23rd July ,

mae all...how are we doing? hope all is well.Soil delivery got cancelled again yesterday..it was far too wet ..delivery first thing on Monday.I t hasnt stopped raining since Friday ,We are away next AFriday ,so I havent really got a lot of time to get the dirt in the ground .

20230722_170204.jpg

heres what Im up to ..the edging stones are the height the stones originally were ....thats what Ive dug out .the back level will be filled with soil to the height of the stones..that will give me a level flat top bed.then below that from the top of the edging stones soil will slope down to the edge of the grass ...that way I will have 2 beds plus will stop the rain washing away the soil.that cable I dug out is a redundant tv cable .

hiya wags ,how are you doing today? have things slowed down for you?hope so mate ...you take care .

hiya Lav ,nice pics ..could do with some of that weather to get this lot done ..So you and the kitten dont get on? oh dear ...hope you find a home for her/him soon .Never punched him ...but def never got the sugar!!!!ha ha .

hiya pie ,how are you doing?glad all is doing good with the "lose the booze" campaign, well done with the rescues too.You take care and have a good weekend .

hiya teegee, ppqp,sf,sam ,slo, and everyone else .....hope all is on track for you

Re: 23rd July ,

Sunday greetings everyone,

I had a lunch date with two old friends today which was nice! The weather is still quite nice for late July. We will be back into the extreme heat & humidity in just a day or two of course.

Mick, good luck with the garden project, better you than me haha! I would be too crippled digging dirt & stone & hauling it around. Those days are gone for me. I actually need to get outside & do some watering before the day is over. It’s the least I can do for the happy lilies

NS, I saw your post on the old thread. Hope those grands are feeling better today

Wags, hope you’re working in a little rest here & There. We’re no good to anyone when we’re exhausted. This I know from personal experience Lol

Cyn, I don’t imagine the management has people covering the premises over the weekend but I hope you get the mold problem resolved asap! Has anyone else in your building made a complaint?

PQ, hope your weekend has been fabulous.

Slo, hello to you!

Pie, how’s things in hot TX?

Hello to all & wishing everyone a nice night!

Re: 23rd July ,

Checking in late:

I guess I did treat myself for my 5- year AF anniversary (7/22), and purchased a pricey self-development intensive seminar that I attended online all weekend: Dr. John DeMartini’s ‘Breakthrough Experience”. I got a number of good things out of it. That guy doesn’t drink alcohol nor use caffeine nor ingest sugar!
Next is Wag’s sober-versary!

Oh, I’m so sorry about the mold, TG. That’s my nightmare. Just so they get on it and replace that ceiling!

Well, that big boy kitty is still young yet (your little Daisy who turned out to be a boy!), so I hope you can re-home him, Lav. Maybe someone would take both, so they could be company for each other.
So great that you had a lunch date this Sunday!

Hopefully the boys were easier or you, NS, since they were under the weather.
I have Huxley tomorrow, and he is heartbroken and screaming inconsolably, since his mother cut him off from the boobs so she can be ready to start the process of starting fertility treatments again in 3 months. I think Grandma will take him out for pancakes for breakfast.

That’s a big hole to fill, Mick! Now I remember a photo from when the stones were there.

It’s an early morning tomorrow, so I will say good night!
Once a pickle, never a cucumber again.

Mae all -
Sober shout-out to all, and congrats on the Anniversaries!

Mick, that is a huge project you have on your hands... best of luck, and I hope you will not be too achey for your trip!. Thx for being the one who knows all the dates of things... yes, that would be about right... I would have been 8 when Mary Poppins launched... I remember that I had a Mary Poppins' birthday party that year.

Lav, sorry about the little/adolescent cat... he has kind of always been a terror, right? I hope it works out. Congrats on getting started with the new computer stuff... brave girl!

SLO - happy belated sober-versary! Goodness, daughter is going for another baby already? Sounds like you'd better keep your grandmother energy all up to snuff! Sorry about the knee... good luck.

Wags - I'm sorry that these last weather years have been so hard for the mountain areas in the west... I was in Tahoe 2 years ago when the fires were moving right up the lakeshore - very frightening... I hope nothing like that goes on near you this summer...

NS - well, you may think your work is straightforward, but sheesh, that sounds very complicated to me! Congrats!

PPQ - hoping that you got some good rest and can be ready for the week... any news on the car front?

Pie - glad you have some help with the watering... and really glad you can cope with the heat! Good for you!

Hello Kensho, Sam, and any others dropping by...

