    I love this site

Hello, I have been visiting so many sites over the past year and absolutely feel so at home here. I have been all over this site and feel as though I could have written many of the posts myself.

To introduce myself, I am in my mid fifties, love to garden, cook and drink wine.

I have been drinking about 2 bottles of wine per night for over 10 years. Have been a steady drinker for over 25 years though.

I have tried to stop drinking on my own numerous times over the past two years. I have failed.

I am so sick and tired of my drinking problem. I have not been to a Dr. In over 10 years and I know I am having some problems with my health as I self monitor blood pressure and cholesterol.

My goal is to be AF, just need some support and advice from friendly people.

    Thanks for listen8ng.:thanks:

    Hi Gardener!

I just wanted to say welcome and give you some support. The Newbie's Nest thread under "Just starting out" and the Toolbox thread (first thread in Monthly Abstinence) are great threads for folks who just got here.

I love to garden and cook too! This forum gave me the support and the tools to quit drinking.

An AF life is such a relief, in so many ways. Please believe that you deserve it, and make it happen for yourself. I found that my blood pressure went down after quitting, among other things that improved.

    I hope you stick around.

      Welcome, Gardener!

I also am in my mid50s and love to garden and cook and I used to love wine (but I don't anymore ). You also can get rid of that and still enjoy the others just as much and probably MORE!

The links to the threads Pinecone mentioned are given below. I hope you come hang out in the Nest with the others of us who haven't been at this very long.

      Nice to meet you!

Hi Gardener and :welcome: to MWO,

I am also in my fifties and drank daily for 23 years. Sobriety is so good.

Do not fear, as No Sugar said you can do all the things you love sober, and you can do them better.

The first week is hard physically for everyone, eat well and plenty, rest , and drink loads of water with lemon juice.

Remember the desire to drink is only the alcohol withdrawing, it will pass.

Maybe we should change this to the Love Wine / Mid Fifities thread ?:H
            :welcome:
And agree totally with everyone above - you CAN do it.
Listen to KY - she is a head of knowledge and will make you accountable - which is sometimes needed
            :hiya: yoo hoo KY

I have succeeded in stopping a daily wine habit and had the same history as you.
POST & READ every day is my advice.

            Good Luck

Hi, Satz. I like identifying people who are about the same age -- surely we have several things in common other than AL, just because of when we were born !

At the beginning, I made a commitment to basically spend about as much time as I had wasted drinking (~4hours/day) to reading and posting on MWO, like Satz said, every day. It helped enormously and I still had extra time each day b/c I can stay up much later. Even though this is no longer a daily battle, I still think it is important to actively engage here each day and preferably, more than once.

Hi, Kuya. I bet you enjoyed a sober Mother's Day with your kids !

It is indeed a great place with even greater support. Somewhere, there is a person who has or is going through exactly what you are as well. You are not alone in this battle.

Welcome, another ex-wine drinker, mid-fifties and am a cook and a gardener although this year will be my first one with a large veggie garden. Flowers are my usual thing. I have tried to quit numerous times in the past four years and am only finding success recently so I'm on a roll of nearly four weeks.

I am happy to meet you and look forward to getting to know you better. You have struck gold by finding this site. There is so much knowledge, experience and great advice that our long-term members so generously share with us strugglers.

Thanks for the welcome Kuya, I am so relieved to know I'm not the only mid fifties wine lover here! Thanks too for your encouragement.

I have been tapering the past 2 days with beer, yucko#@&#%##. Feel pretty tired and foggy, but not hungover. Even spoke with a client last nite without slurring my words, thats an accomplishment for me right there.

I have what i think is a good taper plan, will follow that for 2 weeks, then AF. I really don't want to involve insurance at this point til I see if I can do it myself this time. I haven't really ever given it an honest try before, I am ready to do that now. See you around, will post on the nest and keep reading and learning.

Welcome Gardener from another 50year old who loves gardening & cooking and....used to love wine!

You CAN do this, you really can!!! I used to love coming in from the garden, starting dinner and rewarding myself with the w word!! I made the decision one year ago to stop drinking and I have never regreted it. All I regret is those wasted years.

Gardener, if this is what you want, what you really want.... then do it!! Be positive....I see so many posts that say "I'm hoping to quit...." or "I'm trying to quit....." that send the message straight away that failure is an option and 9/10 it is. Only you know how much you want this and whether your "switch" is down. Make the decision, make a plan and stick with it. For what its worth...the Rain in my Heart Documentaries at the top of the General Discussion Board hit me hard and Jason Vale's book "Kick the Drink" helped me. However you tackle your journey.....good luck!! xx
                          AF since 9 May 2012

Hi Janice, someone said we should start a section for cooks and gardeners in their 50's, there are alot of us here. Thanks too for your encouragement, I know I can do it! I do have a plan and I'm working it.

Feel pretty good, not sleeping well but not suffering too much with withdrawals. I am tapering and have a 21 day plan to be AF. So far, so good I am sticking to it. I know alot of folks don't place much too much hope on tapering, but I am going to give it my best.

Wish me luck, Day 4 and on schedule.

Hi I am new to the site too , been drinking 2 bottles of wine almost nightly for several years , 9pm is the killer time and I can consume that wine in less than 2 hours knock myself out and then start over Again the following night , Every morning I wake up hating myself for being weak and promise myself that's the last day ... I have tried so many times to not buy the stuff , but my cravings kick in .... And off I go to the off licence ... Like my life depends on it .... I have decided after reading through the forums here and finding so much inspiration to try the Bac route , I'm on day 4 , 3 of which have been AF more through determination at this stage but I'm already feeling positive ... Which is definitely a first .
