    My Story -- First Post

Hi, I am a 40 year old male. I have a problem with drinking, in that once in awhile I overdrink. I am a weekend/social drinker. Sometimes, I turn into this "party guy" and get drunk. we were on a family vacation last week, and it happened again. my kids, in laws, aunts and uncles all saw me drunk. I am really embarrased.

I have tried to moderate, and do great for a while. Then I "forget" to be careful and get in trouble. I dont want to quit drinking altogether, but do want to learn to moderate.

I have been drinking since I was 15 and did not grow up in a family with good boundaries, although neither one of my parents are big drinkers. I have been living with this same pattern since 15. I do not crave alcohol and only really drink in a social setting. As a kid I felt like an outsider, and I wonder if I try to make up for it now by trying to be the life of the party?

I have not tried drugs/herbs to help moderate, but I am open to it.

I need help/support. Thanks. Need help ASAP..

      Nicholas,
welcome to MWO. You have come to the right place. You will find a wonderful Motley crew of members who go out of their way to support each other.
Try to read as many posts as you can, especially older once and read through the posts from the long term abstainers.
It really helps when you can come to a place where nobody judges you because we are all clinging to the same life raft.
I wish you well on your journey of discovering yourself.

        Hi Nicholas

You sound a lot like me although my drinking seems to have gone a little bit further than yours.

I joined this site in March and have found it to be really helpful - I wouldn't be where I am now without it. I'm not there yet but I'm learning more and more each day and am starting to enjoy social occasions without alcohol.

Keep coming on to the site and reading and posting you'll feel so much better knowing there are others in your situation.

        Good Luck xxx

          Nicholas, welcome.

I suggest you reading the book (Health Store link at top of the page). The whole program discusses moderation if that's what you are seeking.

When I first came here, I only had intentions of cutting back. But someone wise told me that I really should go 30 days AF (alcohol free) before I tried to mod. Well, it was not fun, but I did it. It does require a willpower like nothing else in your life. But I'll tell you, those 30 days felt so good that I went for another. It was about 2 months into the program that I felt too good to risk modding. But I am not saying that you shouldn't try it. You have to find your own way out. But try to commit to a certain amount to AF days first. It will help clear your mind and you can really focus on what is best for you.

          The supplements help as well.

Good luck. Check in with us when you can. We are here for you.
