    liver function and blood pressure

hi does anybody have any research or personal experience of improving liver fundtion and /or blood pressure since either abstaining or reducing alcohol??

this is an area that has led me to want to cut down on the booze and getting encouragement from you guys on good results may help to spur me and others on.

I,ve never been told i have a damaged liver...but the guilt sets me thinking it cant be looking too good.

Aslo elevated blood pressure for last year...refused to take pills yet..as wondered if this "lifestyle change"" of greatly reducing booze will really have an impact??????onday 17 AF

please anybody let me know if you have had an improvement in these areas.

      Cassy,

There is some evidence that cutting down on alcohol reduces blood pressure.
But I do not think it makes a dramatic difference (a few points difference).

I believe the biggest impact on blood pressure is to be had by reducing weight and exercising - but only if you are overweight and sedentary already.

Last time I had a checkup I was told I had highish BP (subsequent checks proved I was OK) but the conversation went like:

You are obviously not overweight, do you exercise?
      Yep - every day!
Oh - do you add salt at the table or cook with salt?
      No - niether!
      Do you smoke?
      NO
      Do you drink alcohol?
      Yes!
Oh thank god for that - at least that is something you can try!
Try reducing the amount of alcohol you drink - it may help bring your BP down.

LOL - never heard of a doc being happy that someone drank!
Mind you - I didn't tell her quite how much I drank!!

        liver help

I put myself on a selection of supplements including magnesium, slow release vit c and Vitamin B Complex but I also took Star Flower and Milk Thistle...... oh and on top of this I took sanatogen gold.. i did not have liver problems but was feeling malnourished due to my drinking and found i needed to replenish most of the nutrients i had lost with these supplements... This is not medical advise as supplements can be harmful if you take too much but here's the info......

GLA (gamma linolenic acid) can prevent and repair liver damage rapidly- (found in Star Flower 500mg)
Silymarin; a nutrient I haven't mentioned before, has an astounding effect on the liver. This substance, also known as milk thistle extract, speeds liver regeneration. Studies with patients who have liver disease have shown that elevated liver readings decreased significantly only among those treated with silymarin. And a study of patients with alcoholic cirrhosis of the liver found a significantly higher survival rate among those receiving silymarin. In addition, silymarin acts as a free radical scavenger in the liver-it attacks and destroys harmful free radical molecules that can induce disease and promote aging.
Carnitine helps the liver oxidize the heavy fatty-acid load produced by drinking.
Substances called Lipotropic Factors, which contain methionine, choline, and inositol, can rid the liver of the fat accumulated during years of alcohol abuse. (Healthy liver cells can regenerate indefinitely, but with continued alcohol abuse, cells fill with fat and die.) At HRC we use the Bio-Recovery liver Repair Formula that incorporates all of the above substances.

            liver function and blood pressure

thank you all. I take B vitamin supplements and milk thistle.. I havent had any liver problems as yet...just live with the guilt of what i ahve done to my liver over the years.

i attend kep fit once a wek and do long walks a few times a week. about 7 -10 1ls over weight only and eat well....of course when you drink alcohol it ravages the body and brain... i feel i need to do some repair work!!! Day 19 alcohol free today.

hope to be a moderator but not ready to try that yet...because if that doesnt work i know its going to be a long road to complete abstinence and unravelling the reasons why i cant say "never again"

good luck and thanks to you people who took time to reply
