    Diary of an Alcoholic Housewife

I am currently reading this book. Really having a hard time putting it down. This author just really seems to get it.
Wondering if anyone else has read it.

              Diary of an Alcoholic Housewife

I just finished this book over the weekend. Liked it a lot, enjoyed her writing style, however, I thought it really painted a bad picture of AA. I don't know that much about AA but it made me want to stay clear. Did anyone else feel that way?

                Diary of an Alcoholic Housewife

I just ordered this book from Amazon. I am a 43 year old mother of two girls, 15 and 10, and have been drinking way too much for 20 years now. I saw a picture of myself taken last week and could not believe how bloated my face was, even compared to 1 year ago! I am not overweight by any means either, so it really depressed me. I also work out religiously and other than the drinking, am very health conscious!

I feel like the alcohol is finally catching up with me. I think if I keep up my drinking pattern, I will surely die probably in the next ten years! I am vain and feel like my looks may be the best thing to get me motivated to quit or at least seriously see if I can moderate!:new:

I liked the book at first, but then it got boring. Not sure I got anything out of it...that I could use in my life.

I, to, am having a hard time putting this book down! I find myself thinking about it constantly as well. I can definitely relate to the author. She was on The Today Show with Ann Curry a few weeks ago too. She doesn't talk too highly about AA in the book, written in 2003 as she was just getting sober but I guess at this point she is a big fan b/c she is still active in it. I tried AA and just really did not like it! The people seemed so bossy and intolerant!

I ordered this book too despite a lot of mixed reviews on Amazon. I'm curious!

applekat, I was a person who SWORE I would NEVER go to AA, but now I am a regular. So I can sort of identify with what I think you are saying. Now that AL has been out of the drivers seat of my life (and out of my life entirely) for about 3.5 years, I can say that what seemed bossy and intolerant initially at AA was just a bunch of people who DO know what it takes to get sober and stay sober sharing what worked for them. May not be for everyone - but from what I have seen over the years, the intent is good - just to share what worked for them. After watching people die from alcoholism, it's easy for me to see why people are stinkers about their beliefs.

                      Good luck to you!

Thanks, DG. I will consider what you said about the people in AA. I think a lot of it is that I am so easy to push over and manipulate, etc. but then end up resenting the people who I feel are doing it to me instead of asking questions and standing up for myself. (I am not sure if that makes any sense )
