    Help

    January 3, 2008
We had gone to bed at 12:00 pm, unexpectedly my wife was in the mood and we or at least I had fun. I looked the clock and it was only 1:20 earlier than if we had closed the bar, I could not have been happier. I was going to have a good nights sleep, perfect. I fell asleep and then at 1:50 I woke up. Wide awake, as if I had had a full nights sleep what was I going to do now and the panic set in, My wife and I had decided to each have 4 drinks 200 ml, we consumed them in one hour I’m sure I set the pace. But now I’m pacing the living room, unable to sit for even a minute, I keep telling myself close your eyes for a minute you’ll sleep, then I tell myself who cares you’ll be fine tomorrow and even without sleep you’ll be in better shape than if you got drunk. Nope I can’t sit still, then I remember I have a bottle of Whisky, I tell myself to ignore, it even without sleep you’ll be in better shape than if you got drunk But now I’m pacing the living room, unable to sit for even a minute, I pour myself a double at 5:00am and immediately pour the remainder down the drain. Turns out to be a god send, I’m calm, I go to bed at 5:40 and last to 6:40 when I begin to wrote this. It’s 7:10 Good night.

Turns out that drink only calmed me down for an hour. It’s 7:20 and I’m back. Not exactly a solution, but I swear it seams as if it saved me from going out of my mind.

I had taken the week between Christmas and new years off so we had been drinking for 10 days. We decided to stop after New Years Eve. I panicked and took a sleeping pill at 12 then another What a mess, couldn’t stand would have been better off hungover.

Jan 4 had 5 beers so this wouldn’t happen, cant sleep shaking

    Help

    Brer,

It sounds as if you are very heavily addicted. I am not a professional but that is how it sounds to me.

Please call a doctor and get some meds to help you withdraw. It makes withdrawal doable instead of not doable.

It can be very dangerous to quit cold turkey if you are so addicted. Seizures.

There is a link on this site about it. Go to the ASAP forum and one of the sticky posts will guide you there.

You are not alone. Many of us had to have help with meds to withdraw.

    Be safe, be strong,
    Love,
    Cindi

      Help

Hi there...hope you log again to read the replies. We are here. I understand the not being able to sleep. Wide awake, especially more so when there are no "real" responsiblities in the morning. Sometimes we drink to sleep, and then when that doesn't happen and we are really questioning ourselves. So many worries in life....hope you are okay. For some reason I really related to your post....
This is no longer a drinking problem...it's a matter of Life or Death!!!

        Help

        Hi and Welcome!

I found that lots of exercise works the best to help me sleep if not drinking. Not sure if you exercise already, but it is a big part of the MWO program as well, and I was amazed at how much it helps to endure the evenings and sleeping patterns. I would recommend a good long fast-paced walk in conjunction with spurts of jogging for a good 45 minutes or an hour. If you can do some weight lifting as well, it will really help relax your muscles at night and makes tossing and turning a thing of the past for me.

Also, I got a prescription for Lunesta which is time-released and so it keeps you asleep all night rather than just initially putting you to sleep.

Just a few ideas... hope tonight is better!

          Help

Hello Brer, and welcome. I'm glad you've come here.

I agree with above, that you determine whether or not you are so addicted that you need medical assistance with withdrawals. A friend went through it while living with me last year, I have seen how hard it can be.

As for sleeping, I had trouble during my first few AF days. Do get something to help you sleep. I use Melatonin - a natural supplement that works wonders without leaving me groggy in the morning. Or anything really, just so that "needing to sleep" isn't one of the reasons you can't quit drinking. It's hard enough as it is, without convincing ourselves we need it to rest.

My best to you and your wife.
          FINALLY -- I'm a non-drinker!!
