Ruck ? a ruck occurs when one or more players from each team are in contact with each other with the ball on the ground between them. There is no ruck unless at least two players (one player from each team) are on their feet with the ball on the ground between them.
Once a ruck has formed players may only use their feet to play the ball until it emerges from the ruck. Only a player on his feet may play the ball while it is in a ruck.
All players forming, joining or taking part in a ruck must have their heads and shoulders no lower than their hips. A player joining a ruck must do so from behind the foot of the hindmost team mate in that ruck and may only join behind or alongside that team-mate. The arriving player must also join by passing ?through the gate?. The gateposts are imaginary vertical lines drawn from the head and feet of the tackled player lying on the ground. If the tackled player is lying parallel to the goal-lines that makes a bigger gate available than if he is lying parallel to the touchlines.
The arriving player must also bind on to a team-mate with at least one arm around the body of that team mate using the whole arm. If he joins the ruck from his opponents side or in front of his hindmost team mate, he is offside. Once a ruck has formed the offside line for each team is a line parallel to the goal line running through the back foot of the hindmost player in the ruck. Any player not in the ruck must stay behind this imaginary line until the ball has emerged from the ruck.
A player must not wilfully kneel or fall in a ruck, collapse or jump on top of a ruck. This is dangerous play. For any infringement of these laws a penalty kick will be awarded to the non-offending team at the place of the infringement.
A ruck ends when the ball comes out of the ruck or is over the goal-line. The ball is out of the ruck when it is beyond the back foot of the hindmost player in the ruck or no part of that player?s body is directly over the ball, or the acting scrum-half clearly has his hands on the ball.
Problems often occur when players are trying to free up a ball trapped in a ruck with their feet. Referees and coaches have agreed that feet on bodies in a vertical motion (stamping) is unacceptable and will be penalised. If a player?s feet are moving backwards (towards his own goal-line) and he is near to and clearly trying to free the ball, that is normally acceptable even if contact is made with an opponents body in the process. However, undue violence will not be tolerated.

For any breach of these laws a penalty will be awarded to the non-offending team at the place of the infringement.
