    The good girl

Finally I have got the courage to register and tell my story. It?s strange, because I don?t have almost any embarrassing moments. OK, I have my ?moments? of making promises that I regret the following day and the worst of all, not remembering the end of the evenings. How it all started ? the usual college years, wild parties. After graduation started PHD, but then immigrated to UK. The first 10 years it was all about hard work, building a very successful career and raising my wonderful son. My troubles started about 7 year ago. My working days were anything between 10 -12 to 14h a day. Having a few glasses of wine seemed to be so relaxing! And so it went for number of years, never escalated to more than that until recently. After my son went to college I started drinking a lot more over the weekends. I do have a very loving husband, my best friend as well, but initially he always enjoyed sharing a drink with me, except that he never got drunk and I did. He started commenting on that and I hate to upset him, so I stopped drinking during the week, even on Friday night, but then I more than made up for during the weekend. Alarm bells started ringing when I stopped going out shopping on Saturday, making an excuse that reading a book at home with a glass of wine was much more enjoyable. Except that it was not just a glass and it started in the morning ? shame!!! So hear I am, hoping that with your help I will discover my old self.

I am a very sporty person. At 42 I still run 4-5 miles every morning (except on Sunday), I am the same weight as I was at 17, healthy eating and taking vitamins and other supplements which I have discovered myself, but they are very similar to the ones recommended in MWO, except Topa, but I don?t consider taking it anyway. I would love to be able to moderate, but from past experience I strongly suspect that AF is my only option. In the past I have managed 2 to 4 weeks AF, but then there always has been a holiday, or a special occasion and then I go back to my weekend binge.

Thank you for reading my story and I am looking forward to exchanging ideas.
    Love Dessi

Hello Dessi, such a lovely first post ? welcome to MYO ? you?re going to be in safe hands here with so much experience to give you support. I?m only a newbie myself, but from reading through the posts, some of these guys come over as good as professional councillors. I?m not suggesting for one moment that you need counselling, you sound so philosophical, you are a sportsperson, live a healthy life style and have a loving husband who is also your best friend ? what a superb basis to build your aspirations on. With the wonderful support from all here, I?m sure you will rediscover your old self???.wishing you all that you would wish yourself??..A.G.

            Hi all,
Thank you for the warm welcome. Long weekend in front of me. Already reading the book for a second time. I’ll try to stay positive, after all I have no trouble not to drink during the week, so what is so special about the weekend?

Hi Dessi, welcome. I can relate alot to your post. I also feel that I have to go AF and have now for over a week. I suggest alcohol free beer with lime in a fancy glass....I have been a wine and vodka drinker, never beer, but it is working for me. I feel like I am having an adult treat, and so far haven't missed the wine. I am not taking topamax and don't want too. I have always been active and take vitamins....so for me it is mind over matter and getting on here reading posts and doing the drink tracker helps too. I hope to see more of your posts....Buffy

                HI Dessi,
Like you i was more of a weekend bindger, sucks dosnt it, and like you i can go for weeks without drinking if i put my mind to it, then start back slowly and work my way up , but i have never had the supps before and the support on here most of the time i just got negative feedback and it just made me feel worse, and what the hell i am a loser so just keep drinking, but since i have been on here i feel better that i am not the only one, very normal and functional people also have my problem, so gain strength from the fact you are not alone, and although i am a newby to this i can only say so far so good..
                keep posting

                  Welcome Dessi,

Minus the weekend binging, I want your life! I'm so glad that you found MYO. Everyone here is different and yet the same. We're struggling with control over alcohol, or rather, alcohol's control over us. The wonderful aspect of this website is the support, empathy, and wonderful advice you get from the MYO community. I was drinking most days of the week and have been able to cut back significantly since seriously engaging in the MYO program. I feel so much more in control of my life now than I did just a few months ago. I attribute so much of that to the benefits of this program. I look forward to hearing from you again. Good luck.

                  Julie

:welcome: Dessi! I am not a weekend binger. I have been a bottle(or+)per night drinker the last 4-5 years. After MWO, (no Topa yet....but soon) I am 1 bottle every other night, but weekends more. Just sending hugs, and welcome- LOTS of support here.

Hi Buffy, Chilli, Julie and Amethyst!

What a wonderful feeling it is to get all that support! I’ve managed to have a really good weekend last week and then…. Bank Holiday Monday was worst then ever. Went for a nice walk with my husband, stopped at the pub for a drink – all very civilised and enjoyable, and then why on earth did I have to drink a bottle of wine at home?!! I don’t want to go in to details, but I am not proud with myself. Hubby was upset, but understanding as usual. I haven’t touched a drop since then and I am absolutely determined not to repeat the same mistake this weekend.

Buffy, “so for me it is mind over matter” - I am exactly the same. Thanks for the advice to go to the drink tracker.

Try the Kaliber alcohol free lager in the UK. It is OK and I have given it to a few male friends who actually said they liked it, then I told them it was AF, they were amazed.

                        Welcome anyway,

Hi Desi, :welcome: Glad you've found us. We are a very supportive group who understands all the problems with alcohol and for many of us women it is shame. So keep posting and I look forward to hearing from you.

Welcome Dessi, I think you will be feeling better soon (not that it is not an up and down ride but the people here and the whole program is amazing). I have only been here a short time but I highly recommend the drink tracker, L-glutamine poured on your tongue just before your normal temptation time (Thanks MD, at least I think it was MD) the kudzu and the cds. Plus the support of the checkins. I feel a miracle has occurred in my life.
