time blocked out on my work schedule but now waiting to see if the wildfires in the area calm down. We may have to head to the coast instead of the mountains.

NS - I look forward to hearing more about your editing job. Please do share whatever you're able/willing to. I can totally relate to what you said about grieving the loss of your mom even while she was still alive. I think I heard or read that dementia is "the long goodbye" as it's not a sudden loss but a protracted one. You have my sympathy and empathy.

Steady - so great to see you, and thank you for the shout out. Really glad to hear you're still sober (of course you are - you don't drink!). I would say post when you can, no need to make it long or address everyone. Personally, I think the best part of having people post is the energy it contributes, not the specifics of the comments/post.

Lav - that's scary about the Amish guy and his horse. I can see how dangerous that would be. I hope your computer gets itself together this weekend, and that the new software is a breeze to master. Sounds like you're on top of it.

Pretty tuckered so gonna sign off for tonight. Happy Fridays to everyone and I'll catch you tomorrow.

Re: 16th July

mae all ,how are we doing today then?hope everyone is doing ok. Yesterdays rest day failed miserably...ended up taking the rest of the stone out,and putting it round the back in the garden. Its raining and Ive got a ton of soil coming today ...then got to go and get some euros for next week.

hiya Wags ,how are you doing today then mate?hope all is well with you .at least you have the holiday time blocked out .I forgot about the wild fires...very easy to do when its persisting it down here!take care and have a good weekend .

hiya teegee ,how are you doing?hope all is well with you?We have got a dining table ,but I thin k the last time it was used as a sit down for a meal, was about 5 or 6 years ago ...I dont know if people do sit down at the table together nowadays ,apart from special occasions .Glad that the Roman Holiday link worked for you .You are right ..we were all really "a pack " then .yep ,kitchen finished ,onwards and upwards ,,hope you have a good weekend .

hiya Lav ,how are you doing?still waiting for the big rain?its on the way .......it has just stopped for a wee holiday here before it moves over the pond.that sounds pretty heavy with the Amish guy and the horse. you have to remember you are reliant on horse power ...literally.Is there any sort of test etc that has to be done prior to going on the road or can you jusr hitch up and go.Fitted a new rear camera to the van yesterday too,and also a shoe rack....well needed!!
Made me smile when you mentioned the vacuum....remember the carpet sweepers with the rollers that you used to push ?we are going up to look at doors tomorrow .The door itself is reasonable ,but the ancillaries are pretty top dollar .
I looked around the threads yesterday, the number of posts as opposed to the number of views overall is very low indeed ,so people are still here I guess .I think you are right ,we have a group where we discuss things and generally yak over things not necessarily al related ,..we will see what happens ...have a good weekend .

hiya Steadfast ...firstly well done on the no booze news ...good for you .as for tying yourself in knots about posting ...on here we are happy to just bimble along talking anything ,its relaxed and chilled ..no big stress ,I dont know how the threads were set up or even by whom, ...you take care and have a good weekend .

hiya editor ...how goes it with you Ns?hope all is good with you ..yep a lot have moved on ,left for their own reasons ....etc .I have 2 editions of word ...2013 and 2016...so I guess I fall into your category.....hopeyou have a good weekend

hiya slo,pie ,ppqp and everyone else...hope you havea good weekend .

Glass coffins! will they catch on?
Remains to be seen!

Bloody fly didn't know what hit him!
And I need a new iPad!

So I gave it a go!
Long story short the goldfish is now dead!

Told my boss that three companies are after me and they need to give me a pay rise! He said which companies?
I said gas, water and electric!

Re: 16th July

Good afternoon on a sunny Friday!

Not much doing here, but I got the sheets to both beds laundered, and washed & vacuumed the interior of my car.
And that’s enough! I have to divvy out my chores due to limits on how much I can do each day because of the knee pain & swelling.
The knee consult just resulted in: your LCL seems fine, and to fix the laxity & chronic pain, you would need the actual hardware worked on, not the soft tissue surrounding it. So, for what it’s worth, I have a consult with yet another knee specialist in September.

Dementia is such a slog! STEADFAST, you had a long haul with it with both parents. I spent one day each week with my MIL with dementia. Mick’s touching poem says it all. Especially the last line: “talk to me, sit with me, and just hold my hand”. My MIL was a stubborn & obstinate style sufferer, so that didn’t help matters. She was on Haldol though, so that helped. Her daughter questioned that, since it could cause an earlier death apparently; but all I could think about that was…So? She was having a long, miserable 15-year downhill slide with the dementia, and the Haldol at least enabled her to stay home with her husband.

I thawed a steak from the FarmersMarket last night for my dinner, and had it with baked potato and zucchini.

TG, can you take your meals with your elder, and the two of you eat together?

Perhaps this thread could be changed back to a monthly thread, to help people find it better?
I access it under “Recent Forum Posts”, but apparently our posts on here don’t show up under that category for everyone?

Could for Julie for quitting, Mick! I guess there was less incentive to drink, since her partner no longer was. We quit at the same time, she & I, as my 5-year anniversary is tomorrow!

The room that I had painted a different grey color thankfully looks more taupe than grey, since it’s a very warm grey.