RE; mold. It is in the bathroom ceiling. There was a leak in the apartment above me, which was fixed. Then finally they were about to send a paint contractor, and I noticed more "sagging" and some slivers opening up and alerted management. I covered the area with plastic and sealed it with green tape to avoid it falling apart. Slowly I've introduced air to the area so that it could dry and be ready for the contractors, but of course, some of the area fell down anyway. I cleaned it up with vinegar (when we lived in CT I think you all remember that I had a big mold project on cement walls in a basement... I learned then that vinegar was the most effective.) So, I cleaned it all up and shut the door. Lucky that I have my elder friends where I can hide out. I did sleep in the apartment last night, and didn't have any noticeable bad effects from anything, so maybe just having the paint contractors in will be okay. But there has been black mold discovered in other floors in this building, so there is cause for concern. And now that it's dry, those mold spores will go everywhere if the painter cuts it open and just paints over it. I contacted a mold evaluator, but I would have to get management's permission for him to come evaluate... and sadly, they management is quite hostile; not really into solving problems rationally. So, not sure what I should do. One thing is clear - ignoring the situation will not work. One way or another, something will happen, and we'll see how it goes... Sorry for the long-winded response to your questions! Eventually all will work out...

Hoping all are well,
TG

Re: 23rd July ,

Mae everyone!

Seems like late July was a popular time to quit drinking over the past many years since so many of us are having our sober-versaries. Mine is tomorrow and I'll be turning 7. One of the top 5 best decisions of my entire life for sure. Even though the Newbies Nest is empty and quiet right now, I'll forever be grateful it was active when I needed it and I know numerous others feel the same.

Mick, sorry about the soil delay again... I hope you're able to get going again soon, and as TG said I also hope you aren't too achy for your upcoming trip.

Lav, sorry things aren't working out so well with your young male cat. I don't know much about cats, especially boy cats, so I have no ideas of anything that might help. Rehoming him might be best if you can find a great new home and family.

SLO - your weekend event sounds pretty amazing. Are there any "best" take-aways you'd be comfortable sharing with us?

NS - your work sounds very interesting. Are the papers for a particular science journal? Hope your time with grandsons wrapped up smoothly after they started feeling better.

TG - mold is a nightmare! I hope your ceiling turns out to just need painting, but it's good you're being cautious and it sounds like you know what to do and look for.

My wife and I visited my dad today and it was a good easy visit. I talked with his Dr about having a psych consult and she's going to see what she thinks next time she meets with my dad but was amenable to the idea so we'll probably proceed.

I've got just one tutoring session tomorrow morning and then the rest of the day off!

Hellos and waves to PQ, Pi, Kensho, Sam, and anyone else I've missed.

Hi Everyone! Sounds like people are busy enjoying sober life.

Mick, that's quite the project you have going! Nothing more pleasant than a well landscaped yard to be in. We have some grand dreams of our own, but it may be awhile. I would need much more free time to manage the weeds and pests... My family of 4 still sits down together for most dinners, and during weekends when the kids aren't out. It keeps us talking and knowing what everyone else is up to. Connection in a small space is helpful.

Wags, I hope the consult happens and helps! 7 years... will you celebrate?

Slo, HAPPY 5 YEARS!! This felt like a big one for me just last December... way to change your life and thrive! Sorry you're still having such problems with your knee. Sounds like you may be getting some answers?

Hi to everyone else that I missed!

I am feeling tired this Monday morning. Glad I am not a drinker. Off to a busy week!

Greetings everyone,

Started out the day with heavy rain then it went to a sunny, hot & humid afternoon. Whiplash weather, honestly haha!

Mick, I really like the two tiered look in. The garden. That was a great idea

Kensho, good to see you. I hope your week goes well. We are a grateful bunch of nondrinkers here!!

Wags, Happy 7th AF anniversary to you!!!!
I just can’t imagine us being any other way now, bet you can’t either. Hope your day was nice!
I think I am going to ask my daughter to help find a home for this teenage cat, Lol. He’s not really a good cat for someone my age so to speak & she has loads of friends.

Slo, your weekend seminar sounded good. I’ve done a lot of those sort of things & always learn something I need to know.
Hope your pancake breakfast with Huxley was fun.

Cyn, keeping my fingers crossed for yo with the mold situation. I’m thinking the management folks should receive a phone call from a lawyer’s office reminding them of their responsibilities to the residents. So many people just don’t want to do their jobs it seems. I’m not good with that!!
Hope your day was good.

PQ, how are you? Everything OK?

Hello to Pie, Sam & anyone else popping in later.
Have a nice night all.

MAE ALL...

Sorry for MIA but have just now got home. The dog sitting on Friday went fine. We're under a heat warning so basically spent the day indoors. Saturday my SIL unexpectedly showed up and I headed up to Sylvan Lake with her. Spent most of Sunday on the lake until we couldn't take the heat anymore. It was great to catch up with her. Going to pop some burgers on the BBQ and make my son cook them, it's way too hot out there for me.

