    Shades of Grey

Apparenty it is classified 'mummy porn' LOL I don't imagine anyone who reads a lot could stomach the childlike writing and repetitiveness of this book!!

Yeah, but it says something doesn't it, that this book has already been slated for a movie? Some lucky talentless person is always the one to find the grail, lol.

Wow. I am a college educated woman with a masters in education. I teach reading and love this series. I guess I don't read....hmm how can I teach then? I don't care what my students are reading as long as they are READING and applying the skills I have taught them. Kudos to those who are reading and enjoying whatever it is they are reading!

Clear eyes, I know the series is popular, and I'm glad you are enjoying it. My thoughts were just that it isn't written all that well, compared to the books I enjoy. A lot of my friends who love it are also college educated. However, they are not avid readers of fiction, like I am, and maybe not quite as discriminating. I never meant to imply that people who don't read (voraciously) are stupid.

Most of my friends who are raving about this awful book are intelligent but not avid readers. I have tried to read it but can't see the attraction. I do love reading, and mourn the passing of Maeve Binchy, who died recently.

                      Shades of Grey

Ok … I bought the book very quickly – it was on top of the list on Amazon –“twisted love story … all New York moms are reading this” blah blah blah ( btw … amazon said the same thing about “The help” at the time). Incidentally I read that the movie rights have been bought. I read loads and loads of different things / genre depending on my mood and location. At the time I only had 5 minutes of wifi left before boarding a plane so this is my lame excuse for not doing my due diligence.

I was shocked, I thought this book belongs to erotica (they have that in an amazon special section, right?) – thank goodness I was reading it on kindle. It should come with some kind of warning, I was afraid someone would read it over my shoulder. Please note I did keep on reading. Ok, the writing is atrocious ( and I am not a native English speaker, but come on …don't they teach you to avoid repetition in school essays?).

Since this forum is about honesty I have to admit that I bought the next two books a bit later, just like Library girl, in expectation of some sort of a plot, thankfully the sex scenes became more tame, but so repetitive it was rather boring and I was fast forwarding …a lot .

Now many said the book was so popular since you can read it on kindle … but here’s what happened to me:

Hubby got my kindle ( MY kindle …) one evening when I was away – he wanted to read something else but was shocked about the kind of crap he found me reading (he’s Irish protestant) … I think ( I hope) it must have been one of the scenes involving a lot of spanking and dirty talk… and not one of the worse ones. Man, did I have some explaining to do after that!!!! I retorted very quickly that if you take the few brutal rape scenes out of Stig Larsson’s books totally out of context they are much worse, yet he himself read it and recommended the book to me. Chew on that, Mr. Shue!

So … red with shame and boiling inside, I bought hubby HIS OWN bloody kindle for his birthday and promptly deleted the goddamn books from my amazon account hoping to completely forget about it.

Now I saw the book on the front shelves in 3 different airports ( translated into 3 other languages), Andrew Marc has done an ad campaign based on it, the movies ensue ... I am a bit puzzled.

Shue I find it a bit puzzling that it is so mainstream, because the "erotica" is not typical romance-book stuff. I guess that's why it is so popular, because it is so "forbidden". I have read books on this type of sex and was fascinated...10 years ago.

OMG apparently it has now become the best selling fiction title of all time and sold 5.3 million copies - just goes to show how little taste most of the population has :H

                            Shades of Grey

Have to weigh in. I am in agreement with the poor writing, etc. I don't think it was first advertised as erotica, but it did find an audience. I heard that libraries have many, many holds on this book for the over 50's.

I think that whatever helps a sex life is worth reading, but I'm a literary snob and didn't buy the literary aspect, I also live alone:upset:

It won't ever win any literary awards, so take it for what it is. The author was interviewed on U.S. tv and was visibly embarassed, but she is also very wealthy now. I remember staying in an out of the way hotel where they only had harlequin romances. You know the books, takes 30 minutes to read and about 15 minutes to write. I came home and "wrote" one on Word with the same prefrabricated plot, et., etc. It was a fun exercise, but I would never pen my name to it.

It is what it is my friends so take it or leave it.

I wish I had written it, lol. Every time a new idea gets thought up and written about, I wish it had been mine. Hahaha, although I say it isn't great writing, I have to give her kudos for writing about something that has sparked the public's interest.
