    My NEW Story Starts Here...

Thank you j-vo for your kind words!! I feel like a completely different person than I was one short year ago.

Ceprise, glad to hear that the procedure went smoothly. Sounds like you have a good plan for the dinner party.

As far as telling people, I think we each have to find our own way in our own time. One thing I will say from my personal experience is that I struggled a very long time AND KEPT DRINKING until I was ready to tell someone in my real life. For me, that first someone I spoke with about my alcoholism was my husband. I told him I was an alcoholic (of course he already knew this all too well) and I told him about MWO and the plan, and how I planned to implement the plan. The nature of my relationship with him, combined with the nature of my thinking is such that if I DIDN'T tell him (which I did not for 11 years) then I wasn't really serious about fixing the alcohol problem. And believe me, looking back, there were many promises to myself that were shattered to smithereens and I realize now that I didn't really mean it, even to myself if I wasn't willing to share with him.

This stuff all gets very heavy, but IMO it's important that we really examine our thinking patterns and behaviours. Us alkies are very clever at getting our fixes, and keeping the party alive. I was very quick to tell lie after lie after lie to others, and also to myself. It's great to be living about a gazillion times more honestly now.

CS I understand what you are saying about the back lash of telling people you quit, then relapsing, then having egg on your face. I agree it is important to really consider carefully what you say to who, and when. At this stage I am grateful to just say "I'm not drinking today" to anyone who might wonder about it. AA has helped me greatly over the last 3 months to dig into my alcoholic thinking and understand it better. Nobody knows an alcoholic like an alcoholic! I love being around people who have years and years of experience with sobriety. I'm sure that 20 or 30 years from now MWO will have that too.

I had a talk with Mr. Doggy last night about something very deep and dark that we had never discussed before. In my final few years of alcoholic level drinking, I was so desparate and depressed that I often had suicidal thoughts. It actually went as far as the planning stages. After my back surgery several years ago, I saved up the muscle relaxers and pain killers that I didn't use (I've always been very sparing with that stuff as I knew I didn't need another addiction!). I would get the refills and save those, and get appropriate new prescriptions from the doctor and fill those. I had quite a stash going. I believe more than enough to get the job done. I was close enough a few time to start swallowing them. Thankfully I chickened out before I swallowed enough to kill myself or require medical attention on those occassions.

The reason I even was thinking about this and decided to share has to do with the tumor I have (Parathyroid - there is a thread about it in the holistic healing section) and my fear that my body is in such a state to be creating abnormal cells, even assuming this one is benign as most of them are. Now I'm fighting to live a healthy life. I'm reading like crazy and looking at detoxification programs (i.e. Far Infrared Sauna combined with some diet tweaks and a supplement detox program - along with my doctor). We're considering investing in a negative ion / alkaline water purifier and our own sauna for the house.

It just made me think....WOW what a change in thought patterns from suicide to living as healthfully as possible. I just hadn't really put those pieces together before. (well, I've never talked to Mr. D about suicidal thoughts before)

Anyway....for those of you who are just starting out on this journey and/or still strugging to string together some AF time, keep after it. Don't give up. Don't be afraid to be willing to try ANYTHING to get sober. It is so worth it. It's life and death. Sometimes I get worried about small stuff like feeling some discomfort at a business social event when others are drinking while I simply cannot. I'll feel a bit pouty. In those moments I MUST REMEMBER that for me, drinking alcohol IS a matter of life and death.

Well, I haven't been posting as much here recently about my own journey, but I hope to come up with a doozy for my upcoming one year anniversary. I am SO excited about it! I can't wait. While this is a one day at a time journey.....for some reason THAT day will feel huge.

OH - I should probably mention that on Thursday this past week I reached my 300th Curves workout!!! I'm still figuring out maintenance, but today I am only 1 pound over my goal weight range and working hard to get it back under 150. I know what I have to do. It's been a good week (was almost 3 pounds up on Monday!) of doing it. I will do it next week too.

    Be strong everyone!

DG- I have a FAR infrared sauna and used it pretty much daily when I was detoxing from nicotine and alcohol. I would be interested in any information you might have about utilizing one. My body seems to go in cycles of fatigue/normalcy. I'm hoping once I get my hormones balanced (and adrenals working) my energy levels should increase. I have the vitamix, and love it--when I'm not too tired to get up and use the thing!!

          Back in the Hospital

I've been admitted to the hospital. I have small bowel obstruction caused by a loop out of an abdominal hernia. The dinner I attended on Saturday got stuck and caused sever pain on Sunday morning. I am now NPO, no food or drink by mouth until further notice.

So no topomax or supplements. I do have the Hypno CDs and have been listening to them to go to sleep. So I'm going to need to get a procedure to re-start topomax.

I'm glad that I went AF for two weeks before this happened. At least I don't have that also to fight. Other than the pain in my gut, I feel good. I am on Dilaudid for pain. I was taking it every 2.5 hours when admitted, but now I am going over 6 hours before needing pain relief again.

The hope is that the obstruction will eventually dissolve. It seems to be doing this. Surgery to repair the hernias will be done before I go home.

So keep me in your prayers. Having this Community is very important to me.