Due to being born about the time Mary Poppins came out, I never got to see it as a kid. My mother used to sing, “A Spoonful of Sugar” and “Supercalifragilicious”, but I had no real reference point for them. I enjoyed it on video (over & over!) though when my daughters were young.

Young daughter has invited me to get together with her for dinner soon!
Once a pickle, never a cucumber again.

Re: 16th July

Good evening all!

Well had had a BIG storm overnight & got about 1.5” of rain. It was very windy too but my deck cats didn’t blow away, Lol
It was a bit cooler & less humid today, weekend is supposed to be nice too

Slo, CONGRATS to you on your soon to be 5 year AF anniversary! That’s quite an accomplishment for anyone but especially for you having gone thru so many changes over the past year or two. Keep the good work going!
So you think a revision of your knee is in order? What are the chances that will actually improve anything? I remember some patients having revisions done but you never see or hear from them after they go home, don’t know the final outcomes. I wish you as much comfort as possible in teh meantime. Hope your dinner with your daughter was nice.

Mick, I agree that we should leave our happy little group as it is at least for now,
YB snapped a picture of that crazy horse last night & showed it around to a few Amish guys this morning. They recognized the horse & said it’s a field horse, definitely not road worthy so I don’t know why the driver took him out. The buggies have to follow all the road rules, same as we do, stop signs, red lights, etc. they never exceed the speed limit - never!!!! We have no choice but to pass them unless we have all day with nothing to do haha! CONGRATS. To Julie as well on her 5 years!!! We are all winners here!

Wags, my new computer is all set up (except the printer), software is downloaded so I am ready to go into learning mode!!! We’ll see how long it takes this aging brain to learn some new tricks. I hope your weekend is relaxing & Dad is calm.

Cyn, I tend to be a creature of habit primarily because it relieves me from having to actually remember things. I kind of operate repeat mode Lol
Years I ago I posted early in the mornings but now the early evening fits best for whatever reason. How’s things going with the elder these days? Is she staying active &mobile? I have so many cooking methods in my kitchen but don’t always feel like actually cooking. The latest is the Cuisinart air fryer convection oven. I might cook enough chicken to last for several days then just add salad or veggies from day to day. It’s all I feel like doing these days, what can I say? Take care of you too

Hello to Pie, hope you’re OK in the heat!
Hello to everyone else stopping in & wishing us all a nice night!

Mae all - long day, dealing with mold on the bathroom ceiling (very bad situation) and a spurious management approach to the fix. Got kind of downhearted, but I?m sure it will work out somehow.
Elder is fine. I don?t usually go in the evenings, her granddaughter is:supposed to do that, but she?s out of town, so I went (and cooked, slo!). All fine, and it hit me out if my potentially mold-ridden apartment.

Wishing all well - hoping family issues are going okay for all -

Best wishes,
TG

Slo - happy 5-year sober-versary! I was born a few years after Mary Poppins came out, and I'm not really sure whether I ever saw it in a theater (maybe when it was re-released??) but def watched the video many times and I knew all the songs. It's truly a fantastic movie - I actually think I might have to watch it again! I love a few of the songs where they dance, like the chimney sweeps.

Lav - congrats on getting the computer set up and software all loaded. I bet you'll learn the things you need to learn just fine cuz you WANT to do this.

Mick - seems like you work pretty hard! Yes, I live in the western U.S. and we have horrible high fire risk and bad forest fires every year, so planning vacations in the mountains can be difficult but not impossible, and that's our favorite general destination so we're watching things carefully.

TG - ugh, so sorry to hear about the mold problem. That is serious stuff and I'm glad you're on top of getting it fixed.

Pretty tired from a very busy week of teaching so I'm going to hit the hay now but wishing you all happy weekends and I'll catch you tomorrow!

Re: 16th July

mae all,how are we doing today then?hope all is well.It is hammering down with rain today,,hasnt let up all night or morning .Was supposed to have got a ton of topsoil delivered yesterday, but got a message last night to say that the wagon had broken down and they would deliver it today.Frustrating when people dont do as they say they will,or moreso when they cant be bothered to let you know.Even I wont be putting soil in this morning unless the rain goes .This time next week we will be in Menorca.

hiya Wags ,how are you doing?hope all is well today.Mary Poppins was released 23 Dec 1964..so yep I was around for the original!there are so many individual scenes I recall from it...Chi chiminee..feed the birds, step in time etc.Yes I work hard ,always have ,but like everyone else there are times when I like to just sit and read ,watch telly chill out ....but after a while I get bored!!!
hope you have a good weekend

hiya teegee ...firstly ..keep a positive approach even when you feel down ..thats easy for me to say I know ,I get down and have to kick myself out of it ,but whether you are smiling ,laughing ,or crying ,the mould will still be there ,...that is the basics of it .Im not being critical,we would all be the same .its turning the feelings into a positive action ..have you managed to find out where it is coming from?good luck ,and hope you have a nice weekend .

hiya slo...how are you doing? congrats on your up and coming 5 years ..despite the changes in life you have had ...you have done well ...so your LCL is ok...I presume by the hardware they mean the knee joint itself?when are they going to have a look at that? what are you up to this weekend?no travelling or children?whatever you do....have a good weekend .

hiya Lav ,how are tyou doing? hope all is good .As for computers printers etc...I cant even change the cartridges in the printer ..Julie had to do it to print the boarding tickets out for our flights..I didnt know horses had to be roadworthy ..I presume by that they mean being used to the road etc ..Now as for the air fryer ..yep this thread sold me that one..We use ours almost daily ,chicken ,chips salad ....anything .and the fact it is wholesome food without fats etc is even better. We take ours away in the van with us too.Whoever invented that was one smart cookie !I got some end of season plants for the garden..one of them is a shrub called hotlips salvia..the blooms are really nice ..red and white .

by Francis Neer.

