      Pregnancy and drinking

well, one thing that is good about pregnancy must be...

pressure to drink in social situations seems to be a huge obstacle to people trying to cut down. everyone worries about what excuses to use.

if you are obviously pregnant, no one will want you to drink!

also, if you are of childbearing age and with a partner and decline a drink, people, typically women, might suspect that you think you are pregnant or want to get pregnant if you decline an alcoholic drink.

        Pregnancy and drinking

Its interesting that Nancy. I have a friend in the UK and she had people jumping down her throat when she tried to have a glass of wine whilst pregnant and another in France who had all her partners family on her back about what she ate and drank. I've never had that, for the most part people don't push much but it has happened on occasion, you know the just one more won't hurt crowd? It is easier to say no though so thats a very good point.

Mafalda: I asked about your name, because I live in Argentina! Is there someone there, not knowing who's Mafalda. Very difficult to find... So, If I may ask, are you argentinian?
Congratulations, so far. I hope you are doing good with your pregnant, hang in there, perhaps the cravings are gone???!!

Nancy, so interested about your comment about poeple who are addicted having a hole in their soul...

So funny that everyone seems to feel like they have a right to criticise pregnant women - saw a pregnant woman smoking the other day and everyone horrified (including me)! How silly of me - how dare I choose to judge someone I know nothing about.

My friends who have been pregnant see no harm in having the truly occasional drink - but they HAVE said they feel drunk even after one seemingly harmless glass of champers at a friend's wedding- simply because they've been AF so so long.

            Much love to you Mafalda

              Pregnancy and drinking

Wow, drinking while I was pregnant was not an issue. I was one of those women who got sick, sick, sick! I was nauseaus for months! Everyday! So I couldn't even think of having a drink! UGH!!!!!! However, after my sons were born, my mother hired an Irish nanny who served me a glass of beer just before breast feeding because "It encouraged let-down" Geeezzzzz what a load of cra*! So, both of my kids came into this world with a taste for the hops! Great job on my part! Now the boys are 20 and 17 and one likes to drink (the older one) and the other is too into sports - but the more Irish of the two. I too have a conflict this coming weekend. A Bar Mitzvah up in New York! Lots of others will be drinking around me. But I really am determined not to get defeated by cravings! Best of luck to you with your pregnancy....

                Update

Hey everyone, Thanks for the support. It has been a few weeks and it has gotten easier. My husband who I have to say is the greatest has cut back a lot (doesn't drink wine every night ) and hides the bottle if he does have a drink just in case I get tempted. About the parties, I am not obviously pregnant yet so I took to drinking tonic water, everyone thinks I'm having a gin and tonic. I have to say though I will cut back on my socializing a lot. I get very bored. I hate doing chit chat with strangers when I drink, but doing it sober is sheer torture. I also thought it would be fun to be sober and watch how everyone behaves drunk, but in most cases people are not that different, they just get louder. Cravings have not been too bad, I am still having coffee and eating what I want, lucklily I like mostly healthy food so I have been eating lots of fruits and veggies. Also it.s nice to get up every morning without a hangover, that is priceless, still groggy but no headache!
I am going on vacation next week and this will be the real test, but I will be with people who will be watching me so I guess it will be hard to cheat. I am very lucky to have family who cares about me (I am travelling with my husband and sister) and am sure they will be looking after me. THanks to everyone!

Ellen, I am not from Argentina, but have been there a few times and I speak Spanish. I love Mafalda , El Topo Gigio and El Petete!

                  Pregnancy and drinking

My story is a little bit sad, but in a way it has a positive note too so I;m going to share it with you anyway. I recently got pregnant and was panicking about being able to stay off the booze and sought advice and support on these boards. Unfortunately I miscarried at 10 weeks. But I know within those ten weeks I didn't drink, I excercised moderately and ate organic food. I have no doubt that I wasn't to blame. If I had continued to drink, even a few glasses here and there I'd have always wondered had I been in some way responsible. I'm not saying I wasn't tempted, boy it was tough at times! Look after yourself as well as you can luv. I think most people say that a few glasses do no harm, but is it really worth the risk. My very best wishes to you
