These books have helped my first 60 sober days

I was here two years ago and made it to 6 weeks of sobriety. Then Thanksgiving 2009 happened, my family came to visit, and that's all she wrote. I was back on the bottle, averaging 1.5 liters of red wine each day. My "bottom" wasn't a DUI, a divorce or a visit from child services. It was dropping my son off for his first day of kindergarten -- at a lovely school I've been obsessing over getting him into for 2 years -- with a hangover. I was sure everyone was going to find out my big, ugly secret. I made the decision to get sober for good, and have not had a drink since 9/10/11 (almost 60 days - the longest I've gone in nearly 20 years!). I've been devouring recovery memoirs, and have found the following really helpful. It's interesting that so many decide to get sober in their late 30's?.I can relate to these stories, and maybe you can too. I would love recommendations for books that others are reading!

    Dry - Augusten Burroughs
Diary of an Alcoholic Housewife - Brenda Wilhelmson
Drinking, A Love Story - Caroline Knapp
I Want - Jane Velez Mitchell
Mommy Doesn't Drink Here Anymore - Rachael Brownell

That's great news, congrats! Wish I had done it in my late 30's.... keep it up, thanks for sharing the books. I've read Dry but not the others. I own but have not read Jason Vale and Allen Carr, both well thought of here.

That is AWESOME................60 days is huge! Especially for going 20 years. Keep it up, and you will be pleased with the amount of days that rack up.

You should be noticing the difference your life has without AL.....all of which are only positive.

          Welcome Brooklynmom :welcome:

Great job on getting to 60 days AF! I loved the book Dry and also A Million Little Pieces.

I also went through a time in my recovery when I watched every single movie I could find about drinking. From "My Name is Bill", "28 days" and "Leaving Las Vegas" they all impacted my in different ways. Even "When I man Loves a woman" which Id watched many years before, I saw again in a very different light.
"In the depths of winter I finally learned there was in me an invincible summer ."

I really like the allan carr book - I know it isn't for a lot of folk - a lot seem to prefer the Vale book, but I could NOT get into his - the carr book seems to tip me over the edge when I quit - I have quit twice - last time I started again after 8 months - this time I am quitting for good and the Carr book was part of my arsenal. There is something about the way that he writes that i like and that resonates with me - he makes me change my mindset so I don't use will power - I just stop thinking about AL and think, I AM FREE. It is amazing the way it works - FOR ME. A good friend of mine quit two weeks before me and his book does nothing for her. It is worth giving a try ........just my tuppence worth,

            hugs, sun X
How simple it is to see that we can only be happy now and there will never be a time when it is not now....
