I'm New Here - First Day!

I have been a problem drinker (only child of problem drinkers and granddaughter of problem drinkers) and have been aware of this for 30 years. I am soon to be 57 and last Saturday I verbally abused my husband in front of good friends. Empty-nesting and my mother (who lived with us for 3 years and is now in a nursing home) have been the toppers to a depression that has been kept at bay by exercising. Several cocktails at night (a few before my husband came home from work) signalled the end of workday. I have a successful home business. But with the kids back in college, a glass of wine with lunch. Then, maybe a glass mid-afternoon. The happy warm buzz was a joyful thing it seemed to cover the depression. Have known about blood sugar drops in late afternoon, and there's adrenal burn-out going on, too. Found MWO on Sunday and ordered the cds and nutritionals. Got into a doc and am taking Naltrexone. It has truly helped curb the cravings. In the true believer first phase and want this to stick. It was great to wake up today. Thank you to anyone who will partner or stay with me. Newbies and those who have walked the path and have wisdom! Here it goes!

    Welcome

Hi, I wish you all the best. Today is my start as well. I posted in the starting out section. I can relate to you very well. However, not an empty nester yet. I have struggled with al for over 25 years and I'm soon to be 49 and want to stop before I kill myself. Did you just ask your doctor for naltexone? How did that make you feel and how was your doctor about it?:welcome:

      :welcome:Work and Amcal!!!!

Well I am a relative Newbie here, so will in no way attempt to impart knowledge or wisdom,as I am still trying to gather some for myself, but just wanted you to know that things are on the 'up' with this place!

I have managed to notch up my first ever run of 10 days AF in a row and it is ALL due to this forum (and for me in particular all the Nesters over in the Newbies Nest Thread!)

MWO is brilliant, just find your own 'version' of how you want to go about it or what suits you best and use the wisdom and experience of everyone else to help you through...they share your ups and downs 24/7.

Keep posting and talking and listening and you will do great.
      All the best,
      Chicken:welcome:

The doctor I chose is a doctor that treats depression but also alcohol and narcotic abuse. So, when I got through my depression malaise and underlying general anger, I confessed to problem drinking. I wanted to go on the MWO Topomax, but this doc wanted the Naltexon injection. She did write a scrip for Topomax but I have to wait a few days for my insurance to accept this. I am also taking three days of Campral, too. Wonderfully, all cravings are GONE! I helped out at a fundraiser yesterday and made margaritas for 5 hrs. And didn't care for one - not even once! My doc also wants me to go to AA, but just like Roberta in MWO, I don't want to be public and also have the time consuming meetings. I like how this program works. So, I would like to have a companion on this - so are you up for that? I would be happy to share the journey and give support and be supported. :thanks:

                  ready to partner up

Hi Amcal, thanks for the info. I'm not at the point of doing the prescription med route. I just don't want to try it because of insurance, fear, etc. I was able to do it without prescription last time. I am going to take supplements like the kudzu, l-glutamine and for mood support gaba and sam-e. Plus melatonin for sleep and multi vitamins. I will also listen to relaxation and hypnosis cd's. I just got back from GNC with a few things I needed. I would be thrilled to have someone accountable to. PM (post message) me if you want to have someone to "talk" to. Take care!

So you are saying naltrexone has been good for you? And do you take the tablets or the injection (vivitrol). My doc wants me to switch to the injectible type. I am also taking Camprol for 3 days. Getting a bit of a late afternoon desire for a drink. Just an itty bitty craving. But I'll take the other 2 tablets of Camprol today. Going to a bbq where there will be a bar and drinking. Feeling strong.:thanks:

Hi Am (Hoosier!). I'll be 57 in 5 weeks, and I had become a SERIOUS drinker before I found MWO last year this time. My life has changed completely for the better, and I believe it's entirely possible I might not be alive today if not for those changes. You've gotten some great advice, but it ultimately is your path to find, and you sound like you have the will to do it. If you need any help navigating, or any questions, PM me or even e-mail me (click on my name) and I'll get back to you as soon as I can. There's usually a lively chat group around sometime after 9:00 PM EST (what time zone are you in?). Good luck girl - we're pulling for you.

Hi Work! I would be happy to partner with you! That would be great! So what day are you on right now? I'm on day 2. And feeling good so far. Just a note: you can get your meds from River Pharmacy - no doc involved. Think you are doing great with the stuff you got at GNC. Well, let's do it!
