    Got to make it work

    Hi all.
    Don't know where to start.
I'm 37 yrs old and been drinking to much for 20 yrs.
Got in quite a bit of trouble when I was younger(DUI's) and went through rehab and AA a couple of times, but it didn't keep. Last DUI was in 1997 and haven't been in trouble since, but it's only a matter of time because I've gotten back into my old habits within the last couple of years. It's like something clicked and I don't care about anything or anybody. In the last three months I've lost my job and my wife of 10yrs. Have been playing with quitting all year, made it about six weeks back in the summer, but I went back. This is the first time I've tried to seek out help on my own, as the other times were court ordered or I tried to do it by myself.
Hope to be around for a while.
    Thanks

      Welcome, TN!

This is a great place, it has helped me more than the few times I quit on my own. There's tons of information and support here, no one judges you, and everyone's been there.

I drank for 36 years and am now on day 65 AF (alcohol free), and intend to stay that way. Coming here and using all the tools and information has honestly changed my life, and it is so much better now.

Hope to see you around here, you will not regret it. Much love!

          Got to make it work

this site helps me so much TN!
i'm back in the 'make it 7 day AF' stage.
i hope to god i make it stick this time.
i am using strategies folks have suggested here this week and so far so good.
the latest 'in my head conversation was ' go ahead and have drink. your gonna be disappointed that you did tomorrow and feel bad about yourself... but go ahead if that is what you want to do!'
          it worked today!
hang tough, it takes a while but don't give up!

Thx for the kind words. Feeling better. Today is day 7 AF. After day 4 it gets alot easier, but I think for me it gets to easy and that is why I have always gone back. The selective memory gets going and away we go.

Good luck to everyone and stay close. I am.

            Thx again.

Wisely said, TN. After time passes, the stinkin' thinkin' kicks in, and 'it wasn't so bad', or, 'I can handle just one or two'. Famous last words for us. But it IS good to see you're hanging in there, and in here.

                Grats on Day 7!

One of the things I've found is that I lean on the site not for advice, but to remind myself of the space I was in. As new people "come through the doors" I feel I can contribute, and in doing so remind myself that I'm not seeking to come through that door again.

If you have the time, please join our ODAT (One Day at a Time) thread. It's just a way of checking in and re-establishing a link with people who are going through the same life-change.