          16 days AF.

ceprise, I hope everything goes smoothly and this obstruction resolves quickly. I hope the hernia surgery goes smoothly. When emergency situations like this occur, I always find myself especially grateful to be sober. Makes it much less complicated to deal with all the way around.

              Good healing vibes to you!

Thanks DG your support means a lot to me. Is that a picture of your dog on your avatar? It is so cute - what breed is it? I have a Ridgeback/Kelpie cross who is gorgeous but I have always wanted a beagle...are you a breeder?

Hi again Luba! Yes that is one of our doggies - that's Momma's Boy Buck. Gotta love a happy beagle but man are they LOUD. We're not breeders - just lovers. We also have a mutt and 2 German Shepherds. My husband does Schutzhund training with one of the Shepherds which is an interesting breed test / sport.

DG - I was referred to your postings through another thread. WOW! I repeat, WOW! Just the thoughtful and effective approach I've been needing to learn more about. I missed some details on your thyroid and hormone issues. My drinking and weight gain have kept me from going to the doctor. I'm 5 days AF with very little discomfort or cravings. Aware of extra time I've given myself to work on health and fitness, but I'm going to need to find an exercise program I can look forward to. Best wishes as you continue this remarkable journey.

                          My NEW Story Starts Here...

Lemonhead thank you for your post and best of strength to you on your own journey. Getting booze out of my life is tied for "best thing I ever did for myself" with getting nicotine out of my life. (well, and marrying Mr. Doggy!) So many other things become possible in life when we cut off the balls and chains.

Well, today marks one year of continuous sobriety for me. I have been so excited about reaching this milestone. And LOL, so far it feels pretty much like another day! But my days are so good now. Even though business is still sucking the big one with this economy and my Dad is sick and getting sicker by the day and there is ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS something to "worry" about if I focus on that, I'm happy. I find myself randomly smiling and just getting a wave of contented feeling that comes over me seemingly out of nowhere. I can think clearly. I can make decisions that are not clouded by thoughts of my next drink. I AM FREE.

I don't spend a lot of time wallowing around in my ugly past. LOL - I prefer to wallow around in a future of my own design that hasn't happened yet, but man are people pissing me off! That is a problem I am working on - it's so important to stay in today a little more than I do. But I digress. If I COULD go back in my life and change a few things, here are some things I would do differently:

                          1. I have known in my heart for years and years that I am an alcoholic. I did not want to admit that. I told myself I didn't want to admit it because of the "stigma." That wasn't really true. The bottom line truth is that I knew when I admitted being an alcoholic, the party would have to be over. No more drinking or if I did, disgust. Well, since I knew the truth deep down in my heart anyway, I still had the disgust with myself. I was just BY myself with my self-loathing and disgust. Alone. Lonely in a crowded room. Facing the truth about my alcoholism and deciding to take REAL action was the hardest part. I wish I had done it years ago.

                          2. I will do anything to stay sober. Anything. It's my number one priority. I am useless as a wife, friend, daughter, business partner, etc. when I am drinking. My sobriety is precious to me and I'm determined to NEVER forget that. If that means checking in at MWO 100 times a day and also attending 6 AA meetings, that's what I'll do. I wish I had been willing to DO WHATEVER IT TAKES a long time ago.

                          3. I know that I avoided AA like that black plague mainly because it is an abstinence based program that is FILLED with truth, at least for this alcoholic. Part of why I kept saying "AA is not for me!" is because in my heart, I didn't want to accept that the party was over - I CANNOT safely drink alcohol ever. I am loving the self discovery process that I am finding in AA. Is every meeting nervana? No. (I don't think I know how to spell nervana either!) Do I like everyone I encounter? No. Are there aspects of the AA program that make me uncomfortable? Yes - but that's usually because I have come up against an idea that I need to sort out anyway. Around that table we are all equals during the meetings. Believe it or not, I harbor a lot of insecurities of my own deep down inside. That hour of equality is helping me figure out what other dragons are still living inside of me waiting to be slain.

If you are laying in bed awake in the middle of the night (after waking up from a pass out) crying about the sad state of your life and alcohol's role in it, then it's probably time to STOP DRINKING. If you cry and beg a God you're not even sure you believe in to take this alcohol desire away from you, then it's time to STOP DRINKING. If you tell yourself day after day that you won't drink today, but then once again you do, it's time to STOP DRINKING. If you tell yourself you will have only 2 drinks at the party, but once again you get shit faced, then it's time to STOP DRINKING. If you can't control your alcohol consumption, then stop trying to moderate it. Why do I believe these things? If you've read this thread you know it's because that was the viscious circle of my life for years and years and years.

STOP DRINKING! YOUR FREEDOM IS WORTH IT!!!!

Well, how is that for a digustingly preachy one year ramble? I think it's time I get my humble back and get off my :soapbox2:

I am so grateful that I found My Way Out in July of 2007. I suppose the mixture of good and bad decisions between July 11, 2007 and May 22, 2008 are just part of the journey. All of you here are so important to my sobriety. I wouldn't be here and one year sober today without all of your sharing and your help. I thank each and every one of you for sharing and for helping me.
