how to start moderating???

:hhi my name is lizzie and i am have been in and out of this site for several years. i feel like right now it is essential that i do something. two months ago i tried to stop drinking, 3 weeks in a row, 3 separate times cold turkey. i had tried stopping drinking many times before cold turkey, but never that many times in a row so fast. anyway i had a grand mal seizure and i was in the hospital for 3 days. i managed to get 12 days alcohol free but then started drinking again. i am so sorry i did this. it was a big mistake. now i want to get sober again but i know i have to taper off or risk a seizure. i find this so hard to do, i guess because i am an addict. well any thoughts are welcome. thanks for listening.

Hi Lizzie,
I don't post very often in the moderation threads but you caught my eye with the seizure. Very scary for you indeed, I'm so glad you got through it.

I have to ask are you talking about tapering off your drinking so it's safe to stop without serious withdrawals or learn how to control you're drinking to 2 or 3 drinks a couple of times a week.

Hi there,

I have modding in the past successfully for over a year and then let my guard down. Right now I am seriously modding again, I have had half hearted attempts that ended in me bingeing again. I have made a vow to myself to never be hungover again.....and am now on my mod journey for the rest of my life.

The only advice I can give is to have a good stretch of AF time under your belt first. I just completed almost four months AF and like I said was half hearted about modding at first and got drunk - I have picked myself up and am seriously working the mod route.

My second bit of advice is to be 100 % committed to being a mod drinker. Stick to your plan, it will be challenging at times but sooooooooooo much better than being hungover and ashamed. I know it's early in my current mod plan, but I have done it before so my words do come from experience.

Hi Lizzie,
For a very heavy drinker, initial withdrawal from alcohol can be medically dangerous and should be monitored in a safe environment where trained professionals can respond quickly and appropriately. If you do not have the funds or ability to go to a detox center or facility to help you, then you do need to taper off and not go cold turkey.
