    Has anyone read Lit?

It is by Mary Karr. I am about 50% through and hoping she gets to the healing part soon. She really makes you feel her situation and the path that led her there.

Hi, I read Lit and I liked it. I couldn't relate to her conversion to Catholicism and it helping her with her recovery. That's just me. But, it's an interesting story.

I agree on the Catholicism thing. I just finished it. But I could relate to the day to day struggle to quit.

I am just finishing this now, about the author's recovery from alcohol and depression. I found her struggle to deal with the concept of a higher power very interesting. She is a great writer.
My life is better without alcohol, since 9/1/12. My sobriety tool is the list at permalink 236 on the toolbox thread under monthly abstinance.

I read Lit sometime ago and have since given the book away. I wish I had kept it. I can still see the cover of the hardback very clearly in my mind.

What I wanted, for myself, but was unable to achieve was a group of close friends who were recovering from alcoholism. I am such a loner. I understood Karr's conversion to the Catholic approach to life: I was raised to be a "saint" in the Catholic church. I have deep respect.

Alcoholism is very painful. It erodes our souls. Karr found support in her group, which included her sponser and friends. I find support in this MWO website. Maybe it's not the same. Still, it is saving my life.

Great book. I highly recommend it. I may purchase another copy.

I responded to this post a few days ago. Then I deleted my post. Now I am going to try again. I read Lit when I was in the throws of alcoholism. As with all things related to alcohol, I hid the book in my closet. Then I threw it in trash as to not be discovered by my husband.

Still, I can see the cover of the hardback clearly. And some of Mary's passages are seared in my mind. She wrote that she had taken her thousandth last drink (paraphrase). Yes, every alcoholic has. For me, every day was going to be my last day of drinking.

I sort of "get" her conversion to Catholicism as part of her healing. She was looking for some sense of order in the chaos of alcoholism. (I think.) Catholicism is quite ordered: a place for everything -- and everything in its place.

I liked the book. I wish I still had it.

I haven't read it, but would like to. I'm not a catholic, but I respect if her religion helped her.

Nowadays, you can get the kindle app on your phone or Mac, and less likely for anyone to see your books! Always a thought...

I read this a few months ago, and it was excellent. Also saw an interview with her on youtube. What a beautiful woman, physically and spiritually.

She was also the poetry professor for the author of SMASHED. That is another book I highly recommend.
