    AA to MWO

I am an alcoholic who was sober in AA for 14 years. I picked up and drink and have been struggling with drinking for the past 7. I have been trying to get back to AA and am having a great deal of difficulty relating to the people and program. Although I believe in God, I don't want it to be the primary focus of recovery. Recovery programs are supposed to be spiritual and not religious but it does not seem to work out that way.

Although I have problems, drinking is my biggest and the focus of my attention. My entire family died from this disease leaving me quite alone for many years. I am 56 and live in New York City. Although I work alot and keep busy at the gym, I find myself going to AA meetings just to sit and talk to other alcoholics.

I want to stay sober very much. The holidays are coming and that is a very hard time for me. I am divorced and live alone so it's easy to feel sorry for my self and say the Hell with it and just take a drink. I've been sober about 4 months now.............................I've enjoyed the chat room the passed 2 weeks and connected with some very nice people.

We are happy to have you here!! Anytime you need to chat or get through a rough patch, someone will be there to connect with.

A very diverse group in terms of spirituality but I have never seen one person try to push their ideas on another. However, we accept when people post their views. I love the acceptance.

Hope to see you in chat. Your success for 14 years and now 4 months will also be a big help to many of us.

        Hi golfgirl........glad you`ve joined us.

        Congrats on the 4 mths.
I have great respect for AA, but could just never relate to their approach personally.........would find it depressing.
I understand you were sober for 14 yrs with AA, and have been drinking again for 7 yrs., save for the last 4 mths.........how did you start drinking again.........did you leave AA 7 yrs. ago?..........I also started drinking again after being sober for 10 yrs, but am newly sober again, thanks to this site.

It`s not my place to advise whether or not you should get heavily involved with AA again, but I get the impression that you`ve gone along to some meetings recently for the company. To be perfectly honest, I don`t think other alcoholics are the best company for any of us battling our own alcoholism.

I think you should find a hobby to fill up your free time.....maybe take an evening class to meet some new friends. You can also spend some time here........we have some good laughs amidst all our troubles.

Hope to hear more from you.

        Wishing you love and strength,

        Starlight Impress x

Hi Golf Girl. Welcome, and hope you find the help you need here in our little community. 4 months is awesome. I was AF for ten years, then drank for 7, and am now 60+ days AF with the help of this site. Never have been to AA. Best wishes!
