    The Glass Castle

Has anyone else read The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls? It was the best book I have read in a while! It's a memoir of a girl growing up in an alcoholic, nomadic family. There were parts I was laughing so hard I was crying and parts I was just crying. Check it out!

Sooo - Shelby, LVT, Oney and Sidney ... what did you think of the parents? Love them or hate them? I still can't make up my mind.

I kinda hated them Tawny....they frustrated me.

They believed that the kids should be able to take care of themselves and that it would make them in dependant....while they were, in all honesty, dreadfully neglected.
The mother cares only about her art and the father is eccentric to say the least (altho he does try to teach the kids stuff)

Maybe I am biased becase I can identify with some of the stuff that Jeanette went thru as a child and it still makes me angry to this day and I am hell bent on making sure my kids never see that side of life.
It hit too close to the bone for me...but I did enjoy reading it.

I found it interesting that, as an adult, Jeanette NEVER judged them.

Agreed, she talks about them with great affection and I think she really loved them.

It could have been a very different type of book if she had been angry and resentful, and to her credit, she wasn't.

This is one of my all time favorite books. From page 1 when the author tells how she is riding in a cab and notices her mother on the street rummaging through the trash looking for her dinner, the story told by this memoir held me captive till the very end.

It will make you laugh and cry at the same time.

My daughter read it in grade 11 last year. She wants me to read it. I reserved it at the library and I only have 320 ahead of me on the wait list!

Just tells ya, that it is a great book!