So my friend said she'd got a job in a bowling alley.
I said: "Tenpin?"
She said: "No, it's permanent".

I’m looking to sell all my glove puppets.
A collector phoned and offered me ?200 to take them off my hands...

I left my last girlfriend because she wouldn't stop counting.
I often wonder what she's up to now!

Teacher: "Johnny, can you use the word “gruesome” in a sentence?"
Johnny: "Yes ma’am, I used to be shorter, then I gruesome."

Anyone looking for some work ?
Need 8 people to work at a major event on the 29th,30th & 31st of Feb.
8 hours per day,
?400 per day.
?1200 for the 3 days.
Might be a late finish on some nights . Got transport to and from the event. You get your hotel paid.
No idiots !!

My neighbour knocked on my door wearing a see through negligee asking to borrow a cup of sugar! Then winked at me and said I can come in for a coffee and smiled at me!
I said fk off Steve! I’ve got to go to work!!

My blonde wife called me at work and said she can't find her glasses, so I told her to use her contacts.
She rang me back an hour later to say she had called everyone in her phone and none of them knew where they were either.

MAE All,
High fives to Slo and Julie for their AF milestones!

TG, what is the source of the mold in your home, if you know?

Unusually busy week in Rescue with 3 new intakes. Two from the city shelter, and 1 owner surrender. I help with transport coordination and microchip registrations mostly, but am up for the inevitable odds and ends of bringing a living creature into care.

Have acclimated to the summer heat, so find it not such a big deal anymore. The lack of rain is worrisome; greatly appreciate neighbors who are pitching in to help water.

Such a fine, fine group this is. Small but mighty! Love y?all :heartbeat:

Hey all,

Nice day here, just as promised. Sorry Pie!
I have spent the day doing a little of everything & not really finishing much haha! It really doesn’t matter much

Pie, glad to hear you have done OK in that heat, not sure if I could do that.
I have one more feral kitten who needs a permanent home & I’m considering looking for a person willing to take my almost 10 month old kitten. He’s grown quite large & isn’t always nice to me. He’s been neutered, hopefully he will settle down. You are so nice to help the animals

Mick, that salvia is so unusual looking, wow.
Played around with the new software a bit this afternoon, starting to make sense, I think. I can wait for the printer, not a big deal.
So did you punch your neighbor Steve in the face or what??? HA HA

Wags, I hope this weekend has started off quietly for you
Do you think maybe a trip to the coast might be better choice this year? I’d be afraid to be up in the mountains during fire season too!

Cyn, sorry about the mold situation, ugh. Is the ceiling fan working OK? Usually that’s enough to keep things dry in the bathroom. Maybe the excessive heat this summer has something to do with the mold growth. Hope they get it squared away quickly for you. Try not to get into worry mode

Slo, CONGRATS on your 5 year AF anniversary!! I remember feeling very accomplished at that point & just knew I could continue on without any problems. Have you treated yourself to a little something nice? You definitely should. Hope the knee is cooperating.

PQ, hope your weekend is going well.

Hello to the rest of the crew & hoping we all have a nice night!

Re: 16th July

Well, I wrote this yesterday and apparently somehow failed to post it:

Slo, I somehow missed your re-birth date! When is the actual day? Anyway -- congratulations! Some of the things you've experienced (and continue to deal with) would have been too much if you hadn't been so committed to living the life you want and deserve. I hope you are as proud of yourself as we are of you .

It is overnight babysitting for 2 under-the-weather boys for me. One somehow hurt his hip and the other, who like me cannot eat gluten, apparently got into it at camp this week and is suffering some explosive consequences :egad:

----------------
Well, the overnight went fine. Both boys seemed to be doing better from their ailments by evening. Now we're into the morning routine which involves me being a short-order cook. I rarely eat breakfast before 10 or 11 am so this 6:30 business seems a little early for cooking!

Mold sounds like a tough problem. I know it would get my allergies going. My current problem is an invasion of tiny ants in the kitchen. GROSS.

Wags, my editing involves getting the papers into the general format of a science publication, checking experimental design and analysis, rewriting to be clear and concise, and checking the internal consistency of the paper (text vs abstract vs data presented in tables and figures). I generally make a PDF file and edit that using Adobe Acrobat for the first round or so and later, when changes generally are cosmetic, tracking changes in Word works pretty well. I've been enjoying this project - similar to my previous job but with little to no pressure!

I hope all of you are having a great weekend! NS