Just wanted to check in, will read back as soon as I can. Have a good night all....:smile:PPQP

Mae all -

Sounds like everything is chugging along... congrats Wags on 7 years tomorrow!! It is very inspiring to see all the days and years pile up - thinking of our beginnings those years ago. I've been with Lav since the first day, I think. Then we moved over to Mick's corner and were happily adopted there...I still miss Det and Pauly - but it is always nice to see Sam.

Mick, so your idea of relaxing after all that work is to go play U2 monopoly? Wow. I agree with Lav - love the 2-tier idea. Maybe the garden fairies will finish is all up for you?!

Lav, the plan for young cat to go to a different home sounds good - so glad your daughter is so socially/pet connected! Crazy weather here too - woke up to huge lightening storm, no rain, then the heat wave started... sounds like we're in it for a handful of days at least. I'm keeping my apartment at 80 - trying to conserve a little power if possible.

Wags, I think you said that you had a good visit with your dad? I hope so... any good moments are welcome. (and thanks for correcting "achey"! I couldn't decide how to write that... now I know )

PPQ - glad that you got the boys to do the grilling! (And a little lake time with your SIL...)

SLO and Pie, I hope all is well...

Kensho, good to see you! Sounds like a very busy household - thx for your update...

So..., I messaged the office through the "official" channels that the ceiling was ready for the worker... I got a message back telling me that they were happy to say that "the work has been completed". Hmmmm, well, not really, like NOT at all... I will have to go into the office tomorrow and straighten it all out... I hesitate, because the people that work there (except the head man) are all just plain mean. It really takes a lot for me to lose my temper (I mean A LOT), but some of those personalities just send me off the deep end. I'll have to do a special meditation. Speaking of which, I didn't know (though it makes sense) that meditation raises dopamine levels in the body. Another reason not to skip my daily dose!

Wishing all well, apologies if I missed someone -

Shout out to Lavande and NoSugar in particular as two of the most helpful and welcoming people when I needed it the most.

TG - Lol I didn't even notice the different spelling of achy/achey. I actually think both are commonly used! I'm so sorry you're dealing with such ridiculousness from the office people. I'm like you in that it takes a TON for me to lose my temper but I can see why you'd be close to that in this situation. Sending you zen energy for that conversation.

Kensho - I'm impressed your family all sits down to dinners together. That's wonderful!

PQ - sounds like the heat is really hitting your area. I hope it passes soon and that your burgers (grilled by son!) were tasty.

hiya Ns how are you doing?hope all is well with you.Yes I agree ,initially when I first did the front garden it looked good ,but the trouble wasto get that look I had to put in gravel to a depth of about 6 inches in an all over undulation, which meant I couldnt put any plants in properly,so it never looked like a "proper " bed .hopefully as they mature in this format I can get the depth and variety .How are things with you? hope all is well.

hiya teegee...no garden fairies turned up...so its down to me .Im trying to comprehend your post about the workers.....have I got this right ? you phoned to say it was prepped for them...and they replied with a message to say that they were happy to say the job had been done??are they for real?Best of luck with it this morning.

hiya Lav ,how are you doing? all good ..The cat has lots of friends ...or your daughter?????ha ha .last night looking over the fields I watched the deer playing ,then from nowhere in the trees ,a murder of crows took off in a serious hurry...followed closely by an owl..it looked like a tawny but had a massive wingspan. Then I watched the lapwings ,and the Canadian geese returned to the pond up the road ,as did the heron.Shorthorns in the top field and horses in the main one ...really great to see.Is your machine up and running again?hope you have a great day .

Happy #7, Wags  I'm so glad you're sticking around and making this quit stick!!

PQ, it is such a surprise to me how hot it gets in Canada. I guess I always just assumed that being north, the whole country generally was cooler. Your unexpected get-away sounds fun.

Our heat is returning this week. I hate AC but I think I'm going to have to cave in and turn it on. I'm having some friends over for dinner tomorrow night and I was hoping to use a recently remodeled screen porch but it might be too hot for that.

I had dinner with another friend last night. Several years ago she divorced her alcoholic husband. She shared that now both of her sons are struggling with it. One even has severe neuropathy which he attributes to anything other than booze. Both deny that they have problems but are destroying themselves and everyone around them. It is so sad and reminds me how fortunate all of us are.

Hi to all,

Thank you for sharing your friend’s story, NS. It sure speaks to the epigenetic nature of alcohol addiction. It reminds me of my cousin: marries and later divorces a drinking guy with heavy-drinking parents; and the fallout is that she’s now dealing with the alcoholism of 2 of her 3 children!
She, along with other family members, recently filed a “chapter 51” (?) to have her son, like, committed to an alcohol rehab place or halfway house or something, but all that happened was they sentenced him to 9 hours a week of outpatient classes; and he’s already busy skipping out on those!
Once a pickle, never a cucumber again.
